En Fin de Año de 2018 el japonés Kazuto Ioka 29(15KO)-2 debería haber salido del ring con el brazo en alto. Más de tres años y medio después, Ioka enmendó lo que los jueces erraron entonces con una actuación bastante dominadora con la que derrotó por decisión unánime al excampeón mundial filipino Donnie “Ahas” Nietes 43(23KO)-2-6, que padeció su primer tropiezo desde 2004. Las cartulinas fueron de excesivo 120-108, de acertado 118-110 y un 117-111 algo generoso con Nietes.
La mejor elección táctica para Ioka habría sido crear una pelea notablemente intensa, pero contrariamente durante los tres primeros asaltos aceptó un duelo bastante pausado, táctico y calmado en el centro del ring, lo que permitió al veterano Nietes no verse demasiado agobiado y poder escoger puntuales peligrosas manos diestras, ganchos zurdos a la contra y astutos jabs. El japonés no estaba ni mucho menos regalando los rounds, sino que intentaba usar su jab de forma habitual y escoger oportunos golpes de poder, pero sus resultados en los igualados episodios iniciales no fueron tan positivos como cuando desde el cuarto asalto ajustó y empezó a añadir más presión, regularidad y agresividad a sus acciones.
Abriéndose camino con su jab hasta la distancia corta y media-corta, Ioka empezó a trabajar con frecuentes cortos rectos, uppercuts por dentro y hooks de mano adelantada arriba y abajo con los que comenzó a superar manifiestamente a un Nietes que, como ya sugirieron sus anteriores combates, ha perdido mucho rendimiento y cadencia de golpeo. Además, cuando la pugna alcanzó el sexto episodio el filipino empezó a dar muestras de cansancio, así que Ioka solo hizo que expandir su control de las acciones según fueron pasando los minutos.
Sin duda, viendo que lograba conectar precisas y amenazantes combinaciones de ganchos o series de rectos, Ioka podría haber buscado generar daños críticos con más insistencia para apuntar a un triunfo por detención, pero en gran medida prefirió no correr riesgos y fue trabajando de manera metódica y solida, siempre listo para dar un paso atrás, para anotarse claramente los asaltos sin llevar al límite la resistencia de Nietes. Este siguió caminando y encontrando huecos para ciertos afilados jabs y esporádicas buenas contras pero no estuvo cerca de igualar los éxitos del nipón, que tras los doce asaltos se había hecho incuestionablemente merecedor del triunfo.
Nietes está en un momento complicado en su carrera, dado que su rendimiento no va a ir a mejor y, aunque podría lograr triunfos ante rivales por debajo del nivel de la cumbre, tiene realmente muy difícil sumar victorias ante oponentes como Chocolatito González, Jesse Rodríguez, etc. Así, Nietes necesitará tomar una decisión respecto a cuáles son sus prioridades y si le sale a cuenta sumar bolsas a costa de más derrotas y castigo.
Por su parte, Ioka se sacó la espina de su derrota ante Nietes y se mantuvo como monarca con una buena actuación, extendiendo su gran racha actual, de modo que todavía quedó más claro que ha llegado el momento de que trate de pactar una unificación de coronas para intentar aprovechar al máximo un punto álgido en su rendimiento que no durará para siempre.

At New Year’s Eve in 2018, the Japanese Kazuto Ioka 29(15KO)-2 should have left the ring with his arm raised. More than three-and-a-half years later, Ioka righted the judges failure with a fairly dominating performance with which he defeated Filipino former world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes 43(23KO)-2-6 by unanimous decision. This Nietes’ first setback since 2004 had scorecards of excessive 120-108, fair 118-110 and a 117-111 somewhat generous with Nietes.
The best tactical choice for Ioka would have been to create an intense fight, but on the contrary, during the first three rounds he accepted a slow, tactical and calm duel in the center of the ring, which allowed the veteran Nietes to choose some dangerous right hands, counter left hooks and cunning jabs. The Japanese was far from giving away the rounds, since he was trying to use his jab regularly along opportune power shots, but his results in the contested opening rounds were not as positive as when he adjusted in the fourth round and began to add more pressure, regularity and aggressiveness to his actions.
Jabbing his way into close and mid-short distance, Ioka began to work with frequent short straight punches, uppercuts and lead hooks up and down with which he began to clearly outwork Nietes who, as his previous fights suggested, has lost a lot of level and punching rate. In addition, when the fight reached the sixth round, the Filipino began to show signs of fatigue, so Ioka expanded his control of the actions as the minutes passed.
Without a doubt, taking into account that he was landing with easiness precise and threatening combinations, Ioka could have sought to deal critical damage insistently aiming for a stoppage win, but he largely took no chances and worked methodically and solidly, always ready to take a step back, to clearly win the rounds without pushing Nietes’ resistance to the limit. The former titlist kept walking and finding holes for some sharp jabs and sporadic good counters but he was not close to matching the successes of the Japanese, who after the twelve rounds had unquestionably deserved the victory.
Nietes is in a difficult moment in his career, given that his performances are not going to improve and, although he could achieve wins against rivals below the level of the top, it is really very hard for him to obtain victories against opponents such as Chocolatito González, Jesse Rodríguez, etc. Thus, Nietes will need to make a decision about what his priorities are and if he wants to get purses at the cost of more losses and punishment.
For his part, Ioka closed the chapter regarding his competition against Nietes and remained as world champion with a good performance, extending his current great streak, so it became even clearer that the time has come for him to seek a unification to try to make the most of this peak in his career that won’t last forever.
