Entre enfrentarse al temible Filip Hrgović o pelear contra el estadounidense Scott Alexander 16(8KO)-5(1)-2 hay una diferencia descomunal, algo que puso de manifiesto el plata olímpico chino Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-0-1 en el primer combate del tramo principal del Canelo-Bivol. Y es que Zhang, que se había estado preparando para una eliminatoria contra el croata (uno de los contendientes más peligrosos de la división del peso pesado), sólo necesitó un round para asestarle la primera derrota antes del límite de su carrera a Alexander.
Después de ciertos ataques iniciales que llevaron hacia las cuerdas al estadounidense, Alexander se reposicionó en el centro del ring y tiró una derecha, que fue inmediatamente contestada por un tremendo izquierdazo del gigante chino. El preciso y demoledor puño del púgil de 125 kg arrojó sobre el tapiz a Alexander sin posibilidad de continuar.
Muchos no sentían un gran entusiasmo respecto al combate eliminatorio Hrgović-Zhang, ya que veían al primero con demasiada ventaja en velocidad, frescura y fluidez como para que pudiese ser vencido por el lento y veterano chino. Este análisis, que tiene mucho de racional, no se habrá visto quebrado por la aplastante victoria de Zhang ante Alexander, pero el resultado sí habrá generado algo más de interés respecto a la eliminatoria, puesto que el temprano desenlace dejó claro una vez más que con la mano adecuada este boxeador puede poner en la lona a cualquier rival.
Respecto a para cuándo se podría reubicar en el calendario el Hrgović-Zhang, Eddie Hearn ha mencionado que es probable que se pueda situar en el respaldo del evento Usyk-Joshua II, proyectado hacia julio o agosto.
Triunfo unánime de Castro
No está muy claro el motivo de que se eligiese este desparejado combate como parte de la cartelera principal del Canelo-Bivol (emitida en PPV en Estados Unidos), pero el hecho es que en este segmento el invicto peso ligero Marc Castro 7(5KO)-0 logró una amplísima victoria unánime (triple 60-54) ante el puertorriqueño Pedro Vicente Scharbaai 7(2KO)-5(2)-1, que venía de otras dos abrumadoras derrotas.
Castro era manifiestamente más fuerte, potente y tenaz y tenía mucha más motivación, por lo que con sus ataques rectos del primer asalto ya movió a su contrincante. No obstante, aunque sus golpes de poder en uno-dos y gancho zurdo generaron problemas a Scharbaai, Castro no logró causar daños críticos debido a que su ejecución de golpeo y su control de los tiempos están por pulir, lanzando muchas veces sus puños sin darles todo el recorrido y en otras empezando su transición a posición defensiva casi antes de llegar a arrojar sus manos.
En cualquier caso, estando todavía por debajo de la decena de peleas profesionales, al estadounidense le queda mucho tiempo para evolucionar y mejorar su boxeo, e igualmente su trabajo ofensivo constante y decidido le valió para superar claramente a Scharbaai, que conectó algunos buenos contragolpes y que puso voluntad pero que generalmente se vio cohibido y agobiado por los ataques de Castro.

Between facing the fearsome Filip Hrgović or fighting against the American Scott Alexander 16(8KO)-5(1)-2 there is a huge difference, something that was showed by the Chinese Olympic silver medalist Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-0-1 in the first match of the Canelo-Bivol main card. Zhang, who had been preparing for a final eliminator against the Croatian (one of the most dangerous contenders in the heavyweight division), needed only one round to deal the first stoppage defeat of his career to Alexander.
After some initial attacks that took the American to the ropes, Alexander repositioned himself in the center of the ring and threw a right hand, which was immediately answered by a tremendous left hand from the Chinese giant. The precise and devastating punch of the 275 lb (125 kg) boxer threw Alexander to the mat without chance to continue.
Many weren’t too excited about the Hrgović-Zhang elimination match, considering that the former has too much of an advantage in speed, freshness, and smoothness for him to be beaten by the slow, veteran Chinese. This analysis, which is very rational, will not have been broken by Zhang’s devastating victory against Alexander, but the result will have generated a little more interest regarding the eliminator, since the fast win made it clear once again that, with the appropriate punch, this boxer can put any opponent on the canvas.
As for when Hrgović-Zhang could be rescheduled, Eddie Hearn has mentioned that it is likely that it could be placed in the undercard of the event Usyk-Joshua II, projected for July or August.
Unanimous victory for Castro
It is not very clear why this mismatched fight was chosen as part of the Canelo-Bivol main card, but the fact is that in this segment the undefeated lightweight Marc Castro 7(5KO)-0 achieved a wide unanimous victory (triple 60-54) against Puerto Rican Pedro Vicente Scharbaai 7(2KO)-5(2)-1, who was coming from two other overwhelming defeats.
Castro was clearly stronger, more powerful and tenacious and had much more motivation, so with his straight punches in the first round he already shook his opponent. However, while his one-two power punches and left hooks gave Scharbaai trouble, Castro failed to deal critical damage, as he hasn’t a great punching technique or timing, often throwing his shots without fully extending his arms and in other moments beginning his transition to defensive position almost before he threw his hands.
In any case, having less than ten professional fights, the American has a lot of time left to evolve and improve his boxing, and his constant and determined offensive work served him to clearly defeat Scharbaai, who landed some good counterpunches and put will but was generally overcame by Castro’s attacks.
