Previa: Kiko Martínez expone este sábado su corona mundial IBF del peso pluma en revancha contra Josh Warrington

En mayo de 2017, el británico Josh “The Leeds Warrior” Warrington 30(7KO)-1(1)-1 tenía la mirada fijada en el ámbito internacional y en la disputa de su primer campeonato mundial, por lo que, como test antes de la crucial pelea que perseguía, se enfrentó al experimentado excampeón mundial español Kiko “La Sensación” Martínez 43(30KO)-10(4)-2. Más que una mera prueba a su desarrollo, el enfrentamiento terminó siendo una dura e igualada pugna para Warrington.
Por una cuestión estilística, el británico se vio en un choque muy complejo, puesto que, en un duelo entre dos boxeadores activos, que buscan la confrontación y que poseen buena cadencia de ataque, quien tiene más pegada, claridad de golpeo y fortaleza es el que tiene las de ganar. De ese modo, el español anotó duros golpes de poder que, si bien no llegaron a generar daños críticos, fueron puños más llamativos e hicieron que la gran mayoría de los observadores (incluidos los de Reino Unido) viesen al visitante como merecedor de la victoria pese al veredicto de los jueces favorable al local.
Después de ese controvertido combate, Warrington terminó coronándose y escaló al número 1 de la división de muchas listas extraoficiales por sus triunfos ante Lee Selby y Carl Frampton, aunque entones llegó el parón, la renuncia a su cinto mundial y su terrible derrota ante el pegador Mauricio Lara, de la que no pudo desquitarse en la revancha. Por contra, a la vez que Warrington iba a menos, Martínez reflotó tras el parón boxístico, primero perdiendo con polémica ante un Zelfa Barrett con gran ventaja en dimensiones y posteriormente noqueando brutalmente al campeón mundial Kid Galahad, ante el que Warrington sólo pudo obtener un cuestionado triunfo dividido en un choque repleto de clinches.
Tras estos recorridos que han seguido líneas contrapuestas, Martínez y Warrington se enfrentan este sábado en una muy interesante revancha de nuevo en el escenario del primer choque entre ambos, el First Direct Arena de Leeds, Reino Unido, donde encabezarán una velada de Matchroom Boxing y DAZN.
Uniendo los elementos, Martínez llega de una actuación muy superior ante un rival en común, Warrington padeció un severo castigo ante Lara que pareció cobrarse un precio en su rendimiento y confianza y “La Sensación” sigue teniendo ventajas estilísticas por su potencia combinada con la tendencia del local a buscar intercambios. Sin embargo, aunque Martínez no está ni mucho menos por encima de sus posibilidades en este combate de revancha y él es ahora el monarca mundial IBF pluma, las apuestas le tienen situado como no favorito a la sorprendente distancia de 4 euros por euro apostado, lo que equivale a decir que se le dan muy pocas posibilidades de éxito.
Si Warrington fuese un boxeador con un encaje inquebrantable, una agilidad asombrosa, buena pegada, una defensa muy eficaz y que no comete fallos tácticos, podría ser considerado claro favorito. Pero es inesperado que se vea su victoria tan probable cuando es un púgil no muy rápido de piernas o manos, que en los últimos cuatro años y medio sólo ha logrado un triunfo antes del límite, que fue vapuleado peligrosamente en su penúltimo choque, que no tiene gran moral en estos momentos y que se mide a un adversario que viene de un gran knockout y que ya le ofreció una pelea muy difícil años atrás.
En el caso de que Warrington se mantuviese móvil de forma constante evitando los intercambios, tirase un gran volumen de golpes y lograse evitar las más peligrosas embestidas de Martínez, alcanzando la última campana, no sería precisamente descartable que los jueces le diesen al ídolo local la decisión, si bien tendría que soportar una muy amenazante presión del visitante. Con todo, si como casi siempre “The Leeds Warrior” se ve incapaz de renunciar a los intercambios en media-corta, y no encuentra una mano crucial inesperada, es muy posible que se vea inmerso en una batalla muy exigente en la que Martínez tendría una evidente posibilidad de victoria gracias a su formidable tenacidad, a su buena selección de puños y, más allá de su pegada, a su excelente gestión de los golpes de poder.
Respaldo principal
En la cartelera destacan otros tres enfrentamientos, siendo uno de ellos el que sostendrán en el peso ligero los británicos Maxi Hughes 24(5KO)-5(2)-2 y Ryan Walsh 27(12KO)-3-2. El enrachado Hughes, que ha sumado triunfos ante Kotochigov, Carroll y Straffon desde una derrota ante Liam Walsh (hermano gemelo de Ryan), pretende explotar su gran momento y sumar una victoria ante un peso pluma que tiene reciente un tropiezo ante James Dickens, boxeador con algunas similitudes con su estilo. De todos modos, aunque Hughes es favorito, Walsh es un boxeador agresivo, resistente y que, si bien es posible que pueda ser neutralizado por un planteamiento táctico, podría darle algún susto a su adversario si éste intercambia de más.
Los otros dos encuentros serán un campeonato mundial IBF del peso supergallo en el que Eddie Hearn pretende que su protegida Ebanie Bridges 7(3KO)-1 se corone monarca a la segunda ante la titular argentina María Cecilia Román 16(0KO)-5-1 y una pugna para el muy prometedor peso superligero británico Dalton “Thunder” Smith 9(7KO)-0 ante el irlandés Ray Moylette 12(5KO)-1.
DAZN ofrecerá este evento el sábado desde las 19:00 en hora española, las 18:00 en hora local y las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

In May 2017, the British Josh «The Leeds Warrior» Warrington 30(7KO)-1(1)-1 had his sights set on the international scene and on his first world championship, so, as a test before a crucial fight, he faced the experienced former world champion Kiko “La Sensación” Martínez 43(30KO)-10(4)-2. More than just a test to his development, the matchup turned out to be a tough and even fight for Warrington.
Stylistically, the British found himself in a very complex situation, since, in a duel between two active boxers, who seek confrontation and who have a good punch rate, the advantage is for the one who has more power and strength. In this way, the Spanish connected hard power shots that, although did not generate critical damage, were more striking fists and made the majority of the observers see the visitor as deserving of victory despite the verdict of the judges favorable to the local.
After that controversial fight, Warrington ended up being crowned and climbed to the number 1 in the division on many unofficial rankings with wins against Lee Selby and Carl Frampton, although, after boxing stopped in 2020, he renounced to his world belt and he suffered his terrible defeat against the puncher Mauricio Lara, whom he could not beat in the rematch. On the other hand, at the same time that Warrington was losing momentum, Martínez refloated after the boxing break, first losing controversially against a Zelfa Barrett with a great advantage in size and later brutally knocking out world champion Kid Galahad, against whom Warrington could only obtain a questionable split decision win in a clash full of clinches.
After these opposite directions in their careers, Martínez and Warrington face each other this Saturday in a very interesting rematch, again on the scenario of the first clash, the First Direct Arena in Leeds, United Kingdom, where they will headline an evening of Matchroom Boxing and DAZN.
Uniting the elements, Martínez comes from a superior victory against a common rival, Warrington suffered severe punishment against Lara that seemed to take a toll on his performance and confidence and “La Sensación” still has stylistic advantages due to his power combined with the tendency of the local to look for exchanges. All in all, although Martínez is by no means above his chances in this rematch and he is now the IBF featherweight world titlist, the betting odds have placed him as an underdog at 3/1, which is equivalent to say that he has very little chance of success.
If Warrington were a boxer with an unbreakable chin, amazing agility, good punch, very effective defense and no tactical mistakes, he could be considered the clear favourite. But it is unexpected that his victory seems so likely when he is a boxer who is not very fast with his legs or hands, who in the last four and a half years has only achieved one stoppage victory, who was dangerously beaten in his penultimate clash, who doesn’t have great morale at the moment and who is facing an opponent coming off a great knockout and who already offered him a very difficult fight years ago.
If Warrington stays constantly mobile avoiding exchanges, throws a high volume of punches, and manages to avoid Martinez’s most dangerous charges, reaching the final bell, it is possible that the judges will give the decision to the local idol, although he would have to withstand a very threatening pressure from the visitor. However, if, as almost always, “The Leeds Warrior” is unable to avoid exchanges at close-mid range, and does not find an unexpected decisive hand, it is very possible that he will be immersed in a very demanding battle in which Martínez would have an obvious chance of victory due to his formidable tenacity, his good selection of hands and, beyond his punch, his excellent management of power shots.
Main undercard
Three other fights stand out on the card, one of them the lightweight bout between the British Maxi Hughes 24(5KO)-5(2)-2 and Ryan Walsh 27(12KO)-3-2. Hughes, who has achieved wins against Kotochigov, Carroll and Straffon since a loss to Liam Walsh (Ryan’s twin brother), intends to exploit his great moment and add a victory to his record against a featherweight who has recently been defeated by James Dickens, boxer with some similarities with his style. In any case, although Hughes is the favourite, Walsh is an aggressive, resilient boxer and, while it is possible that he could be neutralized by a tactical approach, he could put his opponent in problems if he over-exchanges.
The other two matches will be an IBF super bantamweight world championship in which Eddie Hearn wants his protégé Ebanie Bridges 7(3KO)-1 to be crowned monarch in a second attempt, this time against Argentine titleholder María Cecilia Román 16(0KO)-5-1, and a fight for the very promising British super lightweight Dalton “Thunder” Smith 9(7KO)-0 against the Irish Ray Moylette 12(5KO)-1.
