Para completar una interesante velada de boxeo encabezada por la eliminatoria del peso wélter Keith Thurman vs. Mario Barrios desde el Michelob Ultra Arena de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, Premier Boxing Champions ha acompañado dicho enfrentamiento con otros tres que darán forma a la cartelera principal emitida por el PPV de FOX. En este respaldo destaca la participación de dos excampeones mundiales que quieren reflotar, pareciendo además que hay una buena probabilidad de que los tres combates sean bastante entretenidos.
El retorno del “Terremoto”
Como enfrentamiento de semifondo se producirá el regreso al cuadrilátero del monarca mundial mexicano Leo “El Terremoto” Santa Cruz 37(19KO)-2(1)-1 un año y dos meses después de su dura derrota por KO contra Gervonta Davis. En esta vuelta a la actividad, Santa Cruz combatirá dentro del peso superpluma, si bien el púgil ha afirmado que su intención es militar en el peso pluma, en el que recordemos que todavía es el campeón mundial WBA pese a no haber defendido el título desde hace tres años (febrero de 2019).
Su oponente el sábado será el estadounidense Keenan “Bedo” Carbajal 23(15KO)-2(1)-1, un boxeador espigado, competente, en racha de victorias y con ambición pero que jamás ha vencido a un boxeador del top 15. De hecho, en su mayor duelo hasta la fecha, ante el muy venido a menos exretador mundial Carlos Carlson, sólo pudo obtener una decisión dividida.
Dado que Carbajal tiene mucha menos fluidez en sus acciones que Santa Cruz y que este último ofreció un buen número de rounds muy disputados contra el duro pegador Davis, es de esperar que el uso de las variadas combinaciones de “Terremoto” le valga para anotarse la victoria ante un oponente que entrecorta su boxeo. Con todo, siendo escasa la pegada del campeón y estando Carbajal ante la mayor pelea de su carrera, posiblemente habrán asaltos contendidos y con intercambios y Santa Cruz podría llegar a necesitar consumir toda la distancia.
Un paso más hacia la cumbre
Antes del Santa Cruz vs. Carbajal se iba producir un duelo del peso wélter entre Abel Ramos y Josesito López, pero este ha tenido que ser cancelado. Como sustituto se ha programado un encuentro del peso superwélter entre el destacado prospecto mexicano Jesús “Mono” Ramos 17(14KO)-0 y su compatriota Vladimir “24K” Hernández 13(6KO)-4(1).
Con victorias consecutivas contra pronóstico sobre Alfredo Angulo y, sobre todo, el excampeón mundial unificado Julian Williams, Vladimir Hernández ha alcanzado el punto más alto de su carrera, siendo evidente que es un boxeador capaz y combativo con un nivel mejor de lo que muchos pensaron tras sus derrotas ante Israil Madrimov y Souleymane Cissokho.
No obstante, Ramos está demostrando que ya no sólo es un prospecto, sino que pronto podría llegar a ser un boxeador de élite si aprovecha de la forma adecuada su sensacional capacidad de desborde. Por lo tanto, aunque los dos últimos combates de Ramos no han terminado antes del límite, aunque le convendría descender de división y aunque su rival está en su mejor momento, todo parece indicar que en el intenso encuentro con intercambios que se producirá “Mono” debería poder vencer con claridad.
Rozando el mundial supergallo
Por último, la emisión del PPV se iniciará con un muy buen choque del peso supergallo entre el exmonarca mundial Luis “Pantera” Nery 31(24KO)-1(1) y el invicto prospecto Carlos Castro 27(12KO)-0, que está clasificado inmediatamente por debajo del retador obligatorio en tres de los organismos. Por lo tanto, Castro está realmente cerca de su primera pelea titular, aunque para alcanzarla necesitará saltar un último obstáculo, uno nada pequeño. Y es que el pegador Nery llega de su primera derrota, un knockout contra Brandon Figueroa, y ansía lograr un triunfo para no alejarse de la cumbre y poner sus miras en una nueva corona.
Además de ser otro duelo con mucho sentido, estilísticamente es muy interesante y debería ofrecer importantes respuestas sobre ambos. Por un lado, Castro debe mostrar si es capaz de sostener una constancia muy superior en el boxeo dinámico, técnico y defensivo de la que ha demostrado en varios de sus combates, defecto que casi le cuesta muy caro contra Escandón, mientras que Nery tiene que evidenciar que no se ha desmoralizado ni por su revés contra Figueroa ni por su floja actuación contra Aarón Alameda y que puede sacar lo mejor de su agresividad y acometividad para tratar de sobrepasar a un púgil hábil y sin derrotas. En definitiva, este es un muy buen combate en el que se pondrá a prueba la fuerza mental de Nery y la resistencia al castigo y la gestión del mismo por parte de Castro.
Esta cartelera será emitida en Estados Unidos por un PPV de FOX que se iniciará a las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en hora de España, país en el que, como en muchos otros, se podrá comprar un PPV de Fite.

As Carbajal has much less fluidity in his actions than Santa Cruz and as the latter offered a good number of closely contested rounds against the hard-hitting Davis, it is to be expected that the varied combinations of “Terremoto” will serve him to achieve victory. All in all, the former champion is not a big puncher and Carbajal is in the biggest fight of his career, so there will possibly be contested rounds and hard exchanges and Santa Cruz could eventually need to consume all the rounds.
One more step to the top
Before the Santa Cruz vs. Carbajal, in the card was scheduled a welterweight duel between Abel Ramos and Josesito López, but this had to be canceled. As a substitute has appeared a super welterweight fight between the outstanding American prospect Jesús “Mono” Ramos 17(14KO)-0 and the tough Mexican Vladimir “24K” Hernández 13(6KO)-4(1).
With consecutive upset victories over Alfredo Angulo and, above all, the former unified world champion Julian Williams, Hernández has reached the highest point of his career, and has become evident that he is a capable and combative boxer with a better level than many thought after his losses to Israil Madrimov and Souleymane Cissokho.
However, Ramos is proving that he is no longer just a prospect, but could soon become an elite boxer if he takes advantage of his sensational offensive ability. Therefore, although his last two fights have not ended by knockout, although it would be convenient for him to go down a division and although his rival is at his best, everything seems to indicate that in the intense bout with exchanges that will take place «Mono» should be able to win clearly.
At the door of a world super bantamweight championship
The PPV broadcast will begin with a very good super bantamweight battle between former world champion Luis «Pantera» Nery 31(24KO)-1(1) and undefeated prospect Carlos Castro 27(12KO)-0, who is ranked just below the mandatory challenger in three of the organizations. Thus, Castro is indeed very close to his first title fight, although to reach it he will need to jump one last hurdle, and one that is not small. He will compete against the dangerous puncher Nery, who comes from his first defeat (a knockout against Brandon Figueroa) and wants to achieve a victory to avoid moving away from the top and position himself near a new championship fight.
This very meaningful duel it’s also stylistically a very interesting bout that should offer important answers about both boxers. On the one hand, Castro must show if he is capable of sustaining a much higher consistency in dynamic, technical and defensive boxing than he has shown in several of his fights, a defect that almost cost him dearly against Escandón, while Nery has to show that he has not been demoralized by his setback against Figueroa or by his weak performance against Aarón Alameda and that he can make the best of his aggressiveness to try to overcome a skillful and undefeated fighter. In short, this is a very good fight in which Nery’s mental strength and Castro’s resistance to punishment will be tested.
