Como se preveía, el excampeón mundial Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez, incluso estando en la recta final de su carrera, fue demasiado para el voluntarioso Macaulay McGowan, que le puso esfuerzo y se levantó de dos caídas pero que perdió una amplísima decisión unánime.

Viernes 28 de enero
Los jóvenes mexicanos Adrián “El Gato” Curiel 19(3KO)-4 y Hugo “Chacal” Hernández 18(7KO)-7(1)-1 cumplieron y ofrecieron un duelo disputado e igualado, que sólo se resolvió a favor de Curiel de forma dividida (97-93, 96-94 y 94-96). En cualquier caso, y si bien Hernández mostró su nivel competitivo y sus posibilidades de alcanzar una importante victoria internacional si le llega la oportunidad adecuada, será Curiel quien ahora se posicionará en el largo ranking WBC del peso mosca (en el que Hernández era 24º) y tratará de extender su cadena de triunfos buscando alcanzar el top 15.
En cuanto al bronce olímpico y dos veces oro mundial cubano Joahnys Argilagos 8(4KO)-1(1), éste no sólo ahondó con su actuación las dudas que había generado como púgil profesional hasta ahora, sino que fue derrotado por abandono en el sexto asalto ante el agresivo venezolano Michell Bánquez 20(14KO)-1, que no peleaba desde hace dos años y medio. Por ello, y aunque se debe tener en cuenta, como siempre, que una primera derrota no es el final, se puso de manifiesto que Argilagos necesita cambios significativos en la forma de encarar su carrera si quiere llegar hasta lo más alto, mientras que Bánquez se anotó la mayor victoria de su carrera y seguramente será llamado pronto para poner a prueba a un boxeador cercano al top 15 gallo o con aspiraciones.
Sábado 29 de enero
El campeonato mundial WBC del peso crucero, y duelo de revancha, entre Ilunga Makabu y Thabiso Mchunu terminó con el monarca reteniendo su cinturón por decisión dividida, resultado que ha sido cuestionado pero que el retador se buscó volviendo a cometer agravados los errores que tuvo en su primer duelo contra Makabu.

También hubo controversia en el semifondo, puesto que el titular “regular” WBA del peso pesado Trevor Bryan, pese a anotarse un knockdown en el asalto final, fue durante largos tramos de la contienda inferior al modesto Jonathan Guidry, aunque los jueces le dieron al primero de ambos la decisión dividida favorable.

Respecto al resto del respaldo destacado del evento Makabu-Mchunu II, el joven peso pesado Dacarree Scott pasó por primera vez del segundo asalto y logró un triunfo unánime sobre Ahmed Hefny y el peso crucero Johnnie Langston derrotó en el quinto asalto a Nick Kisner.

Pasando al combate estelar de la velada de Top Rank, el oro olímpico Robson Conceição venció una eliminatoria semifinal WBC del peso superpluma derrotando por clara decisión unánime al hasta ahora invicto Xavier Martínez.

Sumándose otra polémica más a la jornada, el ruso Fedor Papazov derrotó por decisión mayoritaria al kirguiso Akzhol Sulaimanbek Uulu en un choque, el principal de una velada de RCC Boxing, en el que perfectamente se pudo justificar el triunfo de Uulu.

En la revancha entre Thomas Faure 21(2KO)-4(1)-1 y Kevin Thomas Cojean 27(10KO)-11(3)-2 sí hubo un vencedor, puesto que Faure se hizo con un triunfo unánime (117-111 y doble 116-112) con el que extendió a 8 su cadena de peleas sin sufrir una derrota y capturó el vacante cinturón de la Unión Europea del peso semipesado. En base a él pondrá sus miras en pugnas en la escena continental pero, teniendo en cuenta su escasa experiencia de calidad y sus escasos triunfos relevantes, no sería sorprendente si su reinado se ve cortado en una defensa obligatoria exigente.
Terminando con el recorrido por el fin de semana, también se produjeron estos otros resultados:
-El título de campeón de Argentina del peso semipesado fue conquistado por Franco Ezequiel Acosta 10(7KO)-0 con una victoria unánime sobre el veterano Walter Gabriel Sequeira 24(16KO)-9(5)-1, debiendo centrarse ahora el titular en realizar defensas que le ayuden a expandir su todavía corto bagaje profesional (sólo ha disputado por ahora 34 rounds).
-El noqueador Omar “Pollo” Aguilar 23(22KO)-0 una vez más se encontró frente a un boxeador que no le aportó nada, acabando en el segundo asalto con el sustituto Ricardo Bañuelos 17(7KO)-6(4)-1. Así, es evidente que, tras una gran cantidad de rápidas y abrumadoras victorias contra rivales que no ofrecieron oposición, Aguilar necesita un salto importante adelante en cuanto a aumento de dificultad de sus oponentes.
-El exaspirante mundial superpluma Francisco Fonseca 29(23KO)-3(2)-2 sólo necesitó dos asaltos para demostrar que está a otro nivel respecto a Franco Gutiérrez 11(6KO)-7(1)-2, derrotarle por KOT y conseguir un título que debería afianzarle en el top 15 WBA. Por otro lado, el exmonarca mundial mosca Cristofer Rosales 32(21KO)-5(1) también salió con el brazo en alto de su rodaje ante Jerson Ortiz 17(8KO)-5, si bien en su caso fue por descalificación en el quinto asalto.

As expected, former world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez, even in the final stage of his career, was too much for the willful Macaulay McGowan, who put in effort and got up from two knockdowns but lost a wide unanimous decision. Read more following this link.

The young Mexicans Adrián “El Gato” Curiel 19(3KO)-4 and Hugo “Chacal” Hernández 18(7KO)-7(1)-1 offered a contested duel, which was only resolved in favor of Curiel by split decision (97-93, 96-94 and 94-96). In any case, and although Hernández showed his competitive level and his chances of achieving an important international victory if the right opportunity comes, it will be Curiel who will now position himself in the long WBC flyweight ranking (in which Hernández was 24th) and will try to extend his streak of wins seeking to reach the top 15.
As for the Cuban Olympic bronze medalist and two-time world gold medalist Joahnys Argilagos 8(4KO)-1(1), he not only deepened the doubts that he had generated as a professional boxer, but he was also defeated by retirement in the sixth round against the aggressive Venezuelan Michell Bánquez 20(14KO)-1, who had not fought for two and a half years. For this reason, and although it must be taken into account, as always, that a first defeat is not the end, it became clear that Argilagos needs significant changes in the way he approaches his career if he wants to reach the top, while Bánquez obtained the biggest victory of his career and will surely be called up soon to test a boxer close to the bantamweight top 15 or with aspirations.

The WBC cruiserweight world championship, and rematch fight, between Ilunga Makabu and Thabiso Mchunu ended with the belt holder retaining his title by split decision, result that has been questioned. However the challenger didn’t deserve better, as he made again the same mistakes he had in his first duel against Makabu. Read more following this link.
There was also controversy in the co-feature, since the «regular» WBA heavyweight titleholder Trevor Bryan, despite scoring a knockdown in the final round, was inferior to Jonathan Guidry for long stretches of the contest. Even so, the judges gave Bryan a favorable split decision. Read more following this link.
Regarding the rest of the undercard of the Makabu-Mchunu II event, the young heavyweight Dacarree Scott achieved a unanimous victory over Ahmed Hefny and cruiserweight Johnnie Langston defeated Nick Kisner in the fifth round. Read more following this link.
As for Top Rank’s card main event, Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceição won a WBC super featherweight semifinal eliminator beating the undefeated Xavier Martínez by clear unanimous decision. Read more following this link.
Adding another controversy to the day, the Russian Fedor Papazov defeated the Kyrgyz Akzhol Sulaimanbek Uulu by majority decision in a match, the main one of an evening of RCC Boxing, in which the victory of Uulu was perfectly justifiable. Read more following this link.
In the rematch between Thomas Faure 21(2KO)-4(1)-1 and Kevin Thomas Cojean 27(10KO)-11(3)-2 the first of both won by unanimous decision (117-111 and double 116-112), triumph with which he extended his streak to eight fights without suffering a defeat and captured the vacant European Union light heavyweight belt. With it, he will set his sights on fights on the continental scene but, taking into account his lack of quality experience and his few relevant wins, it would not be surprising if his reign is cut short by a demanding mandatory defense.
As for the rest of the remaining results of the weekend:
-The Argentine light heavyweight champion title was won by Franco Ezequiel Acosta 10(7KO)-0 with a unanimous victory over veteran Walter Gabriel Sequeira 24(16KO)-9(5)-1. The titleholder must now focus on making defenses that could help him expand his still short professional experience (he has only fought 34 rounds so far).
-The puncher Omar “Pollo” Aguilar 23(22KO)-0 once again found himself facing a boxer who did not contribute positively to his career, finishing in the second round with the late substitute Ricardo Bañuelos 17(7KO)-6(4)-1. So it’s clear that, after a lot of quick and overwhelming wins against easy opponents, Aguilar needs a major step forward in terms of increasing difficulty of his opponents.
-The former super featherweight world champion Francisco Fonseca 29(23KO)-3(2)-2 only needed two rounds to show that he is at another level compared to Franco Gutiérrez 11(6KO)-7(1)-2, to whom he defeated by TKO to get a title that should keep him in the top 15 WBA. On the other hand, the former flyweight world champion Cristofer Rosales 32(21KO)-5(1) also came out of the ring with his arm raised in his fight against Jerson Ortiz 17 (8KO) -5, although in his case it was due to a disqualification in the fifth round.
