Josh Kelly vio su combate cancelado a última hora, Brad Pauls ganó eliminatoria británica, Harlem Eubank noqueó a Dodd

Los espectadores de la velada británica de Wasserman Boxing de la pasada noche estuvieron esperando a que el olímpico Josh Kelly saltase al ring para su retorno contra Xhuljo Vrenozi, si bien la pelea nunca llegó a emitirse ni a producirse. El motivo de ello fue explicado más tarde por Kalle Sauerland, el promotor del evento, que señaló que simplemente Vrenozi se había negado a combatir el día de la pelea.
En el pesaje Kelly estuvo 1,2 kg (2,6 lb) por encima del pactado peso en la división superwélter, si bien Sauerland afirmó que el equipo de Vrenozi ya sabía que el británico no iba a dar el peso y que estaba de acuerdo con disputar el combate igualmente. No obstante, según Sauerland, en el día del combate Vrenozi cambió de opinión y señaló que no iba a pelear, tratándose de renegociar la bolsa sin resultado. Finalmente, Sauerland trató de buscar un sustituto, pero el BBBofC no dio su visto bueno a la entrada de un sustituto al combate con horas de antelación.
Así, se tendrá que esperar a una nueva fecha para ver a Kelly en el cuadrilátero, apuntándose que peleará el día 17 de junio en Liverpool.
Pauls logró su mayor triunfo
Sí se disputó en el respaldo del Bentley-Udofia la eliminatoria británica del peso medio entre Brad Pauls 16(9KO)-0 y Ryan Kelly 16(8KO)-4(1), duelo en el que el primero se impuso de forma merecida, si bien el veredicto fue dividido por culpa de Terry O’Connor, que dio un increíble 93-97 para Kelly. Sea como sea, los otros dos jueces dieron justos 96-94 y 96-95 para Pauls.
En los primeros compases de la pelea Pauls salió agresivo intentando sorprender a Kelly, que fue llevado a las cuerdas y golpeado, pero el púgil resistió bien, obligando al invicto a cambiar de estrategia y a optar por boxear desde entonces en una pelea más táctica y calmada. En ella Pauls igualmente pudo marcar la diferencia en líneas generales con su buen jab, su uno-dos y algunos hooks arriba o abajo aunque, pese a su orden, Kelly le alcanzó también con algunas buenas contras con gancho de mano adelantada.
A partir de la mitad Pauls hizo entradas más decididas con sus rectos, llevando más hacia las cuerdas a su contrincante, pero Kelly le recibió con duras contras, entre ellas directos y uppercuts diestros, que provocaron una pequeña hemorragia nasal en el invicto. Así, aunque Pauls siguió mostrándose más activo en líneas generales con su jab y sus uno-dos, lo que le daba rounds, estaba claro que Kelly no estaba dispuesto a ponerle las cosas nada fáciles, impactando buenos uppercuts en corta y algunos oportunos directos de mano adelantada.
El mejor momento para Kelly llegó finalmente en el cierre del octavo asalto, en el que dañó a su contrincante con un hook al torso creando un cambio de tornas en la pelea, aunque uno demasiado tardío. En adelante Kelly pudo trabajar más en corta y llegar con buenos curvos ante su oponente, que estaba perdiendo energías y explosividad y que daba muestras de fatiga. De ese modo, el no favorito pudo ajustar al máximo las puntuaciones, pero no le llegó para lograr la victoria.
Ganar esta pelea le supuso a Pauls situarse a la espera para disputar el campeonato británico del peso medio, que ahora mismo posee Denzel Bentley. De todos modos, más importante aún que esto fue que Pauls sumó diez muy buenos rounds de experiencia ante su mayor rival hasta la fecha, lo que le servirá para evolucionar después de haber sustentando su carrera inicial en muchas pugnas sencillas.
Eubank noqueó
En este mismo evento también se produjo una contundente victoria por KO en el segundo asalto del peso superligero Harlem Eubank 14(6KO)-0 sobre el veterano Sean Dodd 17(3KO)-7(4)-1. El invicto se desplazó ágilmente ante la presión de Dodd antes de impactar un brutal curvo zurdo a la contra que estalló contra su rival y lo arrojó a la lona. El valiente Dodd intentó ponerse en pie, pero la cuenta del árbitro se completó.

The spectators at last night’s Wasserman Boxing event were waiting for Olympian Josh Kelly to jump into the ring for his return against Xhuljo Vrenozi, although the fight never took place. The reason for this was later explained by Kalle Sauerland, the promoter of the event, who pointed out that Vrenozi had simply refused to fight on the day of the fight.
At the weigh-in Kelly was 1.2 kg (2.6 lb) over the agreed weight in the super welterweight division, although Sauerland stated that the Vrenozi team already knew that the British boxer was not going to make the weight and that they had an agreement for the fight to still go ahead. However, according to Sauerland, on the day of the bout Vrenozi changed his mind and said that he was not going to fight. Sauerland tried to renegotiate the purse without result and tried to find a substitute, but the BBBofC did not give the green light for a replacement to enter the fight so late.
Thus, we will have to wait for a new date to see Kelly again in the ring, being possible that he will fight on June 17 in Liverpool.
Pauls achieved his biggest victory
Regarding the British middleweight eliminator between Brad Pauls 16(9KO)-0 and Ryan Kelly 16(8KO)-4(1), in it the former won deservedly, although the verdict was a split decision because of Terry O’Connor, who gave an incredible 93-97 for Kelly. Be that as it may, the other two judges gave fair scorecards of 96-94 and 96-95 for Pauls.
In the beginning of the fight, Pauls came out aggressively trying to surprise Kelly, who was taken to the ropes and attacked intensely, but the boxer resisted well, forcing the undefeated to change his strategy, boxing from then on in a more tactical and calm way. Pauls was able to make a difference in general terms with his good jabs, his one-twos and some hooks up or down, although, despite his order, Kelly also hit him with some good counters with left hook.
From the mid-point Pauls made more determined offensives with his straight punches, taking his opponent towards the ropes, but Kelly answered him with hard counters, including straight shots and right uppercuts, which caused a small nosebleed in the undefeated. So, while Pauls continued to be more active in general with his jab and one-twos, which gave him rounds, it was clear that Kelly wasn’t about to make things easy for him, landing good uppercuts and some well-timed jabs.
The best moment for Kelly finally came at the end of the eighth round, in which he hurt his opponent with a hook to the body, creating a turnaround in the fight, although too late. From then on Kelly was able to work more at close range and connecting good hooks against his opponent, who was losing energy and explosiveness. In this way, the underdog was able to almost even the scorecards, but it was not enough for him to achieve victory.
With the win Pauls became mandatory challenger for the British middleweight title, which Denzel Bentley now owns. However, more importantly than this was that Pauls gained ten very good rounds of experience against his biggest opponent to date, which will help him evolve after many easy fights in his career.
Eubank won by knockout
This same event also had a resounding second round KO win by welterweight Harlem Eubank 14(6KO)-0 over veteran Sean Dodd 17(3KO)-7(4)-1. The undefeated moved nimbly under Dodd’s pressure before landing a vicious left hook on the counter that exploded against his opponent and sent him to the canvas. The brave Dodd tried to get to his feet, but the referee’s count was completed.
