Jordan Gill nuevo campeón de Europa del peso pluma en espectacular remontada, Fowler retornó a la senda del triunfo

Muchos consideran que el británico Jordan “The Thrill” Gill 27(8KO)-1(1)-1 no llegará a ser campeón mundial aunque, de ser esto así, el boxeador al menos sí podrá decir que fue titular de Europa. Y es que este domingo Gill ha destronado a Karim Guerfi 30(9KO)-6(4) como monarca europeo del peso pluma con un brutal knockout en el noveno episodio tras verse en críticas dificultades.
La ambición de Gill para coronarse le llevó a reducir demasiado la distancia al comienzo, yendo más allá de sus jabs y sus directos en la distancia larga y media-larga para sacar combinaciones en corta que permitieron a Guerfi medir precisos contragolpes. No obstante, utilizando su velocidad de manos, su frecuencia de ataque y algunos fluidas acciones defensivas, Gill estaba decantando los asaltos pese a los eventuales ganchos a la contra recibidos.
La veteranía y la tenacidad de Guerfi le ayudaban a no verse totalmente sobrepasado, pero Gill estaba imponiéndose con cada vez mayor claridad e incluso en el quinto asalto el retador dañó a su oponente con un perfecto derechazo al mentón. Aun así, Guerfi estaba lejos de rendirse y en el sexto round tomó la iniciativa e impactó buenos ganchos a la cabeza, éxitos que precedieron un knockdown favorable en el séptimo asalto con un cruzado zurdo. Por si esto fuese poco, además en un clinch Guerfi agarró la cabeza de su rival bajo el brazo y cayó hacia atrás, llevándose Gill un terrible golpe contra la lona.
En momentos del octavo asalto Gill pareció muy cerca del KOT, manteniéndose encerrado en una esquina mientras recibía peligrosos ataques, si bien también conectó alguna dura contra y resistió. De todos modos, en el noveno round se mantuvo estático en la misma esquina y tenía una terrible inflamación sobre el ojo derecho por lo que su derrota parecía inevitable. Sin embargo, aunque a penas se tenía ya en pie, Gill sacó de la nada una brutal mano diestra a la contra que noqueó espectacularmente a Guerfi.
Aunque las dificultades padecidas no son un buen augurio para el futuro, además de obtener el cinturón europeo Gill logrará un muy buen posicionamiento en los rankings en próximas actualizaciones, por lo que no es para nada descartable que al final de esta temporada alcance el combate más importante de su carrera.
Fowler regresó a la senda del triunfo
El varapalo a sus aspiraciones que Anthony Fowler 16(12KO)-2(1) padeció en su crucial derrota contra Liam Smith necesitará tiempo y bastantes buenos resultados para ser superado. De momento, este domingo Fowler dio el primer paso para distanciarse de ese tropiezo venciendo al polaco Lukasz Maciec 27(5KO)-4-1 por decisión unánime y puntuaciones de 99-93, 99-92 y 99-91.
Con esporádicas arremetidas Maciec intentó sorprender al británico, pero inicialmente Fowler frenó a su adversario con su directo de mano adelantada, le atacó en corta con ganchos al cuerpo y contragolpeó con directos y uppercuts. De todos modos, esto no neutralizó al polaco, que continuó embistiendo oscilantemente y llegando con algunos buenos cruzados, destacando uno potente y nítido conectado en el tercer asalto y con el que movió a Fowler un poco.
Pese a esas y otras dificultades puntuales, Fowler ajustó a partir de la mitad y usó sus uno-dos y sus hooks abajo para poner en posiciones defensivas a Maciec y golpearle con eficaces puños que le desgastaron. Así, el local fue yendo a más y no volvió a verse en serias dificultades, puesto que Maciec tiró de experiencia para aguantar e intentar ser competitivo pero perdió gran parte de su eficacia y Fowler lo aprovechó para superarlo con sus golpes de poder.

Many consider that the British Jordan “The Thrill” Gill 27(8KO)-1(1)-1 will not become world champion in his career although, if this is the case, the boxer will at least be able to say that he was European champion. This Sunday Gill has dethroned Karim Guerfi 30(9KO)-6(4) as continental featherweight champion with a brutal knockout in the ninth round after suffering critical difficulties.
Gill’s ambition to win the belt led him to reduce the distance a little too much at the beginning, as after throwing jabs and straight punches in long and mid-long range he attacked with short combinations that allowed Guerfi to counterpunch with precision. However, using his hand speed, his attack frequency, and some fluid defensive movements, Gill was winning the rounds despite the occasional counter hooks he received.
The experience and tenacity of Guerfi kept him from being totally outmatched, but Gill was gaining the round more and more clearly and even in the fifth round the challenger damaged his opponent with a perfect right hand to the chin. Still, Guerfi was far from giving up and in the sixth round he took the initiative and landed some good hooks to the head, successes that preceded a favorable knockdown in the seventh round with a left hook. As if this were not enough, in a clinch Guerfi grabbed the head of his rival under his arm and fell backwards and Gill recieved a terrible blow against the canvas.
At moments of the eighth round Gill seemed very close to lose by TKO, as he was static in a corner while receiving dangerous attacks, although he also landed some hard counters and resisted. However, in the ninth round he was again static in the same corner and had a terrible swelling over his right eye, so his defeat seemed inevitable. However, though he had a lot of problems to stay on his feet, Gill connected a vicious counter right hand out of nowhere that spectacularly knocked out Guerfi.
In addition to obtaining the European belt, it is to be expected that Gill will obtain a very good position in the rankings in future updates, so it is perfectly possible that at the end of this season he could reach the most important fight of his career.
Fowler returned to winning ways
The setback to his aspirations that Anthony Fowler 16(12KO)-2(1) suffered in his crucial loss against Liam Smith will need time and good results to be overcomed. For now, this Sunday Fowler took the first step to distance himself from that defeat by beating the Polish Lukasz Maciec 27(5KO)-4-1 by unanimous decision and scorecards of 99-93, 99-92 and 99-91.
With sporadic attacks Maciec tried to surprise the British, but initially Fowler slowed him down with his jab, hooks to the body and counters with straight punches and uppercuts. Still, this didn’t neutralize the Pole, who continued to connect good hooks, standing out a sharp, powerful one with which he hit in the third round Fowler and shook him a bit.
Despite these and other occasional difficulties, Fowler adjusted from the mid point and used his one-twos and hooks down to put Maciec in defensive positions and pummel him with effective punches that wore him down. Thus, the local did not suffer serious difficulties again, since Maciec used his experience to resist and try to be competitive but lost much of his effectiveness and Fowler took advantage of it to overcome him with his power shots.
