Después de aplastar a su oposición durante su etapa como prospecto en desarrollo, el estadounidense Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 15(10KO)-0 disputó el pasado febrero su primera pelea en la cumbre del peso supermosca ante el excampeón mundial “Príncipe” Cuadras. Como se esperaba, en dicho enfrentamiento Rodríguez estuvo más que a la altura de las circunstancias, logrando una convincente victoria, motivo por el que se ha decidido que, sólo cuatro meses más tarde, afronte una prueba de fuego aún mayor que demostrará si definitivamente despunta como uno de los grandes nombres de las divisiones más ligeras.
Este sábado, en el combate estelar de una buena velada de Matchroom/DAZN desde el Tech Port Arena de San Antonio, Estados Unidos, Rodríguez se medirá al fortísimo exmonarca mundial tailandés Wisaksil Wangek 50(43KO)-5(2)-1, a menudo llamado por su apodo Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. Este púgil logró cerrar la pasada década como uno de los mejores peso supermosca gracias a sus dos victorias consecutivas ante Román “Chocolatito” González encadenadas con un triunfo sobre Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada.
De todos modos, aunque logró hitos a la altura de un miembro del Salón de la Fama, tras alcanzar la cima Wangek comenzó a diluirse: problemas personales que desembocaron en una depresión, una derrota en revancha ante Estrada, una larga inactividad, una visible pérdida de rendimiento, etc. Así, aunque Wangek sigue siendo un boxeador de la parte alta de la división por sus logros pasados y su potencia, el hecho es que desde su tropiezo ante “El Gallo” (abril de 2019) sólo ha sumado dos triunfos ante rivales sencillos y una trabajada victoria ante un Amnat Ruenroeg al borde del retiro, no habiéndose subido al ring en 15 meses.
Por lo tanto, aunque todavía hay preguntas que contestar respecto al boxeo de Rodríguez, como por ejemplo cuál sería su gestión táctica cuando pase por dificultades, el hecho es que todos los elementos parecen favorecerle: es mucho más joven, está más rodado, menos castigado, tiene más alcance, velocidad y moral, etc. Por si todo esto fuese poco, “Bam” ha mostrado que es más que un peligroso pegador, puesto que es capaz de boxear con notable habilidad y con detalles de verdadera calidad, así que es lógico considerarle favorito a pesar de que tiene una enorme desventaja en experiencia.
Dicho esto, el combate podría no ser sencillo para Rodríguez si Wangek utiliza su mejor versión. Si el tailandés lograse crear una pelea física quizás podría intentar imponer su fuerza y su excelente gancho diestro ante un púgil que por el momento no se ha medido a un pegador ni remotamente cercano en nivel a Wangek.
No obstante, da la sensación de que si Rodríguez hace valer su explosividad, rapidez y cadencia desde la distancia larga y media podría marcar la diferencia a su favor, mientras que en intensos intercambios en corta su valentía, precisión y destreza no le harían quedarse por detrás. Así, aunque Wangek podría tener una opción de victoria si lograse recuperar la ambición y la determinación que tuvo en el pasado, todo parece apuntar a que más bien Rodríguez podría continuar trazando un cambio generacional en la división y acercarse a una pugna de aún mayor calibre hacia finales de año.
McCaskill expone ante Ibarra
En este evento, que contará con dos buenos mundiales que serán tratados en otra previa separada, también participará la campeona indiscutida (WBA, WBC, IBF y WBO) del peso wélter Jessica McCaskill 11(4KO)-2, que tratará de defender sus cuatro cinturones ante la mexicana Alma Ibarra 10(5KO)-1. La intención de la promotora con el matchmaking de este combate es evidente, ya que la púgil de la escuadra McCaskill viene de vapulear y derrotar por KOT a una Kandi Wyatt a la que Ibarra sólo pudo vencer por decisión unos meses antes.
En cualquier caso, y aunque la estadounidense posee todos los títulos (en parte debido a decisiones controvertidas), McCaskill está lejos de ser una boxeadora sin brechas, avanzando frontal y rígida sacando golpes desordenados que a menudo desembocan en recurrentes clinches. Por ello, midiéndose a una Ibarra brava y fuerte, es posible que el duelo pueda tener habituales intercambios en el centro del ring y un desarrollo igualado. Con todo, teniendo en cuenta que “CasKILLA” es muy voluntariosa, que ha recibido el beneficio de la duda en varias peleas igualadas y que ha derrotado a púgiles de mayor nivel que Ibarra, en principio la campeona partirá como favorita.
El evento que contará con estos dos duelos, más el Akhmadaliev-Ríos y el Martínez-Arroyo II, será emitido por DAZN desde las 2:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en España, las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT.

After crushing his opposition during his time as a prospect, the American Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 15(10KO)-0 had his first fight at the top of the super flyweight division last February against former world champion “Príncipe” Cuadras. As expected, in said bout Rodríguez was more than up to the challenge, achieving a convincing victory, which is why, only four months later, he will face an even greater test, one that will show if he definitely stands out as one of the big names in the lighter divisions.
This Saturday, in the main event of Matchroom/DAZN evening from the Tech Port Arena in San Antonio, United States, Rodríguez will face the Thai, former world champion, Wisaksil Wangek 50(43KO)-5(2)-1, often called by his nickname Srisaket Sor Rungvisai. This fighter managed to close the last decade as one of the best super flyweights thanks to his two consecutive victories against Román «Chocolatito» González chained with a triumph over Juan Francisco «El Gallo» Estrada.
Still, although he achieved successes worthy of a Hall of Famer, after reaching his peak Wangek began to fade: he suffered personal problems that led to a depression, a rematch loss to Estrada, a long inactivity, a visible loss of level, etc. Thus, although Wangek continues to be a top boxer in the division due to his past achievements and his power, the fact is that since his setback against “El Gallo” (April 2019) he has only added to his record two wins against easy rivals and a hard-fought victory against a boxer on the verge of retirement as Amnat Ruenroeg. Also, Wangek has not stepped into the ring in 15 months.
Therefore, although there are still questions to answer regarding Rodríguez’s boxing, such as what would be his tactical management when he goes through difficulties, the fact is he has all kind of advantages: he is much younger, has more recent activity, is less punished, has more range, speed and morale, etc. As if all this were not enough, «Bam» has shown that he is more than a dangerous puncher, since he is capable of boxing with remarkable skill and with actions of true technical quality, so it is logical to consider him favorite despite the fact that he has a huge disadvantage in experience.
That said, the fight might not be easy for Rodriguez if Wangek uses his best version. If the Thai manages to create a physical fight, perhaps he could try to impose his strength and his excellent right hook against a fighter who at the moment has not yet met a puncher even remotely close in level to Wangek.
However, it seems that if Rodríguez uses his explosiveness, quickness and punching rate from long and mid range, it could make the difference in his favor, while in intense exchanges at close range his precision and skill would put him in a favorable position. Thus, although Wangek could have a chance of victory if he were able to recover the ambition and determination he had in the past, everything seems to indicate that Rodríguez could continue the generational change in the division and approach an even bigger fight towards the end of the year.
McCaskill defends against Ibarra
In this card (which will have two other world championships that will be part of another preview) will participate the undisputed welterweight champion (WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO) Jessica McCaskill 11(4KO)-2, who will try to defend her four belts against the Mexican Alma Ibarra 10(5KO)-1. Matchroom Boxing’s intention with the matchmaking for this fight is evident, since McCaskill, the boxer from its stable, comes from overwhelming and defeating by TKO Kandi Wyatt, whom Ibarra could only beat by decision a few months before.
In any case, and although the American owns all the titles (in part due to controversial decisions), McCaskill is far from a boxer without flaws, since she advances throwing crude shots that often lead to recurring clinches. Therefore, facing a brave and strong fighter as Ibarra, it is possible that the duel could be contested and have frequent exchanges in the center of the ring. All in all, considering that “CasKILLA” is very aggressive, that she has received the favorable verdict in several close bouts and that she has defeated fighters of a higher level than Ibarra, in principle the champion will be the favorite to win.
The event that will feature these two duels, plus the matches Akhmadaliev-Ríos and Martínez-Arroyo II, will be broadcast on DAZN this Saturday from 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT, 1:00 a.m. in the UK.
