Previa: Canelo Álvarez intentará volver a coronarse en el peso semipesado enfrentándose a Dmitry Bivol

La estructura básica de la próxima pelea del mexicano Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez 57(39KO)-1-2, la que encarará este sábado, es muy similar a las de sus anteriores dos combates: continuando su intento de hacer olvidar su positivo en control antidopaje y sus ventajas logradas en los despachos en el pasado, se enfrenta a un boxeador invicto, en buen estado de forma, con calidad técnica y que tiene un estilo móvil.
Dejando de lado si esta nueva tendencia positiva está dando resultados o no realmente entre los aficionados para tratar de hacerles pasar página respecto a las sombras de su trayectoria pasada, el hecho es que su enfrentamiento ante el ruso Dmitriy Bivol 19(11KO)-0 es un reto de los más complicados que ha encarado en su carrera reciente pese a que muchos infravaloren a este campeón mundial WBA del peso semipesado.
Y es que, aunque es un combate en el que se pueden realizar comparaciones con los afrontados ante Billy Joe Saunders y Caleb Plant y estos dos púgiles también cuentan con virtudes, Bivol tiene elementos que le hacen parecer más exigente. Primeramente, Bivol es un boxeador con una vida muy sana y con mucha disciplina profesional (no se puede decir esto precisamente de Saunders), que nunca ha sido derribado y que es tácticamente muy consistente (esta no es una de las cualidades de Plant). Asimismo, aunque el ruso tiene una altura parecida a la de Saunders y Plant, está asentando totalmente en una categoría superior y parece tener más inteligencia que estos dos púgiles.
A diferencia de Saunders, que cometió el error de pararse en el centro del ring con Canelo intentando hacerse respetar y pagó las consecuencias, Bivol suele ser muy consciente de sus limitaciones y suele mantenerse a una distancia prudencial en la que poder manejar la situación solventemente y sin riesgo a través de sus rectos. Por otro lado, mientras Plant se equivocó al confiar tanto en su defensa estática, siendo castigado en las cuerdas, Bivol rara vez es encerrado en el ensogado, sabiendo utilizar su agilidad para reposicionarse en el momento adecuado.
Es decir, al margen de que si David Benavídez o Jermall Charlo habrían podido o no generar una pelea más difícil o dura contra Canelo, el hecho es que, sobre el papel, asegurar que Bivol está por debajo de los últimos dos oponentes del mexicano parece injusto más allá de lo que termine sucediendo sobre el ring.
Además, los detractores de Bivol han superado los límites previstos en cuanto a sus críticas asegurando que el púgil no tiene la valentía suficiente como para este combate y que se encogerá ante los puños recibidos. Estas afirmaciones han sido especialmente curiosas viniendo de las mismas personas que aseguraron que Saunders y Plant iban a batallar como furibundos guerreros hasta el final, aunque a la hora de la verdad uno se retiró en su esquina tras el primer gran golpe de poder recibido y el otro, literalmente, durante el tiempo de pelea se dedicó a hacer cumplidos a la habilidad de Canelo mientras era golpeado hasta el knockout.
Respecto a la cuestión táctica del Canelo-Bivol, muchos están convencidos ahora de que el punto débil de Álvarez, o sea los boxeadores dinámicos, ha sido dejado atrás de manera definitiva por el púgil gracias a su evolución, materializada en una excelente gestión de los tiempos, un gran corte del ring, un muy sólido jab y una muy destacable capacidad para contragolpear avanzando. No obstante, esta cuestión no está completamente zanjada, dado que, sí bien ha combatido contra púgiles que poseen normalmente un estilo móvil, estos no lo ejecutaron bien ante él.
Desde que peleó contra Erislandy Lara, Canelo no ha vuelto a encontrarse con un constante dinamismo sin brechas por parte de un boxeador con gran carrera amateur, siendo quien más cerca de ello estuvo un Kovalev con graves problemas de resistencia al cansancio, veterano y sin un gran juego de piernas pero que llevaba una de las cartulinas empatadas ante de ser batido por KOT en el undécimo asalto.
Es decir, si en su anterior coronación en el peso semipesado Canelo tuvo que trabajar ante un púgil menos ágil, menos veloz y menos disciplinado que Bivol, el ruso podría generar dificultades si no para las piernas en ningún momento, usa su característico jab sin cesar y elige astutas entradas y salidas con cortas y compactas combinaciones de rectos. De todos modos, para que esto le dé resultados, Bivol, que es esencialmente un jabeador, necesitará encontrar la manera de poder lidiar con el duro jab de Canelo sin que éste trastoque su boxeo, evitar los momentos estáticos (especialmente en las cuerdas) y sobre todo andarse con ojo con los contragolpes diestros que su adversario buscará aprovechando sus frecuentes jabs.
Si Bivol tiene una actuación perfecta, como algunas que tuvo años atrás, Canelo podría verse en una contendida pelea táctica que le obligue a sacar lo mejor de su repertorio. Con todo, al margen de la posibilidad de que la potencia de Álvarez consiga generar un punto de inflexión decisivo en uno u otro momento, que Bivol venza parece casi imposible. En esta ocasión esto no es ya sólo debido a que Canelo haya tenido trato de favor en otros veredictos pasados, que cuente con gran encaje o que Bivol no sea un noqueador, sino que también influye la situación política.
A pesar de que su madre es coreana, de que su padre es moldavo, de que nació en Kirguistán, de que no se mudó a Rusia hasta los 11 años y de que jamás ha tenido un posicionamiento político público, Bivol cuenta con nacionalidad rusa y ha recibido repulsivas presiones en los últimos meses.
Por lo tanto, y recordando cómo se han perjudicado vergonzosamente a los boxeadores rusos en decisiones recientes (especialmente a Butaev ante Stanionis), a no ser que la élite de la industria quiera usarle como un “villano” en sus planes a gran escala futuros, es de suponer que Bivol no podrá ganar una decisión de los jueces en Estados Unidos en este momento haga lo que haga sobre el cuadrilátero… como si no fuese ya suficientemente difícil lograr la victoria en buena lid ante Canelo en este momento de su carrera.

The basic structure of the next fight of the Mexican Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez 57(39KO)-1-2, which he will face this Saturday, is very similar to those of his previous two fights: continuing his attempt to made people forget his positive in anti-doping test and his unfair advantages achieved in the negotiations in the past, he faces an undefeated boxer, in good shape, with technical quality and who has a mobile style.
Leaving aside whether or not this new positive trend is really having results among the fans to try to turn the page on the shadows of his past, the fact is that his match against the Russian Dmitriy Bivol 19(11KO)-0 is one of the most difficult challenges he has faced in his recent career despite the fact that many underestimate this WBA world light heavyweight champion.
Although it is a fight which can be compared with those against Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant and these two boxers also have virtues, Bivol has elements that make him seem more demanding. First of all, Bivol is a fighter with a very healthy life and a lot of discipline (this cannot be said about Saunders), who has never been knocked down and who is tactically very consistent (this is not one of Plant’s qualities). Also, although the Russian is about the same height as Saunders and Plant, he is totally settled into a higher division and appears to have more intelligence than these two fighters.
Unlike Saunders, who made the mistake of standing in the center of the ring with Canelo and paid the consequences, Bivol is usually very aware of his limitations and tends to keep a safe distance from which he can handle the situation through his straight punches. On the other hand, while Plant was wrong relying so much on his static defense, getting punished on the ropes, Bivol rarely gets cornered, knowing how to use his agility to reposition himself at the right time.
That is to say, regardless of whether or not David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo could have generated a more difficult or tough fight against Canelo, the fact is that, on paper, stating that Bivol is below the level of the last two opponents of the Mexican seems unfair beyond what ends up happening in the ring.
Bivol’s detractors have gone beyond the expected limits when it comes to criticizing him, assuring that the fighter does not have enough courage for this fight and that he will cower before the punches received. These statements have been especially curious coming from the same people who assured that Saunders and Plant were going to battle like furious warriors until the end, although at the moment of truth one stood in his corner after the first big power shot received and the other during fight time, literally, complimented Canelo’s skill as he was being beaten to a knockout.
Regarding the Canelo-Bivol tactical questions, many are now convinced that Álvarez’s weak point, that is boxing against movers, has been definitively left behind by the fighter thanks to his evolution, materialized in excellent timing, a great ring cut, a very solid jab and a very remarkable ability to counterpunch while moving forward. However, this question is not completely settled, since, although he has fought against fighters who normally have a mobile style, they did not execute it well against him.
Since he fought against Erislandy Lara, Canelo has never encountered a constant movement without gaps from a boxer with a great amateur career, being the one closest to it Sergey Kovalev, fighter with serious stamina problems, veteran and without a great footwork but who had one of the judges scorecards as a draw before losing by TKO in the eleventh round.
So, if in his previous light heavyweight victory Canelo had to work against a less agile, less fast and less disciplined fighter than Bivol, the Russian could cause difficulties if he moves all the time, uses his characteristic jab incessantly and goes in and out with short and astute combinations of straight punches. However, for this to work for him, Bivol, who is essentially a jaber, will need to find a way to deal with Canelo’s hard jab without it disrupting his boxing, avoid static periods (especially on the ropes) and, above all, be careful with the skillful right hand counterattacks that his opponent will look for by taking advantage of his frequent jabs.
If Bivol puts in a perfect performance, like some he had years ago, Canelo could find himself in a difficult tactical fight that forces him to bring out the best in his boxing. All in all, apart from the possibility that Álvarez’s power could generate a decisive turning point at one time or another, Bivol’s win seems almost impossible. On this occasion, this is not only because Canelo has had favorable treatment in other past verdicts, that he has great chin or that Bivol is not a knockout artist, but also due to the political situation.
Despite the fact that his mother is Korean, that his father is Moldovan, that he was born in Kyrgyzstan, that he did not move to Russia until he was 11 years old and that he has never had a public political position, Bivol has Russian nationality and has received repulsive pressures in the recent months.
Therefore, and remembering how Russian boxers have been embarrassingly treated in recent decisions (especially Butaev against Stanionis), unless the elite of the boxing industry wants to use him as a «villain» in their future large-scale plans, presumably Bivol won’t be able to win a decision from the judges in the United States right now no matter what he does in the ring… as if it wasn’t hard enough to defeat Canelo at this point in his career.
