Decir que el semifondo del evento Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano podría ser perfectamente el choque principal de otra cartelera no es una exageración, sino que verdaderamente el estadounidense Jessie Vargas 29(11KO)-3-2 y el británico Liam Smith 30(17KO)-3(1)-1 estaban emplazados a enfrentarse encabezando una velada en febrero antes de que el choque fuese cancelado por enfermedad del primero. Así, que finalmente pugnen en la posición coestelar de la citada cartelera ilustra claramente el buen nivel medio de la misma.
Aunque es cierto que no son los boxeadores mejor valorados por el público, el hecho es que Vargas y Smith son dos excampeones mundiales, con una base técnica sólida, con resistencia al castigo y que tienen experiencia de calidad. Además, Smith es 4º WBC y WBO y 5º WBA en el peso superwélter, por lo que el ganador dará un paso muy importante para acceder a una eliminatoria en la división.
De todos modos, aunque es un combate interesante entre púgiles capaces, el hecho es que Smith parece un boxeador en un nivel superior y que está en condiciones de anotarse la victoria.
Al margen de las derrotas ante Pacquiao, Bradley y Mikey García, que no son un gran demérito, Vargas ha tenido combates muy igualados y exigentes ante Thomas Dulorme, Adrien Broner, Allakhverdiev, Wale Omotoso, etc., lo que pone de manifiesto sostenidos problemas para marcar la diferencia en choques ante rivales por debajo del nivel de la élite del peso wélter y superligero. Por contra, el asentado superwélter Smith, que sólo ha padecido derrotas ante Canelo, Munguía y con controversia ante Kurbanov, da la sensación de tener más soluciones para imponer su dominio de forma clara o para decantar las acciones cuando están parejas, siendo un buen ejemplo de esto su reciente triunfo por KOT ante el olímpico Anthony Fowler.
Por si todo esto fuese poco, Vargas no pelea desde hace más de dos años (Smith peleó hace seis meses), por lo que es probable que si el británico puede ofrecer una buena versión de sí mismo y aprovecha su infravalorada astucia, su precisión con los golpes de poder y su versatilidad consiga la victoria ante un boxeador fuerte, tenaz y bravo pero que en ocasiones parece tener menos variedad de recursos y menos capacidad de reacción táctica de las necesarias en la parte alta.
Reina del peso supermedio
En el evento Taylor-Serrano, que se producirá el sábado en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, el choque estelar no será el único que tendrá una corona indiscutida en juego (peso ligero), puesto que en el respaldo se decidirá también a la reina absoluta del peso supermedio femenino. Y es que la estadounidense Franchon Crews-Dezurn 7(2KO)-1 y la sueca Elin Cederroos 8(4KO)-0 unificarán los cinturones WBA, WBC, IBF y WBO de la citada división.
Esta pelea ha tenido múltiples fechas tentativas, pero ha tenido que ser aplazada por diversas razones, disputándose finalmente este sábado, 15 meses después del último combate de Crews-Dezurn y 27 meses desde el más reciente de Cederroos. Este factor favorable a la local no es el único que hace probable el triunfo de ésta, ya que Crews-Dezurn, pese a su lentitud y a la tosquedad que a veces muestra en el golpeo, es muy fuerte y es capaz de golpear con bastante brutalidad con sus curvos.
Por ello, teniendo Cederroos un boxeo basado en los rectos de poco recorrido y escasa explosividad y siendo posible que la pelea se pueda embarrar con desordenados encontronazos, Crews-Dezurn debería poder lograr el triunfo si descarga con buena cadencia sus llamativos curvos y si sabe aprovechar el frontal posicionamiento de la visitante.
Yafai y Williams
El respaldo principal se completará con dos peleas para imbatidos prospectos. Uno de ellos es el oro olímpico británico Galal Yafai 1(1KO)-0, que tras su impresionante debut profesional hace dos meses disputará su segundo choque en el boxeo de pago (el primero en Estados Unidos) enfrentándose en el peso mosca al local Miguel Cartagena 17(8KO)-6(3)-1, púgil fogueado y que ha padecido sus derrotas ante rivales como Brian Viloria, Emmanuel Rodríguez o “Meserito” Rodríguez. De todos modos, pese a su bagaje, Cartagena tiene bastantes brechas y hace tiempo que no disputa una pelea de nivel, por lo que Yafai será evidente favorito.
En cuanto al otro, el prometedor peso medio estadounidense Austin “Ammo” Williams 10(8KO)-0, que está mostrando un muy buen rendimiento, afrontará su mayor test hasta la fecha en su primer choque a diez rounds. Williams se enfrentará a su invicto compatriota Chordale Booker 17(7KO)-0, oro nacional estadounidense como amateur con obvias cualidades pero que, tras victorias poco convincentes ante Ve Shawn Owens y Sanny Duversonne, pretende ser utilizado como un escalón hacia el top 15
El enfrentamiento Taylor-Serrano y el respaldo arriba mencionado serán emitidos por DAZN el sábado desde las 19:30 ET/16:30 PT, la 1:30 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en hora peninsular española.

To say that the co-feature of the card Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano could perfectly be the main clash of another evening is not an exaggeration, as actually the American Jessie Vargas 29(11KO)-3-2 and the British Liam Smith 30(17KO)-3(1)-1 were set to headline an event in February before the clash was canceled due to an illness suffered by the former. Thus, the fact that they will finally fight in the co-main event of Saturday’s card clearly illustrates the good level of this evening.
Although it is true that they are not very well rated by the fans, the fact is that Vargas and Smith are two former world champions, with a solid technical base, with resistance to punishment and who have quality experience. In addition, Smith is 4th WBC and WBO and 5th WBA at super welterweight, so the winner will take a very important step forward to access an eliminator in the division.
Still, while it’s an interesting matchup between capable fighters, Smith looks like a boxer at a higher level and in position to obtain the win.
Letting aside the losses to Pacquiao, Bradley and Mikey Garcia, which are not a great demerit, Vargas has had very close and demanding fights against Thomas Dulorme, Adrien Broner, Allakhverdiev, Wale Omotoso, etc., which shows sustained problems to make the difference in bouts against opponents below the elite level of the welterweight and super lightweight divisions. On the contrary, the super welterweight Smith, who has only suffered defeats against Canelo, Munguía and with controversy against Kurbanov, seems to have more solutions to clearly impose his tactical dominance or to win the fight when its even, being a good example of this his recent victory by TKO against the Olympian Anthony Fowler.
As if all this were not enough, Vargas has not fought for more than two years (Smith fought six months ago), so it is likely that if the British can offer a good version of himself and takes advantage of his underrated cunning, his precision with the power shots and his versatility he could achieve a victory against a strong, tenacious and brave boxer but who sometimes seems to have less variety of resources and less tactical reaction capacity than it is necessary at the top.
Queen of the super middleweight division
In the Taylor-Serrano event, which will take place on Saturday at the Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, the main clash will not be the only one that will have an undisputed crown at stake (lightweight), since the queen of the female super middleweight division will be crowned in the support. That is because the American Franchon Crews-Dezurn 7(2KO)-1 and the Swedish Elin Cederroos 8(4KO)-0 will unify the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO world belts.
This fight had multiple tentative dates and had been postponed for various reasons, finally taking place this Saturday, 15 months after the last Crews-Dezurn fight and 27 months since the most recent bout of Cederroos. This favorable factor for the local boxer is not the only one that makes it likely that she will win, since Crews-Dezurn, despite her slowness and a certain punching roughness, is very strong and is capable of hitting quite brutally with her overhands.
For this reason, and as Cederroos has a boxing based on straight punches with little explosiveness and it is possible that the fight could get entangled with messy exchanges, Crews-Dezurn should be able to achieve victory if she throws her hard hooks with good frecuency and if she knows how to take advantage of the frontal positioning of the visitor.
Yafai and Williams
The main card will be rounded out by two fights for unbeaten prospects. One of them is the British Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai 1(1KO)-0 who, after his impressive professional debut two months ago, will have his second match in the paid ranks (the first in the United States) facing the local Miguel Cartagena 17(8KO)-6(3)-1, a seasoned boxer who has suffered his losses against rivals such as Brian Viloria, Emmanuel Rodríguez or “Meserito” Rodríguez. In any case, despite his experience, Cartagena has plenty of flaws and hasn’t had a high-level fight in a long time, so Yafai will be the clear favorite in this flyweight bout.
As for the other bout, promising American middleweight Austin “Ammo” Williams 10(8KO)-0, who is having very good performances, will face his biggest test to date in his first ten-round match. Williams will clash against his undefeated compatriot Chordale Booker 17(7KO)-0, US national gold medalist with obvious qualities but who, after unconvincing wins against Ve Shawn Owens and Sanny Duversonne, is seen as a beatable rival that could be used as a stepping stone towards the top 15.
