Montana Love intercambió knockdowns con Gabriel Gollaz y posteriormente logró victoria en monótona pelea

Aunque Robbie Davies Jr. no es un boxeador bien valorado por la mayoría de fans y analistas, la victoria sobre él por un punto del mexicano Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela 25(15KO)-3(1)-1 incomprensiblemente le sirvió a éste para ser tratado por muchos como una gran figura del peso superligero, considerando incluso que noquearía fácilmente al hábil estadounidense Montana Love 18(9KO)-0-1. No obstante, la realidad se impuso sobre la sobrevaloración y Love usó su destreza para vencer el combate por merecida decisión unánime. Las puntuaciones fueron demasiado ajustadas dando triple 114-112.
La velocidad de manos, reflejos y precisión de Love quedaron rápidamente de manifiesto, llegando con zurdazos nítidos contra Gollaz. Además, el mexicano cayó al tapiz en el primer round por un cruzado diestro a la contra que recibió al intentar atacar. Esto motivó de más a un Love que tiene gran talento natural e instinto boxístico pero no tanta inteligencia de ring como se piensa, tomando riesgos innecesarios que le supusieron padecer un knockdown por un gancho zurdo en el segundo asalto.
Esta advertencia fue tenida en cuenta por el estadounidense, que en adelante usó más su juego de piernas, su control de los espacios y su rapidez para contragolpear y escoger certeras manos aisladas entre sus desplazamientos. Con este planteamiento Love pudo controlar las acciones en los siguientes rounds con sus jabs, sus izquierdas rectas y con sus contras en cruzado diestro y hook ante un Gollaz que le perseguía con voluntad pero que erraba muchas manos y que, por lo general, estaba fuera de su distancia de golpeo.
En ocasiones, cuando Love, respondiendo a los abucheos, se quedó más en la distancia media, Gollaz llegó con algunos buenos hooks o rectos diestros, pero estos puños a menudo fueron rápidamente respondidos por la explosividad del local, que logró una decisiva ventaja en las puntuaciones en la primera mitad. Y es que, ya fuese aguijoneando desde lejos, reaccionando con sus rectos en la distancia media o esquivando en corta y haciendo valer su mayor fluidez a la hora de golpear, en la pelea de bajo ritmo Love hizo más que un Gollaz demasiado inactivo, dubitativo e impreciso.
Posteriormente, viéndose por detrás en las cartulinas, Gollaz tuvo algo más de tesón ofensivo en los instantes en los que la pelea se quedó en la distancia media-corta, e incluso en algunos momentos, como en el último round, conectó ciertos potentes directos diestros. Pero, aun así, el mexicano tuvo poca frecuencia de manos y demasiada falta de precisión como para lograr remontar, desperdiciando muchos minutos en una pelea táctica en la que un Love con más recursos y cualidades técnicas tenía las de ganar o, al menos, el margen necesario para evitar verse en trascendentales apuros.
Dejando de lado si fue una decisión acertada o no situar este combate como semifondo de un cartel emitido en PPV en Estados Unidos o de si en general hubo un buen respaldo en el evento, Love no logró convencer a los aficionados con su actuación ni en cuanto al entretenimiento ofrecido ni en cuanto a la solvencia de su triunfo, por lo que no se están haciendo valoraciones muy positivas respecto a su futuro en una difícil división como el peso superligero. De todos modos, Love es 10º IBF y esta victoria (con título menor IBF en juego) mejorará algo su posicionamiento, emplazándose a una pelea crucial en el futuro próximo en la que necesitará su mejor versión si quiere mostrar que tiene lo que hace falta para poder aspirar al mundial.

Although Robbie Davies Jr. is not a well rated boxer by most fans and analysts, the one point margin victory over him by the Mexican Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela 25(15KO)-3(1)-1 incomprehensibly served him to be treated by many as a great super lightweight name, with some even considering that he would easily knock out the skilled American Montana Love 18(9KO)-0-1. However, reality prevailed over the hype and Love used his technique to win the match by a deserved unanimous decision. The scores were too close: triple 114-112.
Love’s hand speed, reflexes and accuracy were soon on display connecting crisp left hands against Gollaz. In addition, the Mexican fell to the mat in the first round by a counter right hook that he received while trying to attack. This further motivated Love, who has great natural talent and boxing instinct but not as much ring intelligence as it is thought. So, taking unnecessary risks, he ended up suffering a knockdown by a left hook in the second round.
This warning was taken into account by the American, who from then on used more of his footwork, his control of distance and his speed to counterattack and choose precise isolated hands between his movements. With this approach Love was able to control the actions in the following rounds with his jabs, his straight lefts and his right counter hooks against Gollaz, who chased him willingly but missed many hands and was usually out of his striking distance.
On occasions, when Love, reacting to the booing from the crowd, stayed closer to his rival, Gollaz landed some good left hooks or straight punches, but these shots were often quickly answered by the explosiveness of the local, who built up a decisive lead in the scorecards in the first half. Whether it was stinging from long range, reacting with his straights in the mid-range or dodging at close range while leaning on his punching skill, in the low-paced fight Love did more than a too inactive, hesitant and imprecise Gollaz.
Later, knowing he was behind on the scorecards, Gollaz had a little more offensive tenacity in the moments in which the fight stayed in the mid-close distance, and even in some moments, such as in the last round, he landed some powerful right hands. But, even so, the Mexican had little punch output and too much lack of precision to manage to come back, wasting many minutes in a tactical fight in which a boxer as Love (with more tactical resources and technical qualities) had the chance to win or, at least, the necessary margin to avoid being in crucial trouble.
Leaving aside whether or not it was a wise decision to place this fight as a co-main event of a PPV card or if there was generally a good support in the event, Love failed to convince fans with his performance, so there are now many pessimistic projections being made regarding his future in a difficult division such as super lightweight. Still, Love is 10th IBF and this win (with a minor IBF title at stake) will improve his ranking somewhat, so he keeps getting closer to a crucial fight in which he will need his best boxing if he wants to show that he has what it takes to be able to aspire to the world championship.
