Previa: El excampéon mundial Miguel Berchelt asciende al peso ligero tras su dura derrota ante Óscar Valdez

En una sola pelea el entonces campeón mundial superpluma Miguel “El Alacrán” Berchelt 38(34KO)-2(2) vio como su trayectoria daba un vuelco descomunal. Y es que, a pesar de que estaba en una racha de 17 triunfos, de que había tenido muchas actuaciones estupendas y de que para muchos era el número 1 de la categoría, tras su enfrentamiento contra Óscar Valdez sus grandes perspectivas en la división del peso superpluma se derrumbaron. Además de que padeció una derrota crucial, y a través de un knockout brutal, Berchelt recibió muy duras críticas por su actuación ante Valdez, boxeador que unos meses después dio positivo en control antidopaje.
Teniendo en cuenta que había cosechado victorias espectaculares ante Francisco Vargas, Takashi Miura y Miguel Román y que incluso en su momento el entonces campeón Lomachenko había dejado vacante su cinturón superpluma en lugar de enfrentarse a él cuando era su aspirante obligatorio, Berchelt mereció más respeto del que se le dio tras su tropiezo ante Valdez, más todavía cuando se conoció el positivo de este último. Con todo, no hay nada que se pueda hacer para luchar contra el resultadismo y a Berchelt no le queda otra que intentar reconstruirse con nuevos éxitos.
Para ello Berchelt ha cambiado su lugar de entrenamiento, y a su entrenador, y ahora militará en el peso ligero, en el que pretende buscar un nuevo cinturón mundial. De momento, Berchelt ya ha sido posicionado 5º en esa división por el WBC, por lo que no está lejos de una eventual eliminatoria, y este sábado encarará una pelea de retorno y adaptación al peso ligero contra el namibio Jeremia “Low Key” Nakathila 22(18KO)-2. Este boxeador es conocido sobre todo por haber sido rival del ahora monarca mundial Shakur Stevenson, que le controló durante doce asaltos y que con su defensa a penas le permitió conectar golpes.
Recordando este precedente y que nunca ha logrado una victoria ante un top 15, sería de esperar que Nakathila entrase a la pugna lejísimos en las apuestas pero, contrariamente, Berchelt es favorito con una ventaja no demasiado amplia. Esto se debe a que hay ciertas incógnitas sobre cómo será su rendimiento tras un año inactivo, después de un duro KO y en una división en la que se reducirá un tanto la gran ventaja en dimensiones que solía tener en el peso superpluma. No obstante, aunque estas puedan ser dudas razonables, es de suponer que un Berchelt con un amenazante manejo de las combinaciones y de los golpes de poder y eficaz al ataque a poco que esté en buenas condiciones debería lograr un sólido triunfo.
Es justo decir que Nakathila, pese a faltarle experiencia de calidad y ser un tanto tosco, es un boxeador voluntarioso, en buen estado de forma y que tiene pegada, así que si lo da todo podría generar una pelea entretenida y que nos permita valorar mejor qué se puede esperar de Berchelt en el peso ligero. Sin embargo, otra cosa que no sea un claro triunfo del mexicano sería una sorpresa que generaría muchas dudas sobre sus posibilidades en las 135 lb (61,2 kg).
Esta pugna, la estelar de una velada de Top Rank desde el Resorts World de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, estará acompañada de un duelo del peso pluma posiblemente contendido e interesante entre los mexicanos José Enrique “El Ejecutor” Durantes 21(11KO)-1 y Eduardo “El Gemelo” Báez 20(7KO)-2-2. Estos combates serán emitidos en Estados Unidos por ESPN y ESPN Deportes el sábado desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en España.

In a single fight, the career of the then super featherweight world champion Miguel «El Alacrán» Berchelt 38 (34KO)-2(2) took a huge turn. Despite the fact that he was on a streak of 17 wins, that he had had many great performances and that for many he was number 1 in the division, after his confrontation against Óscar Valdez his great prospects in the super featherweight division collapsed. In addition to the crucial defeat, and through a brutal knockout, Berchelt received very harsh criticism for his performance against Valdez, a boxer who a few months later was positive in an anti-doping test.
Taking into account that he had achieved spectacular victories against Francisco Vargas, Takashi Miura and Miguel Román and that even Lomachenko vacated his super featherweight belt instead of facing him when he was his mandatory challenger, Berchelt deserved more respect than he received after his setback against Valdez, even more so when the latter’s positive was known. However, there is nothing that can be done to fight against the simplistic analysis of some and Berchelt has no choice but to try to rebuild with new successes.
With this objective in mind Berchelt has changed his training place, and his trainer, and now he will fight at lightweight, division in which he intends to obtain a new world belt. For the moment, Berchelt has already been ranked 5th by the WBC, so he is not far from an eventual eliminator, and this Saturday he will face a return bout against Namibian Jeremia «Low Key» Nakathila 22 (18KO)-2. This boxer is known for having been rival of the now world champion Shakur Stevenson, who controlled him for twelve rounds and who, with his defense, barely allowed Nakathila to land punches.
Remembering this precedent and the fact that he has never achieved a victory against a top 15, it would have been logical for Nakathila to enter the fight very far in the betting odds but, on the contrary, Berchelt is favorite with a not too wide advantage. That’s because there are some questions about how he’ll perform after a year off, after a tough KO and in a division that will diminish some of the big size advantage he used to have at super featherweight. However, although these may be reasonable doubts, it is to be expected that a good version of Berchelt, boxer with threatening combinations, hard power shots and effective attacks, should achieve a solid victory.
It is fair to say that Nakathila, despite lacking quality experience and not having a great technique, is a willful boxer, in good shape and with a punch, so if he gives his all he could make for an entertaining fight that will allow us to better assess Berchelt’s place at the lightweight scene. In any case, anything other than a clear win for the Mexican would be a surprise that would raise many questions about his chances at 135 lb (61.2 kg).
This fight, the main one of a Top Rank event from the Resorts World in Las Vegas, United States, will be supported by a possibly contested and interesting featherweight duel between the Mexicans José Enrique “El Ejecutor” Durantes 21(11KO)-1 and Eduardo “El Gemelo” Báez 20(7KO)-2-2. These fights will be broadcast in the United States on ESPN and ESPN Deportes on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT.
