Luis Nery venció por la mínima a Carlos Castro en eliminatoria semifinal del peso supergallo

Dado que la pelea fue a diez asaltos pero estuvo etiquetada oficialmente como una eliminatoria supergallo WBC y WBO, el excampeón mundial mexicano Luis “Pantera” Nery 32(24KO)-1(1) está ahora situado inmediatamente por debajo del aspirante obligatorio WBC-WBO Daniel Román en el acceso al mundial. Y es que Nery derrotó anoche al imbatido estadounidense Carlos Castro 27(12KO)-1 en esta antesala titular, si bien el veredicto dividido resultó cuestionable. Un juez dio un acertado 95-94 para Castro, otro un 95-94 para Nery y el restante un excesivo 96-93 también para Nery.
Una izquierda recta del zurdo Nery puso en el tapiz a Castro en el primer asalto, siendo castigado el púgil por algunas series de hooks en la reanudación, si bien en ataques medidos y limitadamente agresivos. Lo cierto es que Nery no se mostró en la pelea demasiado dispuesto a volcarse al ataque, sino que de hecho permitió que un Castro que buscaba remontar tomase la iniciativa durante la mayor parte del tiempo.
En un principio las combinaciones del “Pantera” en los cruces fueron lo suficientemente nítidas como para darle los asaltos, pero posteriormente Nery redujo mucho su frecuencia de ataque y se desplazó confiando de más en una defensa no tan buena como él pensaba. De ese modo, Castro pudo acortar distancias en las tarjetas sacando aislados directos que alcanzaron a Nery muchas veces con las manos bajas mientras intentaba esquivar sin éxito, llegando a tocar la lona con su guante (sin cuenta del árbitro) al recibir una ofensiva.
Los comentaristas de FOX, como tantos otros hoy en día, hicieron un trabajo atroz, sesgándose abiertamente del lado de Nery, pero el hecho es que el púgil estaba combatiendo de forma equivocada al dar tanto terreno para trabajar a Castro. Que «Pantera» no estaba haciendo lo que más le convenía quedaba más de manifiesto aún teniendo en cuenta que cuando se decidía a atacar, como en el octavo round, ponía en apuros a Castro con sus fuertes combinaciones de hooks. Sea como sea, estos destellos de agresividad fueron escasos y su boxeo sin iniciativa casi le cuesta la victoria en las tarjetas ante un Castro que en lugar de tirar de técnica tiró básicamente de voluntad y empeño.

Since the fight was scheduled for ten rounds and was officially tagged as a WBC and WBO super bantamweight eliminator, former Mexican world champion Luis “Pantera” Nery 32(24KO)-1(1) is now just below the WBC-WBO mandatory challenger Daniel Roman in access to the world championship. That is because Nery defeated the unbeaten American Carlos Castro 27(12KO)-1 last night in the aforementioned eliminator, although the split decision verdict was questionable. One judge gave a correct 95-94 for Castro, another a 95-94 for Nery and the other one an excessive 96-93 also for Nery.
A straight left hand from southpaw Nery put Castro on the canvas in the first round. The fighter received some combinations of hooks in the restart, albeit in measured and not very aggressive offensives. The truth is that Nery was not very willing to advance in the fight, but in fact allowed Castro, who was looking to come back, to take the initiative for most of the time.
At first the combinations of the «Pantera» in the exchanges were clear enough to give him the rounds, but later Nery greatly reduced his attack frequency and moved relying more on a defense that was not as good as he thought. In this way, Castro was able to shorten the difference on the cards by throwing selected straight punches that reached Nery many times with his hands low while trying to dodge without success.
The FOX commentators, like so many others nowadays, did an atrocious job, openly biasing in favor of Nery, but the fact is that the boxer was fighting the wrong way by giving his rival so much ground to work, even more so considering that when the «Pantera» decided to attack, as in the eighth round, he put his rival in trouble with his strong combinations of hooks. Be that as it may, these flashes of aggressiveness of Nery were few and his boxing without initiative almost cost him the victory on the scorecards against a Castro who, instead of using his technique, basically used willpower and determination.
