Previa: Okolie expone su cinturón mundial WBO crucero ante Michal Cieslak en combate estelar de velada de DAZN el domingo

La carrera profesional del peso crucero Lawrence Okolie 17(14KO)-0 está resultando una montaña rusa, pero no en cuanto a sus resultados sino respecto a la valoración que se hace de él y de sus actuaciones. Primeramente, Okolie generó muchas expectativas al ser un olímpico de grandes dimensiones para el peso crucero, dejando rápidas victorias ante sus rivales iniciales. Con todo, cuando su trayectoria alcanzó el nivel británico hubo una gigantesca cantidad de críticas y burlas a sus actuaciones, ofreciendo peleas espantosamente aburridas y en las que sólo entraba en clinch constantemente.
No obstante, en un nuevo giro, cuando empezó a combatir ante rivales de nivel internacional Okolie logró evolucionar y dar forma a un contundente boxeo que le ha valido para derrotar antes del límite de forma consecutiva a sus mayores rivales hasta la fecha y coronarse campeón de Europa y mundial. Es justo decir que ni Ngabu, ni Prasović ni Jezewski eran boxeadores de la élite de la división, sino que ni siquiera estaban entre los 15 mejores en términos absolutos, mientras que Glowacki es un veterano muy castigado y al borde del retiro. Aun así, Okolie ha dejado atrás de momento las páginas más negativas de su recorrido profesional, está lleno de ambición y recibe no pocos halagos.
Según afirma el propio Okolie, su plan es afrontar unificaciones en el peso crucero en este año, posteriormente buscar una pelea por el “cinturón” de la “categoría” creada por el WBC, el peso puente, y finalmente ascender al peso pesado, en el que con su 1,96 m de altura y su 2,10 m de alcance no sería precisamente un púgil pequeño. Sin embargo, antes de que pueda intentar culminar todos esos planes, Okolie tendrá que superar la que teóricamente es una defensa obligatoria WBO ante el polaco Michal Cieslak 21(15KO)-1, a quien se medirá este domingo en el combate estelar de una velada de Matchroom Boxing y DAZN desde el O2 Arena de Londres, Reino Unido.
Por rendimiento, experiencia y ciertos condicionantes favorables, Cieslak es posiblemente sobre el papel el reto más exigente que ha afrontado por el momento Okolie, puesto que es un exretador mundial con ambición, pegada y un tamaño similar al del monarca y que cuenta con victorias antes del límite ante rivales como Youri Kalenga, Olanrewaju Durodola o Yuri Kashinsky. Asimismo, su única derrota llegó de forma controvertida y como visitante en el Congo contra Ilunga Makabu, ante quien los observadores imparciales le vieron ganar a pesar de las cartulinas localistas, el mal arbitraje y las dificultades que se le crearon a Cieslak antes del combate.
Por ello, y sumándose que Cieslak es un boxeador que dio positivo en control antidopaje y que batió en tres rounds a un Jezewski al que Okolie derrotó en dos asaltos, éste es un reto evidente para el monarca. Aun así, el británico parte como favorito por diversos motivos.
Ante todo, Okolie parece tener una ventaja en velocidad, reflejos y alcance que se combinan muy bien para poder generar problemas decisivos desde la distancia larga si sabe anticiparse con sus directos y realizar fluidas transiciones a posición defensiva tras sus ataques. Con ello, evitando los intercambios en la media-corta y no cayendo en los contragolpes del visitante, Okolie debería poder buscar desgastar a su rival gradualmente hasta alcanzar un punto de ruptura o contentarse con no arriesgar y decantar la mayoría de los episodios. Por contra, si comete el error de reducir los espacios durante demasiado tiempo, ajusta mal la distancia o se encima y no explota adecuadamente su alcance deberá andarse con mucho ojo con los ganchos de Cieslak, que son muy poderosos y que tienen la capacidad de dañar a sus rivales en el momento más inesperado.

The professional career of cruiserweight Lawrence Okolie 17(14KO)-0 is turning out to be a bit of a roller coaster, not in his results but in terms of his performance and the praising he recives. First of all, Okolie generated a lot of expectation for being an Olympic big for cruiserweight, achieving quick victories against his opponents. However, when his career reached the British level there was a great amount of criticism to his performances, as he generated unbearably boring fights in which he just clinched constantly.
However, in a new twist, when he began to fight against rivals of international level, Okolie managed to evolve and to give form to a forceful boxing that has allowed him to consecutively defeat by stoppage his greatest opponents to date and be crowned Europe and world champion. It’s fair to say that Ngabu, Prasovic or Jezewski aren’t part of the division’s elite, while Glowacki is a punished veteran on the verge of retirement. Even so, for now Okolie has left behind him the most negative pages of his professional career, is full of ambition and receives many compliments.
According to Okolie, his plan is to fight in cruiserweight unifications this year, to later seek a fight for the «belt» in the «division» created by the WBC, the infamous bridgeweight, and finally ascend to heavyweight, where he will not be a small fighter with his height of 6’ 5” and his reach of 82½″. However, before he can try to materialize all those plans, Okolie will have to overcome what is theoretically a mandatory WBO defense against Polish Michal Cieslak 21(15KO)-1, whom he will face this Sunday in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing and DAZN evening from the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom.
Due to his performance level, experience and some favorable factors, Cieslak is possibly on paper the most demanding challenge that Okolie has had to the date, since he is a former world challenger with ambition, power and a size similar to that of the champion and has stoppage victories against boxers such as Youri Kalenga, Olanrewaju Durodola or Yuri Kashinsky. Also, his only loss came in a controversial way and as a visitor in Congo against Ilunga Makabu, boxer who impartial observers saw lose the bout despite the cards, the bad refereeing and the difficulties that Cieslak had before the match.
For this reason, and adding that Cieslak is a boxer who tested positive in anti-doping control and who beat in three rounds Jezewski (whom Okolie defeated in two rounds), he is an obvious challenge for the titlist. Even so, the British Okolie is favorite for various reasons.
First and foremost, Okolie has advantages in speed, reflexes, and reach that combine nicely to create decisive problems from long range if he knows how to anticipate with straight punches and seamlessly transitions to defensive stance after his attacks. With this, and avoiding exchanges in close-mid range and being cautious with the counterattacks of the visitor, Okolie should be able to try to gradually wear down his rival until reaching a breaking point or, at least, win most of the rounds without risking. On the other hand, if Okolie makes the mistake of reducing distance for too long, adjust range incorrectly or do not exploit his reach properly, he should be very wary with Cieslak’s hooks, since they are very powerful and have the ability to damage his opponents at the most unexpected moment.
