Una de las preferencias actuales de los matchmakers de boxeadoras con aspiraciones entre el peso pluma y el peso wélter es buscarles contrincantes que hayan sido oponentes de la top 3 libra por libra Katie Taylor. Los ejemplos son numerosos, siendo el último el que tendrá lugar este sábado en The Hangar en Costa Mesa, Estados Unidos, donde la monarca unificada WBO-IBF del peso superpluma, la estadounidense Mikaela Mayer 16(5KO)-0, se enfrentará a su compatriota Jennifer Han 18(1KO)-4-1, que viene de ser derribada y derrotada (decisión unánime) en el peso ligero por Taylor.
El interés de este movimiento es evidente. Por un lado, los apoyos de Mayer, o sea Top Rank y ESPN, aprovecharán cualquier oportunidad que les dé la púgil ante Han para hacer promoción de ella alabándola a través de comparativas con la actuación de Taylor ante esta misma oponente. Por otro lado, el tipo de victoria que logre Mayer y la forma en que la obtenga les servirá a ella y a su equipo para evaluar a qué distancia está en nivel respecto a la estrella irlandesa.
Dicho esto, se da por sentado que Mayer logrará la victoria, siendo favorita con mucho margen (se pagan 12€ por Han). Algunos quizás apunten que Mayer viene de lograr una victoria controvertida en una muy iguala pelea en la que (pese a las cartulinas corruptas hasta la médula) tuvo muchísimo trabajo. Con todo, su anterior oponente era la máxima rival en la lucha por el número 1 del peso superpluma, la temible francesa Maiva Hamadouche, una boxeadora fortísima, con altísima presión y mucha combatividad, estilo que nada tiene que ver con el de Han.
Normalmente, Han suele boxear en larga y con un ritmo bastante limitado, mientras que si trata de tomar la iniciativa suele tener más riesgo de embarrar la pelea que de tener éxitos determinantes trabajando en corta. Por ello, una Mayer con más altura, mejor técnica, ventaja en velocidad, más joven y que controla bien los espacios, debería poder imponer sus fugaces uno-dos, su largo jab y sus útiles combinaciones, junto a eficaces acciones defensivas, para conseguir una victoria incuestionable.
De lograr el triunfo, Mayer quedará a la espera de que Matchroom Boxing pacte de una vez por todas la unificación de títulos mundiales WBA-WBC entre Alycia Baumgardner y Hyun Mi Choi para enfrentarse a la ganadora por la corona indiscutida.
Respaldo de la cartelera
Acompañando al Mayer-Han se producirán varios combates destacables, siendo uno de ellos el que disputará en el peso wélter el invicto estadounidense Giovani “El Gallo de Oro” Santillán 28(15KO)-0 ante el colombiano Jeovanis Barraza 23(15KO)-2(2). El favorito Santillán apunta a una decisiva pelea ante un top 15 próximamente, pero mientras tanto se mantendrá preparado y realizará comparaciones midiéndose a un Barraza que ha sufrido sus únicas derrotas ante el duro Alexis Rocha y el dos veces olímpico Gabriel Maestre.
Por otro lado, en el respaldo dos boxeadores muy bien ranqueados disputarán rodajes, siendo uno el aspirante obligatorio IBF del peso pluma Luis Alberto “El Venado” López 24(13KO)-2, que no debería tener problemas para batir antes del límite a Raúl Chirino 19(12KO)-13(9), y el otro el 5º WBA, 6º WBO y 8º WBC del peso supermosca Andrew Moloney 22(14KO)-2, que se enfrentará a un boxeador resistente y experimentado como Gilberto Mendoza 19(10KO)-11(2)-3.
Finalmente, en la cartelera también destacan nuevas peleas para dos olímpicos, el peso superligero mexicano Lindolfo Delgado 14(12KO)-0, que buscará un nuevo knockout ante el argentino Gustavo Vittori 25(12KO)-10(7)-1, y el estadounidense, plata en Tokyo 2020, Duke Ragan 4(1KO)-0, que dará un paso adelante importante en aumento de dificultad midiéndose al mexicano Diuhl Olguín 15(10KO)-21(3)-5.
El Mayer-Han y el Santillán-Barraza serán emitidos por ESPN y ESPN Deportes el sábado desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT, mientras que el respaldo será ofrecido por ESPN+ desde las 19:00 ET/16:00 PT. En España y otros países se podrá comprar un PPV de Fite que iniciará su retransmisión a las 2:00 de la madrugada.

One of the current preferences of the matchmakers of female boxers with aspirations between featherweight and welterweight is to look for opponents who have faced the top 3 pound for pound Katie Taylor. The examples are numerous, the last of them being the one that will take place this Saturday at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, United States, where the unified WBO-IBF super featherweight champion, the American Mikaela Mayer 16(5KO)-0, will face her compatriot Jennifer Han 18(1KO)-4-1, who is coming of a knockdown and a defeat (unanimous decision) in a lightweight clash against Taylor.
The interest of this movement is evident. On the one hand, Mayer’s allies, namely Top Rank and ESPN, will take any opportunity that the fighter gives them against Han to praise her through comparisons to Taylor’s performance against this same opponent. On the other hand, the type of victory Mayer achieves and the manner in which she obtains it will help her and her team gauge how far she is in level from the Irish star.
That said, it is assumed that Mayer will pull off the win, as she is wide favorite (Han is 11/1 underdog). Some may point out that in her last fight Mayer won with controversy a very close fight in which she (despite the corrupt scorecards) had a lot of work. All in all, her previous opponent was her main rival in the fight for the number 1 at super featherweight, the fearsome Maiva Hamadouche, a very strong boxer, with high pressure and a lot of combativeness, style that has nothing to do with Han’s.
Normally, Han boxes from long range and with a fairly limited pace, while if she tries to take the initiative she is more likely to entangle the fight than to have decisive successes working at close range. Therefore, a boxer as Mayer, with more height, better technique, advantage in speed and very good control of the distance, should be able to impose her one-twos, her long jab and her useful combinations, together with effective defensive actions, to achieve an unquestionable victory.
After it, Mayer would have to wait for Matchroom Boxing to close a deal, once and for all, for the unification of the WBA-WBC world titles between Alycia Baumgardner and Hyun Mi Choi to face the winner for the undisputed belt.
Undercard
Accompanying Mayer-Han there will be several fights, one of them being the one that the undefeated American Giovani “El Gallo de Oro” Santillán 28(15KO)-0 will have against Colombian Jeovanis Barraza 23(15KO)-2. The favorite Santillán points to a decisive fight against a top 15, but in the meantime he will remain prepared and draw comparisons fighting Barraza, who has suffered his only losses against the tough Alexis Rocha and the two-time Olympian Gabriel Maestre.
Also, two very well-ranked boxers will fight in tune-ups, one being the mandatory IBF featherweight challenger Luis Alberto “El Venado” López 24(13KO)-2, who should have no problem beating by stoppage Raúl Chirino 19(12KO)-13(9), and the other the 5th WBA, 6th WBO and 8th WBC super flyweight Andrew Moloney 22(14KO)-2, who will face the tough and experienced boxer Gilberto Mendoza 19(10KO)-11(2)-3.

The Mayer-Han and Santillán-Barraza will air on ESPN and ESPN Deportes on Saturday from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT, while the undercard will be offered through ESPN+ from 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT. In UK the card will be broadcasted by Sky and in other countries through a Fite PPV.
