El subcampeón WBA pesado Bryan quedó a la espera de pelea con Dubois con victoria cuestionable y pobre actuación ante Guidry

Si el proceso de reducción de campeones WBA sigue el camino previsto, el titular “regular” del peso pesado, el estadounidense Trevor Bryan 22(15KO)-0, se enfrentará próximamente al extitular interino Daniel Dubois, hablándose incluso de que ambos podrían verse las caras hacia el mes de abril. Por lo tanto, estando tan cerca Bryan y su promotor Don King de una pugna de gran relieve, los jueces no podían permitir que al púgil se le escapase el triunfo pese a su pobre actuación contra su compatriota Jonathan Guidry 17(10KO)-1-2, quien tuvo un final insuficiente pero que por lo demás pareció merecer la victoria. Pese a ello, un juez dio un claramente corrupto 118-109 a favor de Bryan, otro un menos absurdo 116-111 y el restante un 115-112 para Guidry que era la cartulina justa y acertada.
Aunque tenía desventaja en altura, Guidry se manejó para, moviéndose y contragolpeando con crochés y directos agachado, hacerse correoso para Bryan en el comienzo, no encontrando el invicto la forma de impactar sus manos sin exponerse a la réplica de su rival, que tuvo también alguna buena esquiva. Aunque sus resultados estaban siendo muy limitados, Bryan se centró en insistir en su búsqueda de un golpe de poder decisivo que rompiese el duelo, errando la mayoría de sus directos y ganchos zurdos y quedando expuesto para los astutos hooks entrando y saliendo de Guidry.
Guidry, que no es un boxeador de la parte alta de la división, difícilmente iba a poder mantener de forma indefinida ni ese nivel de boxeo ni la exigencia física que conllevaba y, por ejemplo, en el cuarto asalto terminó quedando más estático y Bryan pudo usar su ventaja en potencia y peso para conectar duros ganchos y directos que dañaron algo a su contrincante. Aun así, en adelante Guidry se movió y jabeó de nuevo, contragolpeó variando alturas y conectó precisos hooks en los intercambios y en el cuerpo a cuerpo para, de momento, mantener su superioridad y dejar asaltos entretenidos e interesantes.
Estando así las cosas, Bryan necesitaba un ajuste importante o un aumento de intensidad, pero siguió persiguiendo torpe y lentamente a su adversario, cayendo en los jabs y en los directos diestros de Guidry y en sus hooks arriba y abajo hasta el punto de parecer que, pasada la mitad, tenía que estar en una posición comprometida en las cartulinas en el caso de que estas fuesen justas.
Por lo tanto, a Bryan no le quedaba otra que reaccionar, y lo hizo. Si bien continuó dejando enormes huecos para los puños de su contrincante, en el noveno asalto Bryan impactó duros directos, empezando Guidry a flojear de forma evidente, a ser cada vez menos eficaz y a recibir más golpes. Así se llegó a dos últimos asaltos en los que Bryan le dio la vuelta a la situación hasta el punto de que consiguió dañar con golpes de poder y derribar a Guidry justo antes del tañido final. El púgil logró ponerse de pie a duras penas y en muy mal estado, pero el árbitro lo dio por bueno y permitió a Guidry escuchar el veredicto de los jueces.
Algunos consideran que como en ese momento el tercer hombre podría haber decretado el KOT no es necesario poner en duda la cuestionable victoria de Bryan a los puntos. Sin embargo, Guidry se alzó en un momento en el que no iba a tener que recibir más puños y el árbitro obró de manera correcta al no decretar el KOT, no siendo en cualquier caso la discusión sobre la posible detención excusa para dar por buena la extrañísima cartulina de 118-110.
Sea como sea, contra un boxeador de nivel teóricamente muy limitado y sin experiencia de calidad, Bryan tuvo una pelea muy trabajada y fue alcanzado por incontables puños, por lo que de materializarse el combate ante el explosivo y contundente Daniel Dubois parece inevitable que “DDD” logre un triunfo por knockout.

If the process of reducing WBA champions goes as planned, the «regular» heavyweight titleholder, the American Trevor Bryan 22(15KO)-0, could face former interim titleholder Daniel Dubois as soon as the month of April. Therefore, with Bryan and his promoter Don King so close to a high-profile fight, the judges didn’t want to allow the fighter to miss out that oportuntity despite his poor performance against his compatriot Jonathan Guidry 17(10KO)-1- 2, who had a bad finish but otherwise seemed to deserve victory. Despite this, a judge gave a clearly corrupt 118-109 in favor of Bryan, another one a less absurd 116-111 and the remaining a fair and accurate card of 115-112 for Guidry.
Although he had height disadvantage, Guidry managed to have success early on by moving and counter-punching with hooks and straight punches. As for the undefeated Bryan, he did not found a way to let his hands go without exposing himself to the counters from his opponent, who also had some good dodging. Despite his results were very limited, Bryan insisted on his search for a decisive power punch, missing most of his straight rights and left hooks and leaving himself open to Guidry’s cunning hooks coming in and out.
Guidry, who is not a boxer from the top of the division, was hardly going to be able to maintain that level of boxing or its physical demands indefinitely and, for example, in the fourth round he ended up being more static and Bryan was able to use his power and weight advantage to land hard straight punches and hooks that damaged a bit his opponent. Even so, from then on Guidry moved and jabbed again, counterattacked varying angles and landed precise hooks in exchanges and in close combat to, for the moment, maintain his superiority and leave entertaining and interesting rounds.
With that situation, Bryan needed a major adjustment or to increase his intensity, but he continued to chase his rival clumsily and slowly, so Guidry’s jabs, straight right hands and his hooks up and down kept connecting to the point of looking like, after the half point, the titlist had to be in a compromised position on the scorecards in case they were fair.
Therefore, Bryan had no choice but to react, and he did. Although he continued to leave huge gaps for his opponent’s fists, in the ninth round Bryan hit hard with straight punches and Guidry began to clearly weaken, to be less and less effective and to receive more shots. That led to the last two rounds, in which Bryan turned the tables so much that he managed to damage his rival with power shots and droped Guidry just before the final bell. The fighter struggled to stand on his feet, but the referee allowed Guidry to hear the verdict.
Some say that the third man in the ring could have ruled then the TKO and, therefore, there is no need to question Bryan’s victory on points. However, Guidry got up at a time when he was not going to have to receive any more punches and the referee acted correctly by not ruling the TKO. On the other hand, a possible discussion about the stoppage is not an excuse to take as valid the very strange scorecard of 118-110.
Be that as it may, against a boxer with a theoretically very limited level and without quality experience, Bryan had a very hard fight and was hit by countless punches, so if the fight against the explosive and strong Daniel Dubois materializes, it seems inevitable that “DDD ” will achieve a victory by knockout.
