El invicto Erik Bazinyan tuvo que trabajar duro para vencer a Marcelo Cóceres

En la noche del jueves, el peso supermedio armenio-canadiense Erik Bazinyan 28(21KO)-0 logró cumplir su objetivo y se anotó su mayor victoria hasta la fecha superando al exaspirante mundial argentino Marcelo “El Terrible” Cóceres 30(16KO)-4(1)-1. No obstante, y aunque los jueces dieron corruptas cartulinas de 100-90 y doble 98-92 para la victoria unánime del local, realmente Bazinyan tuvo que aplicarse muy a fondo para lograr lo que pareció un triunfo por la mínima.
Durante la primera mitad no pareció que Bazinyan fuese a padecer tantas dificultades para lograr salir con el brazo en alto, puesto que tomó la iniciativa, tiró su jab, su uno-dos y derechas rectas aisladas arriba o abajo que, además de resultar precisas, tuvieron una buena frecuencia. Por otra parte, cuando desde el tercer asalto Cóceres intentó ajustar y trató de arrojar contraofensivas, el invicto le respondió con buenos hooks en la distancia corta y media-corta antes de volver a pasar al ataque.
De todos modos, aunque durante este tramo fueron pocos los asaltos que el argentino se pudo anotar, en la segunda mitad la tendencia cambió a favor de Cóceres, que alcanzó definitivamente un punto de inflexión en el séptimo round. Entonces arrojó duros cruzados diestros y derechas rectas que dañaron a Bazinyan, quien se vio obligado a agarrarse entre desplazamientos para intentar sobrellevar los apuros.
En los siguientes episodios Cóceres presionó con decisión y anotó uppercuts de mano adelantada, derechas rectas y ganchos, así que, más que incomodar a su rival, incluso amenazó la victoria de Bazinyan, que con salteados rectos no podía equiparar o frenar el trabajo del visitante. Finalmente, Bazinyan estuvo algo más eficaz en el décimo asalto que en los episodios precedentes, pero aunque evitó nuevos apuros, la sensación una vez terminado el duelo era que su victoria había sido muy ajustada y que incluso el empate podría llegar a ser justificable.
Dicho esto, ¿cómo es posible que un juez le diese todos los asaltos a Bazinyan cuando al menos tres rounds fueron incuestionablemente dominados por Cóceres? Por otro lado, los jueces del 98-92 no hicieron en absoluto un buen trabajo, aunque comparativamente supieron camuflar algo mejor su sesgo.
En fin, Bazinyan tiene cualidades técnicas y cierto potencial, pero todavía le quedan bastantes cosas por pulir a su boxeo, haciendo evidente este combate que necesita más pugnas que le den experiencia de calidad, especialmente pudiendo entrar al top 3 WBA y al top 5 WBO en próximas actualizaciones.
En cuanto a Cóceres, éste nuevamente puso de manifiesto que es un boxeador de un muy buen nivel. Puede que algunos considerasen inicialmente que Cóceres había superado las expectativas ante Billy Joe Saunders por la grave indisciplina del británico, o que simplemente había aprovechado las brechas de un sobreconfiado Edgar Berlanga. Pero si por tercera vez el argentino salió de su país y puso en serias dificultades a un invicto, en este caso un boxeador bien preparado y con buena técnica, esto de ningún modo puede ser casualidad o un mero aprovechamiento de circunstancias favorables.

On Thursday night, Canadian-Armenian super middleweight Erik Bazinyan 28(21KO)-0 achieved his goal and scored his biggest victory to date defeating the Argentinian former world challenger Marcelo “El Terrible” Cóceres 30(16KO)-4(1)-1. However, and although the judges’ scorecards were corrupt (100-90 and double 98-92), Bazinyan really had to work till the end to achieve what seemed a narrow victory.
During the first half it did not seem that Bazinyan would have such a hard time getting out of the ring with his arm raised, since he took the initiative, threw his jab, his one-twos and isolated right hands up or down that, in addition to being precise, had a good frequency. On the other hand, when from the third round Cóceres tried to adjust and launched counteroffensives, the undefeated answered with good hooks in close and mid-close distance before attacking again.
In any case, although during this stretch there were very few rounds won by the Argentinian, in the second half the trend began to change in favor of Cóceres, who definitively reached a turning point in the seventh round. With hard right crosses Cóceres hurt Bazinyan, who was forced to clinch between movements to try to avoid more difficulties.
In the following rounds, Cóceres put pressure with determination and landed lead uppercuts, straight rights and hooks, so more than bothering his rival he threatened Bazinyan’s victory, since the local could not match the work of the visitor with his few straight punches. Ultimately, Bazinyan was somewhat more effective in the tenth round than in the preceding rounds, but although he avoided further problems, with the bout ended it seemed that his victory had been a very close one and that even a draw might be justifiable.
That said, how is it possible that a judge gave all the rounds to Bazinyan when at least three were unquestionably dominated by Cóceres? The judges responsible of the scores 98-92 did not exactly do a good job either, although comparatively they knew how to conceal their bias somewhat better.
Bazinyan has technical qualities and some potential, but he still has many things to improve in his boxing and needs more fights that could give him quality experience, especially being possible that in future updates of the rankings he could enter the top 3 WBA and the top 5 WBO.
As for Cóceres, he again showed that he is a boxer of a very good level. Perhaps some initially considered that Cóceres had exceeded expectations against Billy Joe Saunders due to the serious indiscipline of the Briton, or that he had simply taken advantage of the flaws of an overconfident Edgar Berlanga. However if for the third time the Argentinian left his country and put in serious difficulties an undefeated, in this case a boxer well prepared and with good technique, this can’t be a coincidence or a mere opportunistic success.
