En este margen de tiempo muy poco se ha hablado sobre cuáles podrían ser sus siguientes pasos, señalando incluso algunos que estaba apuntando al retiro definitivo del boxeo profesional activo.
No obstante, esto no será así, sino que múltiples medios han informado de que Kovalev tiene prácticamente acordado un enfrentamiento para el día 12 de marzo en Estados Unidos contra el chino Fanlong Meng. Quizás, por el nombre, muchos no recuerden quién es este boxeador, pero Meng, además de ser olímpico, es en teoría el retador obligatorio IBF del peso semipesado del monarca Artur Beterbiev.
