En octubre de 2021 el puertorriqueño Jonathan “Bomba” González 25(14KO)-3(3)-1 y el mexicano Elwin “Pulga” Soto 19(13KO)-2 se vieron las caras en un interesante campeonato mundial del que salió coronado el primero. Desde entonces estos dos boxeadores no han vuelto a subirse a un ring, algo que, curiosamente, cambiará para ambos en este fin de semana: González expondrá su corona WBO del peso minimosca el viernes ante el olímpico filipino Mark Anthony Barriga 11(2KO)-1, mientras que Soto disputará una eliminatoria WBC de la misma categoría el sábado ante el excampeón mundial sudafricano Hekkie Budler 33(10KO)-4(1).
Primera defensa
Respecto al González-Barriga, este encabezará un evento desde el Osceola Heritage Park de Kissimme, Estados Unidos. A la pelea González accederá como favorito no sólo por llegar de su crucial triunfo ante Soto, sino debido a que Barriga no tiene el tipo de boxeo que normalmente ha puesto en apuros al boricua. Los púgiles que han derrotado a González han sido pegadores agresivos que han logrado presionar con eficacia y arrastrar a peleas físicas a este boxeador técnico. Sin embargo, Barriga es un púgil de estilo táctico, con un ritmo muy contenido, que pelea muy relajado y que lanza sus acciones ofensivas sin gran potencia.
Por lo tanto, es de suponer que la pelea debería ser un choque de habilidad y astucia en el que un González con gran ventaja en pegada y experiencia debería poder marcar la diferencia a ojos de los jueces, aunque sea por estrecha y cuestionable decisión. Y es que Barriga es ágil, al igual que él zurdo y tiene buena defensa, por lo que si pelea conservadoramente no debería darle facilidades y podría generar un choque igualado. Con todo, aunque González es inconsistente y tiene brechas, posee un golpe más llamativo y variado que podría ser determinante en una decisión.
A por un nuevo mundial
En cuanto al Soto-Budler, este duelo se producirá en el Palenque del Fex en Mexicali, México, siendo el favorito el boxeador local. Esto es debido a motivos totalmente opuestos a los del González-Barriga, dado que Soto y Budler son dos boxeadores muy aguerridos, que buscan la batalla en la distancia corta y que a menudo se ven inmersos en peleas de desgaste de alta intensidad. Por ello, enfrentándose un Soto fortísimo, joven, con buena pegada y ansioso por desquitarse de su última derrota a un Budler veterano, muy castigado (la mayoría de sus combates han sido guerras) y que sólo ha realizado un rodaje desde que fue batido por KOT a manos de Kyoguchi (diciembre de 2018), es inevitable que el primero sea favorito.
El sudafricano siempre intenta dar todo lo que tiene y seguramente combatirá una vez más con enorme esfuerzo y valentía, pero es de suponer que un Soto más fresco conseguirá hacer valer sus golpes de poder para ganar la eliminatoria.
La cartelera del González-Barriga será emitida el viernes por la app de ProBox Tv desde aproximadamente las 19:30 ET/16:30 PT, la 1:30 de la madrugada en España, mientras que el evento Soto-Budler será televisado el sábado por Tv Azteca, ESPN+ y ESPN Knockout desde aproximadamente las 21:00 ET/18:00 PT, las 3:00 de la madrugada en hora española.

In October 2021, the Puerto Rican Jonathan “Bomba” González 25(14KO)-3(3)-1 and the Mexican Elwin “Pulga” Soto 19(13KO)-2 faced each other in an interesting world championship in which the latter was crowned champion. Since then these two boxers have not been back in a ring, something that, curiously, will change for both in this weekend: González will defend his WBO light flyweight crown on Friday against the Filipino Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga 11(2KO)-1, while Soto will fight in a WBC eliminator in that same division on Saturday against South African former world champion Hekkie Budler 33(10KO)-4(1).
First defense
The bout González-Barriga will headline an event from the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimme, United States. González will enter the fight as the favorite not only because he is coming from his crucial victory over Soto, but also because Barriga does not have the type of boxing that has normally put the Puerto Rican in trouble. The fighters who have defeated Gonzalez have been aggressive punchers who have pressured effectively and dragged him into physical fights. However, Barriga is a boxer with a tactical style and low rhythm who fights very relaxed and who throws his offensive actions without great power.
Therefore, the fight should be a clash of skill and cunning in which González, who has advantage in power and experience, should be able to make the difference, even if it is just by a narrow and questionable decision. Barriga is agile, southpaw (like González) and has good defense, so if he fights conservatively he should make a difficult bout for the champion. Still, while Gonzalez is inconsistent and has flaws, he is flashier in his attacks and has more variety of punches, something that could be decisive in a decision of the judges.
A fight for accessing a world championship
As for the clash Soto-Budler, it will take place at the Palenque del Fex in Mexicali, Mexico, with the local boxer being the favorite. This is due to completely opposite reasons to those of the fight González-Barriga, since Soto and Budler are two very agressive boxers, who seek to battle in short distance and who are often in high-intensity attrition fights. For this reason, as Soto is a very strong, young fighter with a good punch and eager to bounce back from his last defeat and will battle against a veteran as Budler, a very punished (most of his fights have been wars) boxer who has only had one tune-up since he was beaten by TKO by Kyoguchi (December 2018), it is inevitable that the former will be the favorite.
The South African always tries to give everything he has in the ring and will surely fight once again with enormous effort and courage, but it is to be assumed that the fresher Soto will be able to make use of his power shots to win the eliminator.
The González-Barriga card will be broadcasted on Friday on the ProBox TV app from approximately 19:30 ET/16:30 PT, 0:30 a.m. in the UK, while the Soto-Budler event will be televised on Saturday on Tv Azteca, ESPN+ and ESPN Knockout from approximately 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT, 2:00 a.m. in UK time.
