Para poner fin a seis meses de inactividad e iniciar su temporada 2022, el exretador mundial superwélter Carlos “Chema” Ocampo 32(20KO)-1(1) se enfrentó anoche al panameño Omir Rodríguez 11(5KO)-4(3)-1, al que derrotó en el primer asalto de un duelo breve pero muy intenso.
Ambos se mostraron muy activos desde el comienzo, cruzando golpes curvos de manera peligrosa antes de que Ocampo dañase a su rival con un gancho zurdo. Rodríguez retrocedió hasta las cuerdas presionado por “Chema”, recurriendo tanto al clinch como a lanzar desesperados golpes disuasorios. Finalmente, tras intercambios tan agresivos como desordenados, un gancho al hígado puso en el tapiz al visitante, que se alzó afectado. Entonces el mexicano se lanzó a por el knockout y, aunque incluso se mostró algo cansado por tantos puños arrojados, conectó un directo enlazado con un cruzado zurdo que hicieron a Rodríguez rebotar en las cuerdas y caer a la lona boca abajo, no pudiendo seguir en el enfrentamiento.
Como entretenimiento el duelo pudo servir bien a muchos, pero careció de utilidad para que Ocampo expanda su experiencia y maximice sus posibilidades en el top 15. Hay que recordar que Ocampo es 9º WBO superwélter, que en algún momento u otro le tocará afrontar un combate exigente y que en 2018 perdió en el primer asalto contra Errol Spence. De modo que si no quiere volver a padecer un revés muy duro moralmente cuando le toque dar un paso al frente y encarar una pelea decisiva, Ocampo necesita aumentar el nivel de su oposición y prepararse con duelos más exigentes.

To end six months of inactivity and start his 2022 season, former super welterweight world challenger Carlos “Chema” Ocampo 32(20KO)-1(1) faced Panamanian Omir Rodríguez 11(5KO)-4(3)-1, whom he defeated in the first round of a brief but very intense duel.
Both were very active from the start, exchanging hooks dangerously before Ocampo damaged his opponent with a left hook. Rodríguez moved back to the ropes pressured by “Chema”, resorting to clinches and to desperate dissuasive blows. Finally, after aggressive and messy exchanges, a hook to the liver put the visitor on the canvas, standing up with difficulties. Then the Mexican went for the knockout and, although he seemed somewhat tired from so many thrown punches, he connected a straight right and a left hook that made Rodríguez bounce off in the ropes and fall to the mat face down, unable to continue in the match.
As entertainment, the duel could serve well, but it lacked utility for Ocampo to expand his experience and maximize his chances in the top 15. It must be remembered that Ocampo is 9th WBO super welterweight, that at some point or another he will have to face a crucial fight and that in 2018 he lost in the first round against Errol Spence. So, if he doesn’t want to suffer a very hard setback again when he has to face an important fight, Ocampo needs to increase the level of his opposition and prepare with more demanding duels.
