David Benavídez vapuleó terriblemente a David Lemieux para lograr victoria por KOT y título interino WBC

Que el estadounidense David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez 26(23KO)-0 se enfrentase a un adversario sin posibilidades de ganar como David Lemieux 43(36KO)-5(3) fue culpa exclusivamente del WBC, que ordenó este combate por tener ranqueado como 2º incomprensiblemente al canadiense. Esta pésima decisión privó a los espectadores de ver a Benavídez ante un oponente a su altura, o al menos uno que no terminase terriblemente vapuleado durante tres asaltos.
En el comienzo Lemieux intentó presionar contra las cuerdas a su oponente y lanzarle fuertes ganchos, pero un tranquilo Benavídez se resituó rápido en el centro del ring y fue tanteando a su rival. Una vez que Benavídez empezó a atacar a su rival con un par de directos, éste empezó a ceder, siendo Lemieux posteriormente dañado y desestabilizado por un potente cruzado zurdo. Entonces fue llevado a una esquina, donde recibió una abrumadora serie de hooks y uppercuts que le dejaron roto y sin respuesta, aunque el árbitro absurdamente se negó a parar el combate.
Estando muy afectado, en el segundo episodio Lemieux cayó al tapiz por un directo de mano adelantada precedido por un duro derechazo, pero tampoco terminó ahí la contienda, sino que el excampeón siguió siendo golpeado brutalmente en una pelea que no tenía ningún sentido sobre el papel y que en ese momento ya era completamente esperpéntica. Con todo, el tercer hombre no detuvo entonces el combate, ni siquiera en el descanso antes del tercer round, sino que permitió que la pelea continuase hasta que finalmente decretó el KOT cuando el ensangrentado Lemieux fue desequilibrado por una dura combinación de ganchos al rostro.
La posesión del título WBC interino del peso supermedio supone que Benavídez es ahora retador obligatorio de Canelo, aunque que el combate se materialice pronto dependerá de que el Consejo quiera ejercer algo de presión para que se lleve a cabo, algo improbable. Por lo demás, a Benavídez sólo le queda esperar que PBC, empresa de la que forma parte, le consiga una pelea ante un compañero de escuadra destacado como Caleb Plant o Jermall Charlo.

That the American David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez 26(23KO)-0 faced an opponent with no chance of winning like David Lemieux 43(36KO)-5(3) was the exclusive fault of the WBC, which ordered this fight for incomprehensibly having ranked as 2nd the Canadian. This lousy decision prevented the viewers of seeing Benavidez face an opponent who could match him, or at least one who didn’t get terribly beaten for three rounds.
At the beginning Lemieux tried to press his opponent against the ropes and throw strong hooks, but a calm Benavídez quickly repositioned himself in the center of the ring and tested his rival. Once Benavídez began to attack with a couple of straight punches, his rival began to have problems, and shortly later Lemieux was hurt and staggered by a powerful left hook. He ended into a corner, where he received overwhelming combinations of hooks and uppercuts that severely punished him and left him without answer, although the referee absurdly refused to stop the fight.
Very hurt, in the second round Lemieux fell to the mat due to a jab preceded by a hard right hand, but the contest did not end there either, but the former champion continued to be brutally beaten in a fight that made no sense on paper and that was getting completely grotesque. Still, the third man didn’t stop the fight then, not even at the break before the third round, but instead allowed the bout to continue until a bloodied Lemieux was thrown off balance by another hard combination of hooks to the face.
The possession of the WBC interim super middleweight title means that Benavidez is now Canelo‘s mandatory challenger, although whether that fight materializes soon will depend on the Council wanting to exert some pressure to make it happen, which is unlikely. For the rest, Benavídez can only hope that PBC, company of which he is a part, gets him a fight against an important stablemate like Caleb Plant or Jermall Charlo.
