No fueron pocos los que consideraron un error que Top Rank optase por dejar de representar al peso superligero dominicano Elvis Rodríguez 13(12KO)-1-1 tras su derrota ante Kenneth Sims. Esta opinión se afianzó con la victoria de Rodríguez en su debut con PBC ante Juan Pablo Romero y para muchos definitivamente se convirtió en una certeza la pasada noche, cuando derrotó al argentino Juan José Velasco 23(14KO)-3(3) con una extraordinaria actuación y un KO en el séptimo asalto.
Aunque Velasco empezó teniendo la iniciativa, su avance no se tradujo en resultados positivos, sino que erró manos ante la buena defensa del ágil Rodríguez y recibió sus jabs, sus hooks al torso y sus contras en directo. Después de tres asaltos de control táctico en una pelea con limitado ritmo y de que Velasco tuviese escasos éxitos con sus arremetidas, el zurdo dominicano estremeció a su rival con un gancho diestro a la contra en el cuarto round y se mostró más agresivo con sus izquierdazos. Así, para el quinto asalto Rodríguez ya poseía la iniciativa y generaba mucho peligro con sus certeros y variados golpes de poder ante un Velasco que intentó realizar contraofensivas pero que terminó atacado contra las cuerdas.
La tendencia favorable para Rodríguez se mantuvo en los siguientes minutos, luciendo con sus rápidas combinaciones de directo-gancho y sus hooks diestros enlazados con uppercuts de esta misma mano, aunque el valiente argentino (que sufría un corte en el párpado izquierdo) aguantó los puños y trató de responder hasta que en el séptimo episodio cayó a la lona por un gancho diestro. Más tarde en este mismo asalto, Velasco volvió a ser arrojado al tapiz por un nuevo curvo diestro precedido por ganchos y uppercuts. Finalmente, hubo un tercer knockdown causado por una izquierda, produciéndose entonces el final del enfrentamiento.
Al margen de que Rodríguez venció a Velasco en un round menos de lo que necesitó Regis Prograis, el hecho principal es que su eficacia defensiva y ofensiva fue fantástica, logrando un increíble porcentaje de acierto en golpes de poder del 63% (un 50% ya es una gran cifra). Por ello, y pareciendo que su trabajo con Freddie Roach está dando buenos frutos y que cada vez muestra un boxeo más pulido, hábil y sólido, Rodríguez no debería tardar en verse en una prueba de fuego, señalando tras la pugna que le gustaría enfrentarse a Gervonta Davis, a Rolly Romero o a cualquier púgil de nivel alto.

Many considered a mistake that Top Rank chose to stop representing the Dominican super lightweight Elvis Rodríguez 13(12KO)-1-1 after his loss to Kenneth Sims. This opinion was strengthened by Rodríguez’s victory in his PBC debut against Juan Pablo Romero and for many it definitely became a certainty last night, when he defeated Argentine Juan José Velasco 23(14KO)-3(3) with an extraordinary performance and a seventh-round KO.
Although Velasco started taking the initiative, his advance did not translate into positive results, as he missed punches against the good defense of the agile Rodríguez and received his jabs, his hooks to the body and his straight counters. After three rounds of tactical control in a fight without a high pace and Velasco having little success with his attacks, the southpaw rocked his opponent with a counter right hook in the fourth round and became more aggressive with his straight lefts. Thus, by the fifth round, Rodríguez had the initiative and generated a lot of danger with his accurate and varied power shots against Velasco, who tried to throw counteroffensives but ended up attacked on the ropes.
The favorable trend for Rodríguez continued in the following minutes, shinning with his fast straight-hook combinations and his right hooks linked with uppercuts from this same hand, although the brave Argentine (who suffered a cut on his left eyelid) resisted and tried to answer until the seventh round, when he fell to the canvas by a right hook. Later in this same round, Velasco was again thrown to the mat by a new right hook preceded by precise hooks and uppercuts. Finally, there was a third knockdown caused by a left hand, ending then the match.
Apart from the fact that Rodríguez beat Velasco in one less round than Regis Prograis needed, the most important thing is that his defensive and offensive efficiency was extraordinary, achieving an incredible 63% in power shots (50% is a very good percentage). For this reason, and seeming that his work with Freddie Roach is giving results and that every time he is showing a more polished, skillful and solid boxing, Rodríguez could soon fight in a decisive test, stating after the fight that he would like to face Gervonta Davis, Rolly Romero or any other high level fighter.
