Gervonta Davis aprovechó las brechas de Rolando Romero para derrotarle por KOT

Mientras sus rivales sólo se replegaron amedrentados sin contestar o carecieron de la pegada como para hacerle pagar sus errores, el estadounidense Rolando “Rolly” Romero 14(12KO)-1(1) consiguió una racha de victorias que le valió a PBC para inflar su nivel y para confundir a muchos analistas, que increíblemente pensaban que estaba en posición de noquear al hábil y potente Gervonta “Tank” Davis 27(25KO)-0. Sin embargo, Davis sólo tuvo que esperar tranquilamente su oportunidad para sentenciar el duelo hasta que esta se presentó en el sexto episodio.
Davis decidió guardar energías y desplazarse esperando que el agresivo y descontrolado Romero se cansase fallando golpes o que cayese en alguna contra determinante. Así, durante el primer tercio “Tank” se contentó con sacar unos pocos precisos directos zurdos a la vez que de vez en cuando tenía que lidiar con una desordenada embestida de Romero, que llegó con algún directo diestro y que con ellos hizo pensar a algunos expertos que el combate iba a ser largo y reñido en lugar de la tranquila preparación de una trampa por parte de Davis para cazar a su contrincate.
No obstante, Davis, que casi siempre saca lo mejor de su boxeo hacia la mitad, iba cada vez ajustando mejor su timing y conectando con más frecuencia su jab y sus izquierdas a la contra a pesar de que en el quinto round hizo un gesto de dolor al fallar un golpe con su puño zurdo. Por su parte, Romero cada vez iba mostrando más veces los errores que siempre pareció que iban a ser su perdición cuando se midiese a un rival del nivel alto: arremetidas frontales, con la guardia abierta y con el mentón alto.
Finalmente, en una de estas ofensivas absurdas y con todos los ingredientes para acabar mal para Romero, Davis impactó un brutal y certero gancho zurdo a la contra que estalló contra “Rolly”, que cayó al tapiz aparatosamente. El boxeador se levantó, pero ante la petición del árbitro de que diese pasos hacia el lado, Romero casi no pudo responder y sus piernas temblaban inestables, por lo que el tercer hombre detuvo el combate.
Durante las semanas previas Davis ha explicado que su deseo es enfrentarse a continuación a Devin Haney, dando por hecho que éste vencerá a George Kambosos en el combate por la corona indiscutida. Quizás, en otro momento un eventual choque Davis-Haney habría sido muy difícil de acordar, pero ahora que Davis ya no tiene contrato con Mayweather Promotions y que Haney tiene libertad promocional (incluso va a participar en un evento de ESPN), se podría llegar a encontrar una solución para pactar el interesante duelo entre los estadounidenses si es que Kambosos no trastoca sus planes.

While his rivals only retreated in fear without answering or lacked the punch to make him pay for his mistakes, the American Rolando “Rolly” Romero 14(12KO)-1(1) got a winning streak that served PBC to create some hype and to confuse many analysts, who incredibly thought he was in position to knock out the skilled and powerful Gervonta “Tank” Davis 27(25KO)-0. However, Davis only had to calmly wait for his opportunity to close the duel until it appeared in the sixth round.
Davis decided to save energy and move around expecting that the aggressive and uncontrolled Romero would get tired missing blows or that he would fall in some decisive counter. Thus, during the first third “Tank” just threw a few precise left hands while from time to time he had to deal with a messy charge from Romero, who landed some right hands which made some experts think that the fight was going to be long and close rather than Davis’s calm preparation of a trap to hunt down his opponent.
However, Davis, who almost always shows the best of his boxing in the second half, was adjusting better and better his timing and connecting his jab and counter straight punches more often despite the fact that in the fifth round he made a gesture of pain when missing a punch with his left hand. For his part, Romero was showing more and more times the mistakes that always seemed that will be his downfall when facing a top opponent: frontal attacks, with his guard open and with his chin high.
Finally, in one of these absurd offensives with all the ingredients to end badly for Romero, Davis landed a brutal and accurate left hook on the counter that exploded against “Rolly”, who fell spectacularly to the mat. The boxer got up, but at the referee’s request to give steps to the side, Romero could hardly respond and his legs were shaking unsteadily, so the third man stopped the fight.
During the previous weeks, Davis has explained that his desire is to face Devin Haney next, assuming that he will beat George Kambosos in the fight for the undisputed crown. Perhaps, at another time, an eventual Davis-Haney clash would have been very difficult to make, but now that Davis no longer has a contract with Mayweather Promotions and that Haney is a free agent (he will even participate in an ESPN event), it could be possible for them to find a solution to materialize that interesting duel if Kambosos does not disrupt their plans.
