En agosto de 2019, el joven peso gallo Saúl “The Beast” Sánchez 18(11KO)-2 sufrió un primer revés profesional del que supo recuperarse con una buena cadena de triunfos. Como parte de ella, Sánchez logró noquear en el primer asalto al prospecto Jarico O’Quinn, logrando posicionarse como 5º WBO y 8º WBA y, por lo tanto, cerca de una pugna crucial. Pese a ello, anoche, en el combate estelar de una velada de Thompson Boxing, Eros Correa 12(9KO)-1 dio la sorpresa derrotándolo por decisión dividida y frenando sus planes inmediatos. Las cartulinas de los jueces fueron de 98-92 y 97-93 para Correa y un 94-96 para Sánchez.
Muy pronto en el combate “The Beast” Sánchez intentó poner a prueba la resistencia de su oponente, tirando fuertes ganchos de ambas manos arriba y abajo, uno-dos, uno-dos-hook, etc. Con todo, aunque inicialmente Sánchez ganó rounds por su superior frecuencia ofensiva, a diferencia de otros rivales recientes de éste, Correa encajó bien los golpes y se mantuvo ordenado. Es más, con el paso de los minutos Correa empezó a evitar una buena cantidad de manos, a usar mejor su juego de piernas y a anticiparse con su jab, con variados puños aislados o con breves combinaciones, haciendo las cosas cada vez más complicadas a su oponente.
Ciertamente, aunque empezó a recibir golpes nítidos, a ver frenado su avance y a no poder golpear tanto parando los pies, perdiendo asaltos consecutivos, Sánchez llegó con ganchos de mano adelantada y con tensos jabs que a menudo eran más llamativos que los golpes de su oponente. Además, cuando hacia el último tercio Correa pareció disminuir su actividad Sánchez volvió a atacar con bastante agresividad. Sin embargo, el favorito siguió teniendo dificultades determinantes no sólo para encerrar a su oponente o para conectar sus manos, sino también para evitar que se mantuviese o expandiese la ventaja en las cartulinas de Correa, que se estaba mostrando muy eficaz y que sabía controlar muy bien los tiempos.
Por ello, finalmente, no consiguiendo Sánchez encontrar la manera de prolongar sus ofensivas ni una mano determinante, Correa siguió usando sus entradas y salidas entre desplazamientos y sus contraataques para, a través de cortas, rápidas y astutas combinaciones o escogidos puños, lograr la victoria.
Este será un importante paso atrás para Sánchez ahora que estaba cerca de aspirar a alcanzar por lo menos una eliminatoria, si bien sólo tiene 25 años y podría volver a recuperar su posición en no mucho tiempo, especialmente si aplica necesarias mejoras. Por su parte, Correa logró el mayor triunfo de su carrera a la vez que se alejó de su derrota por decisión mayoritaria ante Akitsugi, todo ello a la vez que podría aparecer en las listas y lograr en adelante mayor apoyo promocional. Sin embargo, lo más importante es que, con poco más de una decena de combates, Correa mostró un buen y maduro boxeo que le sirvió para aguantar los envites iniciales de un peligroso pegador y lograr remontar.

In August 2019, the young bantamweight Saúl “The Beast” Sánchez 18(11KO)-2 suffered a first professional setback from which he was able to recover with a good string of wins. As part of it, Sánchez beat the prospect Jarico O’Quinn in the first round, managing to position himself as 5th WBO and 8th WBA and, therefore, close to a crucial fight. Despite this, last night, in the main event of an evening of Thompson Boxing, Eros Correa 12(9KO)-1 scored an upset win by split decision that stopped Sánchez’s immediate plans. The judges’ scorecards were 98-92 and 97-93 for Correa and 94-96 for Sánchez.
Very early in the match “The Beast” Sanchez tried to test his opponent’s resistance, throwing hard hooks from both hands up and down, one-twos, one-two-hook combinations, etc. However, although Sánchez initially won rounds due to his superior frequency of attacks, unlike some of his recent rivals, Correa took the shots well and remained composed. Moreover, as the minutes passed, Correa began to avoid a good number of hands, to use his footwork better and to land his jab, varied isolated punches or brief combinations, making things increasingly complicated for his opponent.
Certainly, although he started to receive clean shots, his progress slowed and wasn’t able to land many hands at close range, losing consecutive rounds, Sanchez connected lead hooks and tense jabs that were often more striking than his rival’s punches. Furthermore, when toward the last third of the fight Correa seemed to decrease his activity, Sánchez attacked again quite aggressively. Nevertheless, the favorite continued to have decisive difficulties not only to corner his opponent or to connect his hands, but also to prevent Correa’s margin in the scores from being maintained or expanded, as the latter was being very effective and had a very good timing.
For this reason, finally, with Sánchez unable to find a way to prolong his offensives or to connect a decisive hand, Correa kept using his going in and out between lateral movements and his counterattacks to, through short, quick and cunning combinations or chosen hands, achieve victory.
This will be an important step backwards for Sánchez now that he was close to reach at least an eliminator, although he is only 25 years old and could regain his position soon, especially if he implements necessary improvements. For his part, Correa achieved the biggest win of his career at the same time he put distance from his majority decision loss to Akitsugi. Also, he could appear on the rankings and get more promotional support in the future. However, the most important thing is that, with little more than a dozen fights, Correa showed a good boxing that helped him withstand the initial attacks of a dangerous puncher and manage to come back.
