Previa: Los hermanos Tervel y Kubrat Pulev se enfrentan a Sergey Kovalev y Jerry Forrest

Como la cortedad de miras de muchos promotores conlleva que un considerable número de combates destacables se amontonen en un mismo día, no serán pocos los que ni siquiera recordarán que este sábado, en el Forum de Inglewood, Estados Unidos, Triller ofrecerá una velada que contará con dos interesantes enfrentamientos, respectivamente, en la división del peso crucero y del peso pesado. En ellos participarán los hermanos búlgaros Tervel y Kubrat Pulev, que afrontarán choques significativos para sus carreras.
Centrándonos en el primero, el bronce olímpico Tervel Pulev 16(13KO)-0 de momento ha tenido seis años de carrera profesional con muy poco que destacar, sumando triunfos ante piedras de toque más o menos exigentes. No obstante, este sábado al fin afrontará su primera pelea de calibre ante el ruso, excampeón mundial unificado del peso semipesado, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev 34(29KO)-4(3)-1.
Éste iniciará con esta pelea un cambio de categoría de peso, empezando ahora una andadura en la división crucero, en la que espera lograr algunos éxitos más antes de retirarse. Con todo, estos planes no son acogidos con mucho optimismo por los fans, puesto que Kovalev lleva años dando muestras de graves problemas para gestionar el cansancio, así como un encaje cada vez más reducido. Por lo tanto, entrando además a la pelea con dos años y medio de inactividad desde su derrota por knockout ante Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez, Kovalev no debería tener precisamente un choque sencillo el sábado.
Como es un boxeador con una descomunal ventaja en experiencia de calidad profesional, que posee gran pegada y habilidad con sus golpes rectos y que tuvo un positivo en control antidopaje el año pasado, quizás a algunos les pueda parecer que Kovalev debería tener de sobra para derrotar a un Tervel Pulev sin poner a prueba. Sin embargo, Pulev es un boxeador muy fuerte, con sólidos conocimientos técnico-tácticos y no poca pegada que es consciente de que está ante el mayor combate hasta la fecha en su carrera profesional.
Así, si logra consumir los primeros asaltos sin padecer daños excesivos y logra plantear una pelea con alto desgaste físico (ya sea con un arranque muy intenso o esperando el momento para cambiar de marcha en la segunda mitad cuando su rival afloje), Pulev podría lograr una victoria que cambiaría totalmente su posición en el panorama boxísico internacional.
“The Cobra” vs. “Slugger”
En cuanto al otro hermano Pulev, el exretador mundial del peso pesado Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev 28(14KO)-2(2), éste buscará terminar un año y medio de inactividad, regresar a la senda del triunfo después de su derrota por knockout ante Anthony Joshua y reengancharse en las conversaciones en la parte alta de la división máxima. No obstante, estos objetivos los intentará alcanzar enfrentándose a un peligroso oponente como el estadounidense Jerry “Slugger” Forrest 26(20KO)-4(1)-2.
Es cierto que Forrest es un púgil bastante irregular y que, por ejemplo, encadenó una actuación por encima de las expectativas ante Jermaine Franklin con otra decepcionante ante Carlos Takam, de modo que siempre es difícil tener certezas respecto a qué rendimiento tendrá la noche de la pelea. Aun así, Forrest llega de tener un gran 2021, en el que sacó un empate (pese a caer tres veces a la lona) contra el poderoso plata olímpico Zhilei Zhang y de empatar controvertidamente (la mayoría le vio ganar el combate) contra el enrachado Michael Hunter, por lo que sin duda tiene el potencial para ofrecer mucho trabajo a un Pulev castigado, inactivo y veterano.
Teniendo en cuenta que Pulev es un boxeador de distancia larga que ha pasado dificultades en los intercambios en corta y que se enfrenta a un Forrest que ha sido ineficaz en peleas tácticas con espacios pero que está resultando ser potente y peligroso batallando cuerpo a cuerpo, los equipos de ambos púgiles deberían saber que sus posibilidades de éxito pasan por crear una pugna en la que puedan combatir en su distancia y explotar sus ventajas, minimizando las de su rival.
En este sentido, si Forrest no consigue ir más allá del jab y de las eventuales derechas de Pulev y se muestra dubitativo se verá en una posición complicada que podría ser totalmente diferente si consigue presionar con agresividad.

As the short-sightedness of some promoters often causes that a considerable number of notable fights are piled up on the same day, there will be many who will not even remember that this Saturday, at the Forum in Inglewood, United States, Triller will offer an evening that will feature two interesting matches, respectively, in the cruiserweight and heavyweight division. In them will participate the Bulgarian brothers Tervel and Kubrat Pulev, who will face significant bouts for their careers.
Focusing on the former, the Olympic bronze medalist Tervel Pulev 16(13KO)-0 has had six years of professional career with very little to highlight, adding wins against, at best, mid-level opponents. However, this Saturday he will finally have his first big fight against the Russian, former unified light heavyweight world champion, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev 34 (29KO)-4(3)-1.
With this fight Kovalev will begin a journey in the cruiserweight division, in which he hopes to achieve some more successes before retiring. However, these plans are not seen with much optimism by the fans, since Kovalev has been showing serious stamina issues for years, as well as an increasingly reduced punch resistance. So, entering the fight with two and a half years of inactivity since his knockout loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Kovalev shouldn’t exactly have an easy fight on Saturday night.
As he is a boxer with a massive advantage in professional quality experience, who possesses great punch and ability with his straight shots, and who had a positive in anti-doping test last year, it may seem to some that Kovalev should have more than enough to defeat the untested Tervel Pulev. However, Pulev is a very strong boxer, with solid technical-tactical knowledge and a good punch that is aware that he is facing the biggest opportunity in his professional career to date.
Thus, if he consumes the first rounds without suffering excessive damage and manages to create a physically demanding fight (either with a very intense start or waiting for the moment to change gears in the second half when his rival is tired), Pulev could achieve a victory that would drastically change his position in the international boxing.
«The Cobra» vs. «Slugger»
As for the other Pulev brother, former world heavyweight challenger Kubrat “The Cobra” Pulev 28(14KO)-2(2), he will seek to end a year and a half of inactivity, return to winning ways after his loss by knockout against Anthony Joshua and re-engage in talks at the top of the division. However, he will try to achieve these goals by facing a dangerous rival: the American Jerry “Slugger” Forrest 26(20KO)-4(1)-2.
It is true that Forrest is a rather irregular fighter and that, for example, he chained a performance above expectations against Jermaine Franklin with another disappointing one against Carlos Takam, so it is always difficult to be certain about what level he will have on fight night. Even so, Forrest comes from having a great 2021, in which he had a draw (despite falling three times to the canvas) against the powerful Olympic silver medalist Zhilei Zhang and a controversial draw (most saw him win the bout) against Michael Hunter, so he certainly has the potential to offer a lot of work to an inactive, punished veteran as Pulev.
Bearing in mind that Pulev is a long-distance boxer who has struggled in exchanges at close range and that he is facing a rival who has been quite ineffective in tactical fights but is proving to be dangerous without spaces, the teams of both fighters should know that their chances of success go through creating a scenario in which they can fight at their distance and exploit their advantages, minimizing those of their rival.
In this sense, if Forrest hesitates and fails to get past Pulev’s jab and his eventual right hands, he will find himself in a difficult position that could be totally different if he manages to press aggressively.
