Lubin y Fundora sufrieron knockdowns en emocionante combate ganado por “The Towering Inferno”

La polémica victoria ante Sergio García no era un gran precedente para acceder a la decisiva pugna ante Erickson “The Hammer” Lubin 24(17KO)-2(2), pero Sebastián “The Towering Inferno” Fundora 19(13KO)-0, en el combate más importante de su carrera, logró derribar a su oponente y vencerle en el noveno asalto tras sufrir un knockdown. Con ello, Fundora ni más ni menos que se aseguró una oportunidad mundialista.
En el primer asalto Lubin tuvo éxito con sus directos desde la distancia larga, pero en el segundo round, de forma increíblemente absurda, se paró a intercambiar con Fundora, incluso aunque sabía que ese era el terreno más peligroso. De ese modo, Fundora empezó a imponer sus eficaces curvos en corta ante un Lubin con cuestionado encaje, que no tardó en ser primero estremecido y posteriormente derribado por un duro uppercut zurdo. “The Hammer” llegó al tercer asalto, en el que fue presionado en las cuerdas por su adversario, pero resistió, sacó duros contragolpes e incluso tomó la iniciativa.
De todos modos, Lubin ya no tenía la frescura para mantenerse en larga y se vio inmerso en una pelea de desgaste con cruces de golpes en corta, planteamiento en el que llegó con algún muy amenazante hook que movió a su adversario pero en el que en líneas generales se llevó la peor parte por la superior cadencia de golpeo de Fundora. Llegados al séptimo round, Lubin estaba siendo muy duramente castigado en las cuerdas y su rostro presentaba un terrible estado (tenía una grave inflamación en el entrecejo), pero éste sacó un formidable gancho a la contra que dañó a Fundora, quien terminó cayendo al tapiz por posteriores fuertes directos y hooks.
No obstante, esto no fue el final, ni siquiera un cambio de tornas, dado que en los siguientes episodios Fundora volvió a la carga con un constante despliegue ofensivo que fijó nuevamente contra las cuerdas a Lubin, que volvió a ser intensamente golpeado hasta que para el noveno asalto su respuesta era muy escasa y su estado de salud era preocupante. Por ello, su esquina decidió poner fin a la contienda tras el final de ese asalto.
No es conveniente que en cada combate Fundora se vea en guerras de intercambios en las que recibe tantos golpes potentes, puesto que tarde o temprano se encontrará con un adversario con más resistencia o pegada que él que le derrotará. Además, para su carrera a largo plazo, recibir tanto castigo acumulado podría tener consecuencias importantes.
Pese a ello, y aunque es cuanto menos una asombrosa falta de versatilidad que no aproveche casi nunca sus dimensiones para pelear en la distancia larga y habitualmente trate de intercambiar en corta, ahora mismo Fundora se ha posicionado en el primer puesto del ranking WBC y en posesión del título interino WBC. Así, Fundora o accederá a un combate contra el titular indiscutido que salga de la unificación total Charlo-Castaño II o, en caso de que el monarca deje vacantes su cetros, se convertirá en campeón de pleno derecho.

The controversial victory against Sergio García was not a great precedent to access to the decisive fight against Erickson «The Hammer» Lubin 24(17KO)-2(2), but Sebastian «The Towering Inferno» Fundora 19(13KO)-0, in the most important bout of his career, managed to drop his opponent and beat him in the ninth round after suffering a knockdown. With this, Fundora ensured a world championship opportunity.
In the first round Lubin was successful with his strikes from long range, but in the second round, in an incredibly absurd mistake, he stopped to exchange with Fundora, even though he knew that this was the most dangerous scenario for him in the match. In this way, Fundora began to impose his effective hooks at close range against a Lubin with questioned chin, who soon was first staggered and latter knocked down by a hard left uppercut. “The Hammer” reached the third round, in which he was pressured against the ropes, but he resisted, connected hard counterpunches and even took the initiative.
In any case, Lubin no longer had the freshness to stay at long range and was immersed in a fight of attrition with a lot of exchanges, tactical situation in which he landed some very threatening hooks that rocked his opponent but in which, overall, took the worst part due to Fundora’s superior punching rate. By the seventh round, Lubin was being punished very hard on the ropes and his face was in a terrible state (he had a serious swelling between the eyebrows), but he connected a formidable counter hook that hurt Fundora, who ended up falling to the mat by subsequent straight punches and hooks.
However, this was not the end, not even a turn of events, as in the following episodes Fundora returned to a constant attack and once again cornered Lubin, who was hit hard until in the ninth round his response was very low and his health condition was worrying. Therefore, his corner decided to end the contest after that round.
It is not convenient for Fundora to find himself in each of his fights in wars of exchanges in which he receives so many powerful blows, since sooner or later he will meet an opponent with more resistance or punch than him and who will deal him a defeat. Also, in the long-term, receiving so much accumulated punishment could have important consequences.
Despite this, and although it is at least an astonishing lack of versatility that he hardly ever takes advantage of his size to fight at long distance and usually tries to exchange, right now Fundora has positioned himself in the first place in the WBC ranking and in possession of an interim WBC title. Thus, Fundora will either access to a fight against the undisputed titleholder who comes out of the Charlo-Castaño II or, in the event that the monarch vacates his belts, will become full champion.
