Aunque la derrota ante Shakur Stevenson no fue un gran demérito para Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring 23(11KO)-3(2), no es lo mismo perder ante este top 10 libra por libra que ante un rival como Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz 16(8KO)-0-1, prospecto con cualidades pero que entraba al duelo sin peleas ante top 15. Es por esto que Herring se vio tan desmoralizado tras el duelo, en el que Ortiz ganó por merecida decisión unánime y puntuaciones de doble 97-93 y un 96-94.
El joven Ortiz quiso sorprender desde lejos con veloces arremetidas, pero estas estuvieron mal medidas, por lo que, siendo además su rival zurdo, ambos cayeron en muchos desordenados clinches. De todos modos, entre los agarres, Ortiz encontró momentos para sacar aislados rectos que fueron los golpes más significativos del primer tercio y que no pudieron ser igualados por los astutos contragolpes de veterano que Herring sacó con su hook de mano adelantada y uppercuts de izquierda.
Con el paso de los minutos ambos manejaron la distancia algo mejor, aunque la tendencia general se mantuvo, con encontronazos mal medidos terminados con golpes entre agarres, afilados rectos de Ortiz en la distancia media-larga y menos determinantes contras de Herring en media-corta. El planteamiento de la pelea estaba llevando hacia la derrota a Herring que, mucho menos activo de manos y piernas que “The Technician”, no conseguía compensar tampoco por precisión el despliegue de su oponente.
Por ello, entre saltos con las manos bajas a distancia, Ortiz siguió llegando hasta el final con aislados directos o breves combinaciones de hooks que superaron los escasos jabs y curvos del excampeón mundial, que no logró tampoco un punto de inflexión en los intercambios en corta de los últimos rounds.
La carrera de Herring está en una situación muy comprometida, en la que está perdiendo rendimiento a la vez que ha ascendido a un peso ligero en el que parece muy difícil que pueda lograr grandes éxitos, así que resultó normal que el boxeador dejase en al aire tras el combate la posibilidad del retiro. En cuanto a Ortiz, la división está llena de boxeadores jóvenes con mayor nivel, fama o proyección que él, así que no lo tendrá nada fácil, pero está claro que al peso ligero tampoco le vendrá mal tener en la parte alta a otro púgil con virtudes y aspiraciones que pueda generar peleas interesantes.

La emisión de la cartelera principal del Alimkhanuly-Dignum se inició con una nueva victoria del olímpico estadounidense Delante “Tiger” Johnson 4(3KO)-0. Este prometedor peso superligero derrotó por KOT en el tercer asalto al argentino Agustín Kucharski 8(3KO)-5-1, que el año pasado tuvo un par de actuaciones muy meritorias (terminadas en controvertidas derrotas) como visitante en Polonia.
Kucharski se mantuvo móvil intentando mantenerse alejado de los golpes de su rival antes de buscar acortar repentinamente los espacios en ataques con sus hooks, pero Johnson no se dejó sorprender y en líneas generales impuso su jab, sus ganchos zurdos y su derecha recta al ataque o a la contra. Pronto Kucharski presentó enrojecimientos en el rostro y una pequeña herida bajo el ojo derecho, aunque lo peor en la pugna para él llegaría algo más tarde. En el tercer asalto, el hábil Johnson, que había calibrado ya totalmente su distancia y su puntería, asestó una derecha a la contra que derribó a su oponente, cayendo Kucharski en la reanudación nuevamente por otro directo a la contra bien medido. Entonces, antes de que el boxeador se pusiese en pie tambaleante, voló la toalla desde la esquina de Kucharski.

Although the defeat against Shakur Stevenson was not a great demerit for Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring 23(11KO)-3(2), it is not the same to lose to a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter than to be beaten by a rival like Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz 16(8KO)-0-1, prospect with qualities but who entered the duel without a single fight against a top 15. It was for that reason that Herring looked so demoralized after the duel, in which Ortiz won a deserved unanimous decision with scores of double 97-93 and one 96-94.
The young Ortiz wanted to surprise from long distance with fast attacks, but these were inadequately measured, so both had many messy clinches. Still, between the holds, Ortiz found moments to land isolated straight punches that were the most significant strikes of the first third and that could not be matched by the astute counterpunches from the veteran Herring with lead hooks and left uppercuts.
As the minutes went by, both handled the distance somewhat better, although the general trend continued, with charges ending with punches between clinches, sharp straights from Ortiz in the mid-long distance and less decisive counters from Herring in the mid-close distance. In this situation, Herring was heading towards defeat, since he was much less active with his hands and legs than «The Technician» and was unable to compensate his opponent’s attacks through precision.
Therefore, between jumps with his hands low from long distance, Ortiz continued connecting till the end straight punches or brief combinations of hooks that surpassed the few jabs and hooks of the former world champion, who did not achieve a turning point either in the exchanges of the last rounds.
Herring’s career is in a very compromised situation, in which he is losing level at the same time that he has moved up to a lightweight division in which seems very difficult for him to achieve great success, so it was normal for the boxer to leave in the air the possibility of retirement after the fight. As for Ortiz, the division is full of young boxers with more level, fame or projection, so it will not be easy for him, but it is good for lightweight to have another fighter with virtues and aspirations that can generate interesting bouts.
Tiger Johnson got TKO victory

Kucharski soon had his face reddened and a small wound under his right eye, although the worst of the fight for him would come a little later. In the third round, the skillful Johnson, who had fully measured his distance and adjusted his aim, landed a counter right hand that dropped his opponent. Kucharski went down again at the restart due to another well-timed straight counter. Then, before the boxer got to his feet and staggered, the towel came in from Kucharski’s corner.
