Artur Beterbiev y Joe Smith Jr. unificarán tres cinturones mundiales del peso semipesado

Se ha hecho esperar bastante, puesto que hace más de un año desde que la pugna estuvo en la mesa de negociaciones por primera vez. De hecho, hubo un cierto momento en el que incluso pareció que no iba a tener lugar, cuando el promotor Eddie Hearn se interpuso en las conversaciones con un plan alternativo. No obstante, finalmente Top Rank y Star Boxing han confirmado ya oficialmente que el día 18 de junio, en la sala Hulu del Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, el ruso Artur Beterbiev y el estadounidense Joe Smith Jr. unificarán los cinturones mundiales WBC, IBF y WBO del peso semipesado.
De ese modo, una vez que se dispute este sábado el mundial WBA semipesado entre Canelo y Bivol sólo necesitaremos esperar poco más de un mes para conocer qué dos titulares deberán enfrentarse para coronar a un campeón indiscutido en la división. Por otro lado, más allá de la posibilidad de una unificación total de la división, el Beterbiev vs. Smith es un combate entre dos agresivos pegadores altamente motivados que debería dejar buenos golpes de poder y entretenimiento antes de un previsible desenlace antes del límite.
Además, en el semifondo de esta velada, que será emitida por ESPN, ESPN Deportes y ESPN+, el dos veces oro olímpico cubano Robeisy Ramírez se enfrentará al invicto ranqueado puertorriqueño Abraham Nova en una pelea del peso pluma que parece muy bien emparejada e interesante.
En el anuncio oficial del evento, Beterbiev, que es claro favorito para vencer, señaló:
“Tengo muchas ganas del reto que tengo frente a mí. Joe Smith Jr. es un digno campeón, pero voy a ir al Madison Square Garden para añadir otro título mundial a mi colección. Este combate me acercará un paso más a convertirme en campeón indiscutido”.
Por su parte, Smith afirmó:
“Estoy extremadamente emocionado y concentrado en esta tarea que tengo delante. Enfrentarse a Beterbiev es algo enorme. Va a ser una pelea que los fans recordarán para siempre, con dos de los mayores pegadores del boxeo actual enfrentándose. Esta oportunidad es un sueño que quiero cumplir. Pelear con tres títulos en juego es estar un paso más cerca de convertirse en indiscutido”.
