Los mejores combates del fin de semana (15-16/4/2022)

Este será un fin de semana un tanto diferente a los anteriores, puesto que habrán puntuales eventos mencionables rodeados de una evidente falta de nivel medio en las restantes carteleras. Aun así, centrándonos en lo destacable, sin duda habrán duelos a los que prestar mucha atención y otros que simplemente nos mantendrán entretenidos a la espera de la gran pugna de la semana.
Viernes 15 de abril
En la jornada tendrá lugar una cartelera de MTK Global, emitida a través de YouTube, en la que Gavin Gwynne y Luke Willis pelearán por el vacante cinturón británico del peso ligero. En el respaldo se producirá un campeonato de Inglaterra superwélter entre Sam Gilley y Drew Brown y participarán múltiples prospectos, destacando entre ellos el peso superpluma kazajo Sultan Zaurbek.

En el viernes también sobresale una velada organizada por DiBella Entertainment en el Garden Theater de Detroit, Estados Unidos, retransmitida por UFC Fight Pass. En ella combatirá el peso supermosca estadounidense Ja’Rico O’Quinn 14(8KO)-1(1)-1, boxeador de buena carrera amateur (fue oro nacional) que intentará regresar a la senda del triunfo tras una inesperada derrota en el primer asalto ante Saúl Sánchez el pasado septiembre. Su rival será el filipino Jobert “Lion” Álvarez 20(7KO)-2(1)-2, un púgil que aguantó la distancia ante “El Gallo” Estrada y que derrotó al actual monarca mundial minimosca Jonathan González, si bien en los últimos tiempos no ha tenido mucha actividad ni peleas relevantes, llevando inactivo desde hace dos años y medio.
En el respaldo participarán el peso pesado estadounidense Mike Balogun 18(14KO)-0, que disputará su primer combate desde su triunfo ante Trey Lippe Morrison peleando contra el mexicano Sergio Ramírez 20(12KO)-7(3), y el invicto puertorriqueño superpluma Joshafat Ortiz 9(5KO)-0, que combatirá contra un Derrick Murray 15(5KO)-4(2)-1 que ha sufrido sus derrotas ante rivales como Joet González o Jamaine Ortiz.
Además de estos combates, se pueden mencionar también los siguientes:
-En el Casino Buenos Aires, Argentina, TyC Sports emitirá un combate del peso pluma en el cual el dos veces olímpico argentino Alberto “Impacto” Melián 9(5KO)-2 volverá al ring un año después de haber sufrido cuatro knockdowns en su victoria ante Frency Fortunato Saya. Su rival será el fogueadísimo y resistente Alan Luques 27(10KO)-11(2)-1, que ha aguantado la distancia ante rivales como Anthony Cacace o Diego de la Hoya.
-En el DoubleTree Hotel de Ontario, Estados Unidos, se emitirá por YouTube una pugna del exaspirante mundial del peso pluma Rubén Villa 18(5KO)-1, que disputará su primer combate desde su derrota ante Emanuel Navarrete peleando contra un Horacio García 35(25KO)-5-1 que retornó al ring en febrero con una destacable victoria ante Isaac Zárate.
-En el Seagate Convention Center de Toledo, Estados Unidos, el oro en los Golden Gloves Albert Bell 20(6KO)-0, 7º WBO y 14º WBC en el peso superpluma, disputará su segundo combate del año en un rodaje ante el nicaragüense Martín Díaz 18(8KO)-11(2)-2.
Sábado 16 de abril
Ni que decir tiene que el mayor evento de la semana será el que contará en su choque estelar con la triple unificación de cinturones mundiales del peso wélter entre Errol Spence Jr. y Yordenis Ugás, quedando el ganador a un único título de proclamarse campeón indiscutido en la división.

En el respaldo, que se dividirá entre PPV y emisión en abierto, se producirán los combates Isaac Cruz vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa, José Valenzuela vs. Francisco Vargas, Cody Crowley vs. Josesito López, Brandun Lee vs. Zachary Ochoa y el excelente enfrentamiento del peso wélter entre los invictos Radzhab Butaev y Eimantas Stanionis.

Comparativamente con este evento, no habrá nada tan destacable en la jornada, si bien se puede mencionar que Matchroom Boxing y DAZN ofrecerán unas horas antes una cartelera en la que el 5º WBA y WBO del peso wélter Conor Benn peleará contra Chris Van Heerden, pelea que ha conllevado bastantes críticas para la promotora. Respaldando a este combate se producirán el campeonato de Europa del peso crucero Chris Billam-Smith vs. Tommy McCarthy II y el mundial femenino WBC superpluma Alycia Baumgardner vs. Edith Matthysse.

Por otro lado, en el Telford International Centre de Telford, Reino Unido, BT Sport televisará una velada del promotor Frank Warren en la que tendrá lugar un campeonato de Europa del peso supergallo. En él, el titular Jason “The Iceman” Cunningham 30(6KO)-6(1), que dio un vuelco a su carrera venciendo contra pronóstico a Gamal Yafai, expondrá por segunda vez su corona midiéndose al retador francés Terry Le Couviour 16(2KO)-0, un extitular de la Unión Europea, invicto y motivado que debería darlo todo en el ring. Aun así, Le Couviour no pelea desde hace un año y medio, cuenta con muy escasa pegada y tiene una descomunal desventaja en experiencia de calidad, por lo que Cunningham es claro favorito para imponer su inteligencia de ring y ganar por decisión.
Acompañando al Cunningham-Couviour, el invicto peso medio Nathan “Hitman” Heaney 14(6KO)-0 afrontará uno de sus tests más relevantes hasta la fecha ante el competente argentino Diego Ramírez 24(6KO)-6(1)-1, que en 2018 logró una excelente victoria en Reino Unido ante Bradley Skeete, y el prospecto supergallo Andrew Cain 8(7KO)-0 disputará su primer combate a diez asaltos ante el titular argentino y sudamericano Pablo Ariel Gómez 15(1KO)-10(2)-2, que suma tres triunfos después de su victoria ante Omar Narváez.
Finalmente, sobresale también en este sábado un combate del peso ligero que tendrá lugar en el Hall Omnisport de La Préalle, Herstal, Bélgica. En él se enfrentarán el local, 7º WBO, Francesco Patera 25(9KO)-3 y el español Samuel Molina 19(10KO)-1(1), siendo este un bien emparejado e interesante choque en el que un púgil consolidado, con aspiraciones internacionales y que puede llegar a ofrecer un boxeo bastante táctico se medirá a un joven púgil con ambición, agresivo y con clara ventaja en pegada.
Teniendo en cuenta que Patera sólo ha logrado 3 triunfos antes del límite en los últimos seis años y que se enfrenta a un peligroso y explosivo púgil que tuvo un positivo en control antidopaje, esta no parece una pugna nada sencilla para el belga, que necesitará mucha consistencia y su versión más astuta y elusiva si quiere evitar padecer una derrota que le alejaría decisivamente de sus máximos objetivos.

This will be a somewhat different weekend than the previous ones, since there will be occasional mentionable events surrounded by an evident lack of quality in the remaining cards. Even so, focusing on what stands out, there will undoubtedly be duels to pay close attention to and others that will simply keep us entertained while waiting for the big fight of the week.
Friday, April 15
On this day a MTK Global card, broadcast through YouTube, will feature a British lightweight championship between Gavin Gwynne and Luke Willis. In the support there will be an English super welterweight championship between Sam Gilley and Drew Brown and multiple bouts for prospects, as Kazakh super featherweight Sultan Zaurbek. Also stands out on Friday an evening organized by DiBella Entertainment at the Garden Theater in Detroit, United States, broadcast by UFC Fight Pass. In it will fight American super flyweight Ja’Rico O’Quinn 14(8KO)-1(1)-1, boxer with a good amateur career (he was national gold medalist) who will try to return to winning ways after an unexpected defeat in the first round against Saúl Sánchez last September. His rival will be Filipino Jobert «Lion» Álvarez 20(7KO)-2(1)-2, a fighter who reached the final bell against «El Gallo» Estrada and who defeated the current light flyweight world champion Jonathan González, although recently has not had much activity or relevant fights, having been inactive for two and a half years.
In the undercard will participate the American heavyweight Mike Balogun 18(14KO)-0, who will have his first bout since his win over Trey Lippe Morrison battling Mexican Sergio Ramírez 20(12KO)-7(3), and the undefeated Puerto Rican super featherweight Joshafat Ortiz 9(5KO)-0, who will fight against Derrick Murray 15(5KO)-4(2)-1, who has suffered his losses against rivals such as Joet González or Jamaine Ortiz.

It goes without saying that the biggest event of the week will be the one that will feature the triple unification of welterweight world belts between Errol Spence Jr. and Yordenis Ugás. Compared to this event, there will be nothing so remarkable on the day, although it can be mentioned that Matchroom Boxing and DAZN will offer a card a few hours before in which the 5th WBA and WBO welterweight Conor Benn will fight against Chris Van Heerden, bout which has generated a lot of criticism for the promoter. Accompanying this fight will be the European cruiserweight championship Chris Billam-Smith vs. Tommy McCarthy II and the WBC world female super featherweight championship Alycia Baumgardner vs. Edith Matthysse. At the Telford International Center in Telford, United Kingdom, BT Sport will televise an evening organized by promoter Frank Warren and which will have an European super bantamweight championship as main event. In it, the titleholder Jason “The Iceman” Cunningham 30(6KO)-6(1), who turned his career around with an upset win over Gamal Yafai, will defend his crown for the second time against French challenger Terry Le Couviour 16(2KO)-0, a former European Union titleholder, undefeated and motivated who should give it his all in the ring. Still, Le Couviour hasn’t fought in a year and a half, has very little punch and has a massive disadvantage in quality experience, these making Cunningham the clear favorite to impose his ring inteligence and win by decision.
Accompanying the Cunningham-Couviour, undefeated middleweight Nathan “Hitman” Heaney 14(6KO)-0 will face one of his most important tests to date against the competent Argentine Diego Ramírez 24(6KO)-6(1)-1, who in 2018 achieved an excellent victory in the UK against Bradley Skeete, and super bantamweight prospect Andrew Cain 8(7KO)-0 will have his first ten-round fight against Argentine and South American beltholder Pablo Ariel Gómez 15(1KO)-10(2)-2, who has obtained three wins since his victory against Omar Narváez.
Finally, at the Omnisport Hall in La Préalle, Herstal, Belgium, will take place an interesting lightweight duel. The contenders in it will be the local, 7th WBO, Francesco Patera 25(9KO)-3 and the Spaniard Samuel Molina 19(10KO)-1(1), this being a well matched and interesting bout in which a consolidated boxer, with international aspirations and that can offer a quite tactical boxing will fight against a young, ambitious and aggressive rival that has a clear advantage in power.
Taking into account that Patera has only obtained three stoppage wins in the last six years and that he faces a dangerous and explosive fighter who had a positive in anti-doping test, this does not seem like an easy fight for the Belgian, who will need a lot of consistency and his most cunning and elusive version if he wants to avoid suffering a defeat that would decisively distance him from his goals.
