Aunque se esperaba una guerra, el británico James “Kid Shamrock” Metcalf 23(14KO)-2(1) necesitaba una actuación metódica, ordenada, astuta y con riesgos controlados para derrotar al pegador español Kerman Lejarraga 34(26KO)-3(2), y esto es exactamente lo que hizo. No cayendo esta vez en el error de dejarse llevar por su coraje ni cruzar golpes de más, Metcalf combatió sobre todo aprovechando su técnica para derrotar claramente a Lejarraga. De todos modos, en su triunfo por decisión unánime las puntuaciones fueron demasiado ajustadas: 96-94, 96-95 y 97-94.
El visitante Metcalf optó acertadamente por intentar abrir el ring, jabear y escoger sus ofensivas con uno-dos o curvos salteadamente ante un Lejarraga que le perseguía sacando su sólido jab y buscando sus derechazos. Confiando en su fuerza, el británico fue creando más encontronazos en los que conectó curvos con bastante precisión, pero sus riesgos no eran desmedidos y sus aciertos eran llamativos. De hecho, en el tercer asalto Lejarraga cayó por una derecha pero sin recibir cuenta, considerando el árbitro que había sido un empujón o que el golpe había sido en la parte trasera de la cabeza.
En cualquier caso, el jab y los desplazamientos de Metcalf eran muy buenos y su desempeño con los hooks y uppercuts en corta no era nada malos tampoco, así que un Lejarraga con desventaja en velocidad y recursos técnicos necesitaba más que esporádicos golpes de poder para tratar de decantar el choque. El local añadió más presión en el cuarto asalto y llegó con un duro hook diestro y una clara derecha, pero Metcalf le contestó en el round posterior con hábiles curvos y afilados jabs. Además, el británico ejecutaba buenas transiciones a posición defensiva y parecía más fuerte en los clinches, de modo que la situación empezaba a ser cada vez más comprometida para Lejarraga.
Por tesón y determinación, el “Revólver” continuó avanzando y buscando un golpe de poder crucial, pero Metcalf usó bien los momentos con espacios a través de su jab y de su uno-dos, tuvo esquivas útiles y en corta impactó buenas manos, todo ello sin dejarse sorprender por los hooks de su rival. De ese modo, aunque Lejarraga, pese a estar cansado y tener el rostro inflamado, intentó hasta el final trabajar con sus ganchos, Metcalf fue ejecutando su táctica con eficiencia para terminar asegurándose el merecido triunfo.
Habiendo derrotado al 4º WBA del peso superwélter, Metcalf recibirá un muy buen posicionamiento en las listas y sin duda estará emplazado a una gran oportunidad ya sea en el ámbito británico o en el internacional. De todos modos, lo más positivo para su carrera es que sobre el ring resolvió sus desajustes del pasado y que, si bien en esta ocasión no entretuvo tanto como acostumbra o como se esperaba, ofreció como visitante quizás su actuación más disciplinada e inteligente, mirando al futuro ahora con renovado optimismo.
Noriega campeón de Europa
La pelea coestelar dejó la coronación de un nuevo campeón de Europa del peso mosca, Jairo Noriega 12(3KO)-0, que además dio muestras de su notable proyección derribando dos veces y batiendo por amplia decisión unánime al resistente exaspirante mundial Ángel Moreno 21(6KO)-5-3. Las cartulinas fueron de doble 118-109 y de un 116-110.
En el primer asalto un gancho zurdo a la contra de Noriega estremeció a Moreno, que seguidamente cayó al tapiz por un cruzado diestro. Sin embargo, la pelea no acabó ahí, sino que en el segundo asalto Moreno volvió al ataque con sus volados, produciéndose peligrosos intercambios entre ambos boxeadores. En ellos Noriega terminó tomando la iniciativa y conectando buenas combinaciones directo-hook, pero eventualmente Moreno intentó presionar asumiendo grandes riesgos y, por lo tanto, recibiendo claras contras.
Por lo tanto, aunque el exretador mundial Moreno tiró buenos jabs y sacó algunas astutas contras en cruzado boxeando sin iniciativa, Noriega se estaba imponiendo antes de anotarse un brutal knockdown en el quinto round: en un cruce, un fortísimo curvo zurdo estalló contra Moreno, cayendo de espaldas al tapiz. Con enorme valentía el púgil aguantó este asalto y los siguientes, e incluso pasada la mitad pasó al ataque buscando una mano decisiva, pero la precisión, el orden y la explosividad de Noriega continuaron marcando la diferencia claramente hasta el final.

Despite a war was expected, the British boxer James “Kid Shamrock” Metcalf 23(14KO)-2(1) needed a methodical, ordered, astute performance with controlled risk to defeat the Spaniard puncher Kerman Lejarraga 34(26KO)-3(2), and this is exactly what he did. Not making this time the mistake of letting himself be carried away by his courage or exchanging too much, Metcalf fought taking advantage of his technique to clearly defeat Lejarraga. However, in his victory by unanimous decision the scores were way too close: 96-94, 96-95 and 97-94.
The visitor Metcalf wisely opted to try to move, jab and choose his attacks with one-twos or hooks against Lejarraga, who was chasing him throwing his solid jab and looking for right hands. Relying on his strength, the Briton created more clashes in which he landed hooks quite accurately, but his risks were not excessive and his successes were striking. In fact, in the third round Lejarraga fell to the mat for a right hand but without receiving count, since the referee considered that it had been a push or that the blow had been to the back of the head.
In any case, Metcalf’s jab and movement were very good and his close range boxing was not bad either with hooks and uppercuts, so the slower Lejarraga, who had much less technical resources, needed more than sporadic power shots to avoid defeat. The local added more pressure in the fourth round and connected a hard right hook and a clear straight punch, but Metcalf answered him in the fifth round with skillful hooks and sharp jabs. In addition, the British boxer made good transitions to defensive position and seemed stronger in the clinches. That way, the situation began to be more and more compromised for Lejarraga.
Due to his tenacity and determination, the “Revólver” continued to advance and look for a crucial power punch, but Metcalf used well the moments with distance through his jab and his one-twos, made useful dodges and in close range landed good hands, all this without being surprised by his rival’s hooks. So, although Lejarraga, despite being tired and having a swollen face, tried to work with his hooks until the end, Metcalf used his tactics efficiently to end up securing the deserved victory.
Having defeated the 4th WBA super welterweight, Metcalf will receive a very good ranking and will access to a great bout on the British or the international scene. In any case, the most positive thing for his career is that this time in the ring he solved his past errors and that, although he did not entertain as much as usual or as expected, he offered perhaps his most disciplined and intelligent performance as a visitor, now looking to the future with renewed optimism.
Noriega new Europen champion
The co-main event ended with the coronation of a new European flyweight champion, Jairo Noriega 11(3KO)-0, who also showed his remarkable projection by knocking down twice and beating by wide unanimous decision the resistant former world challenger Ángel Moreno 21(6KO)-4-3. The scorecards were double 118-109 and one 116-110.
In the first round a counter left hook from Noriega rocked Moreno, who was then dropped to the mat by a right hook. However, the fight did not end there, as in the second round Moreno returned to the attack with his wide hooks, generating dangerous exchanges. In them, Noriega took the initiative and connected good straight-hook combinations, but eventually Moreno tried to press again by taking big risks and, therefore, received clear counters.
So, while former world title challenger Moreno threw good jabs and landed some slick counters boxing without initiative, Noriega was winning the fight before scoring a brutal fifth-round knockdown: in an exchange, a huge left hook exploded against Moreno, who was dropped hard to the canvas. With great courage, the fighter endured this round and the following ones, and after the mid point he even went on the attack looking for a decisive hand, but Noriega’s precision, order and explosiveness continued to clearly make the difference until the end.
