El doble oro olímpico Robeisy Ramírez noqueó al invicto Abraham Nova para catapultarse en los rankings del peso pluma

El plan de Top Rank es que en el futuro Shakur Stevenson y el doble oro olímpico cubano Robeisy Ramírez 10(6KO)-1 se enfrenten en un mayúsculo duelo que sirva de revancha de la muy polémica final de los Juegos Olímpicos de Río (en la que perdió Stevenson). No obstante, para que ese choque tenga el calibre necesario en el boxeo profesional, la idea es que Ramírez logre al menos un cinturón mundial en el peso pluma, objetivo al que se acercó en el semifondo del Beterbiev-Smith noqueando al invicto puertorriqueño-estadounidense Abraham “El Súper” Nova 21(15KO)-1(1).
Un planteamiento táctico y en la distancia larga podría haber sido muy útil para Ramírez, que de esa manera habría podido buscar un golpe crucial reduciendo riesgos, pero contrariamente decidió combatir como un boxeador de presión, aunque avanzando sobre su oponente bastante frontal y con pasos poco veloces. Por ello, inicialmente Nova pudo moverse, sacar rápidos y frecuentes jabs y alguna derecha recta para contestar el avance de su oponente, que impactó alguna buena izquierda pero que recibió golpes innecesarios debido a su estrategia simplista.
De todos modos, aunque Nova es un buen boxeador, no es un gran competidor por sus inconsistencias, así que en el tercer round decidió renunciar al tipo de combate que le estaba dando éxitos para buscar una pelea más física en el centro del ring. Esta decisión creó un escenario favorable para un Ramírez que estaba peleando agresivo y que entonces pudo conectar duros golpes de poder zurdos que dañaron un tanto al puertorriqueño.
Nova empezó a oscilar entre un boxeo en larga que le daba resultados, pero que se sustentaba básicamente en jabs veloces pero tenues, y momentos en la distancia media y media-corta en los que paraba los pies y le daba la oportunidad a Ramírez de capturar los rounds con fuertes izquierdazos rectos, cruzados, uppercuts, etc. Además, con el paso de los minutos, los peligrosos puños que el cubano estaba conectando le permitían cada vez calibrar mejor su timing y su distancia, hasta que encontró la ocasión para concluir el choque en el quinto round: tras evitar un jab rival de un Nova estático, Ramírez avanzó sobre un cruzado diestro sucedido por un izquierdazo que estalló contra su oponente y lo dejó tendido en la lona sin posibilidad de continuar.
Dado que Nova era 4º WBO y, por lo tanto rival directo del 12º Ramírez, y que en el enfrentamiento estuvo en juego un cinturón menor de dicho organismo, el medallista olímpico debería escalar con mucha fuerza hacia el top 5. Con todo, aunque también avanzará en las listas WBC y WBA y podría aparecer en la IBF, el hecho es que seguramente su promotora querrá que Ramírez expanda un poco más su experiencia antes de llevarle al mundial, no siendo descartable que se mida al ganador de la eliminatoria semifinal entre Joet González e Isaac Dogboe.

Top Rank’s plan is that in the future Shakur Stevenson and the two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramírez 10(6KO)-1 will face each other in a major fight that will serve as revenge for the very controversial final of the Rio Olympics (in which Stevenson lost). However, for this clash to be big enough in professional boxing, the idea is for Ramírez to conquer at least one world belt at featherweight, an objective to which he got closer in the Beterbiev-Smith co-feature knocking out the undefeated Abraham “El Super” Nova 21(15KO)-1(1).
A tactical approach from long range could have been very useful for Ramírez, who in this way could have sought a crucial punch while reducing the risks, but instead he decided to box like a pressure fighter, although advancing on his rival quite frontal and without quick steps. So, Nova was initially able to move, throw fast and frequent jabs and some straight right hands to counter his opponent. Ramírez landed some good left hands but took unnecessary hits due to his simplistic strategy.
Anyway, despite Nova is a good boxer, he is not a great competitor due to his inconsistencies, so in the third round he decided to renounce to the type of fight that was giving him success to look for a more physical duel in the center of the ring. This decision created a favorable scenario for Ramírez, who was fighting aggressively and then was able to land hard left hands that hurt the Puerto Rican somewhat.
Nova began to oscillate between a long-range boxing that gave him results, but was basically based on fast but tenuous jabs, and moments in the mid or mid-close distance in which he stopped his feet and gave Ramírez the opportunity to capture the rounds with clear straight lefts, hooks and uppercuts. In addition, as minutes went by, the dangerous punches that the Cuban was connecting allowed him to better calibrate his timing and distance, until he found the opportunity to end the clash in the fifth round: after avoiding a jab from a static Nova, Ramírez advanced with a right hook succeeded by a straight left that hit his opponent hard and put him lying on the canvas with no chance to continue.
Given that Nova was 4th WBO and, therefore, a direct rival in the rankings for the 12th Ramírez, and that in the bout a minor belt of that organization was at stake, the Olympic medalist should climb now towards the top 5. All in all, although he will also improve his position in the WBC and WBA lists and could appear in the IBF ranking, the fact is that his promoter will surely want Ramírez to expand his experience a little more before fighting in a world championship. In this sense, it should not ruled out the possibility that Ramírez could face the winner of the seminal eliminator between his stablemates Joet González and Isaac Dogboe.
