Lamont Roach disputará su segunda pelea mundialista tras vencer a Ángel Rodríguez en eliminatoria superpluma

En un resultado verdaderamente extraño, el pasado febrero los jueces le dieron la victoria en Rusia como visitante al venezolano Ángel “Humildad” Rodríguez 20(10KO)-2 en un combate que pareció perder contra Mark Urvanov. Ese fallo de los jueces le permitió a Rodríguez alcanzar una eliminatoria WBA en la que, como se podía prever, fue claramente inferior al estadounidense Lamont “The Reaper” Roach Jr. 23(9KO)-1-1, que le venció por decisión unánime y cartulinas de 117-111 y un doble 116-112 demasiado generoso con Rodríguez.
Si en su anterior combate Roach se apoyó esencialmente en un boxeo dinámico, esta vez tomó la iniciativa y presionó a Rodríguez, que recibió veloces jabs, hooks arriba y abajo y algunas derechas rectas mientras intentaba contragolpear con sus curvos o frenar el avance de su rival con agarres. No obstante, el puño más duro que impactó el venezolano en la pelea fue un ilegal golpe por debajo de la cinturilla en el cuarto round que arrojó al tapiz a un dolorido Roach.
Puede que enfadado por esa acción antirreglamentaria, en el quinto asalto Roach fue más agresivo y pareció desgastar con sus hooks a “Humildad”, que fue tambaleado por un derechazo. Con todo, los problemas de Rodríguez no fueron a más y, aunque en los siguientes asaltos siguió recibiendo manos más claras de parte de Roach, mantuvo el orden, se movió e hizo lo que pudo para sacar golpes disuasorios.
De todos modos, aunque tuvo tesón, que Rodríguez no fuese derribado o más dañado se debió a que “The Reaper” no es un gran pegador ni un boxeador que se caracterice por tener un boxeo de presión. En cualquier caso, con más actividad, precisión y habilidad a Roach no le hizo falta un knockdown o un knockout para obtener un triunfo que en las puntuaciones debería haber tenido asegurado algo más tarde de la mitad.
Cerca de tres años después de que fuese derrotado en su primer mundial ante Jamel Herring, Roach obtuvo la posición de retador obligatorio WBA del peso superpluma, que le valdrá para acceder a un segundo campeonato. En este se tendrá que medir al ganador del duelo Roger Gutiérrez vs. Héctor Luis García, objetivos que por lo visto hasta ahora no estarían por encima de sus posibilidades a pesar de que Roach no posee un nivel verdaderamente de élite.

In a truly strange result, last February the judges gave Venezuelan Ángel “Humildad” Rodríguez 20(10KO)-2 the victory in Russia in a fight he seemed to lose against Mark Urvanov. That mistake by the judges allowed Rodríguez to reach a WBA eliminator in which, as could be expected, he was clearly inferior to the American Lamont «The Reaper» Roach Jr. 23(9KO)-1-1, who defeated him by unanimous decision. The scorecards were 117-111 and a double 116-112 too generous with Rodríguez.
Although in his previous fight Roach essentially relied on a mobile boxing, this time he took the initiative and put pressure on Rodriguez, who received fast jabs, hooks up and down and some straight rights hands as he tried to counterpunch with his hooks or slow down his rival’s advance with clinches. However, the hardest shot the Venezuelan landed was a low blow that in the fourth round sent a sore Roach to the canvas.
Perhaps annoyed by this illegal action, in the fifth round Roach was more aggressive and seemed to wear down with his hooks “Humildad”, who was staggered by a right hand. All in all, Rodríguez’s problems did not go any further and, although in the following rounds he continued to receive clearer hands from Roach, he kept order, moved and did what he could through dissuasive punches.
In any case, although he had tenacity, if Rodríguez was not knocked down or hurt more it was due to the fact that “The Reaper” is not a great puncher or a natural pressure boxer. However, with more activity, precision and skill, Roach didn’t need a knockdown or a knockout to secure a win that on the scorecards he seemed to achieve a bit after the half point.
Nearly three years after he was defeated in his first world championship against Jamel Herring, Roach became WBA super featherweight mandatory challenger, something that will serve him to access to a second title fight. In this bout he will have to face the winner of the duel Roger Gutiérrez vs. Héctor Luis García, potential rivals against whom he apparently would have chances of success despite the fact that Roach does not have a truly elite level.
