Sergey Kovalev no será el único excampeón semipesado que iniciará pronto una andadura en el peso crucero, puesto que el colombiano Eleider Álvarez, que fue monarca mundial WBO al derrotar al propio Kovalev (el ruso ganó la revancha), ha confirmado que también ascenderá a la división de los 90,7 kg o 200 lb. Según han confirmado oficialmente las promotoras GYM y Probellum, su primera pugna en esta nueva etapa llegará el día 5 de mayo en el Casino de Montreal, Canadá, donde se medirá a un oponente que será anunciado en los próximos días. Se debe recordar que Álvarez no combate desde agosto de 2020, cuando perdió por KOT en el noveno round una eliminatoria del peso semipesado ante Joe Smith Jr.
