WBA da ultimátum para Santa Cruz-Wood y Goulamirian-Merhy. “GGG” tendrá que medirse a Lara si sigue en el peso medio

A la vez que la WBA está siendo acechada por un par de procesos judiciales vigentes, entre ellos uno iniciado por Manuel Charr (que abordaremos brevemente en “La frase de la semana”), parece que el organismo ha decidido intentar seguir poniendo orden en sus estancadas categorías para tratar de minimizar nuevos posibles daños. Así, tres divisiones que no han tenido defensas obligatorias en años han recibido actualizaciones formales.
Una de ellas es el peso pluma, categoría en la cual Leo Santa Cruz solicitó la semana pasada un permiso especial para unificar contra el titular WBC Rey Vargas. Sin embargo, esto llega después de que el organismo le pidiese en diciembre a Santa Cruz que aclarase si pretendía seguir militando en el peso pluma, pregunta a la cual el mexicano no contestó. Además, posteriormente, en abril, se le ordenó que se midiese a su aspirante obligatorio Leigh Wood, si bien Santa Cruz no dio ni un paso para negociar debidamente su duelo ante el británico.
Así, ante el rechazo de Matchroom Boxing y el equipo de Wood a aplazar su oportunidad mundialista ante Santa Cruz para permitir un duelo entre éste y Vargas, la WBA le ha dado un día al campeón para que aclare de una vez por todas si va a cumplir con su compromiso obligatorio o no, dándose por hecho que de no hacerlo perderá su título y Wood se convertirá en monarca de pleno derecho.
Más espinoso aún es el asunto en la división del peso crucero, ya que al campeón mundial Arsen Goulamirian se le ha ordenado que se mida a Ryad Merhy. Esto supone que el aspirante obligatorio ruso Aleksei Egorov, que vio cancelada a última hora una pugna como local ante Goulamirian por un supuesto positivo en COVID del campeón, ha perdido su posición simple y llanamente por su nacionalidad, algo que podría ser denunciable por parte del equipo del púgil.
En este sentido, resulta especialmente llamativo que se le quite la oportunidad a Egorov por ser ruso pero que en cambio se permitiese que el también ruso Dmitriy Bivol se enfrentase a Canelo, si bien es verdad que la bolsa de ambos combates es totalmente diferente y con el Canelo-Bivol la WBA ingresó una buena cantidad de dólares…
Sea como sea, el organismo ha explicado que Goulamirian y Merhy tienen un día para aclarar si están disponibles para disputar el combate, mientras que Egorov sólo podrá enfrentarse al ganador si se termina el conflicto entre Rusia y Ucrania.
Finalmente, la Asociación también ha explicado que, aunque el monarca del peso medio Gennadiy Golovkin tiene un permiso para pelear en el peso supermedio contra Canelo, en caso de ganar ese enfrentamiento tendrá cinco días para informar de si quiere militar en el peso medio o en el supermedio. Tanto si gana y opta por el peso medio como si pierde, Golovkin tendrá cuatro meses para enfrentarse al retador obligatorio Erislandy Lara, que se convertirá en monarca de pleno derecho en el peso medio si el kazajo rechaza ese combate o deja vacante el cinturón.

At the same time that the WBA is being immersed in a couple of ongoing legal proceedings, including one initiated by Manuel Charr (which we will briefly address in the “Quote of the week”), it seems that the organization has decided to try to continue putting order in its stalled divisions to try to minimize further possible damage. Thus, three divisions that have not had mandatory defenses in years have received formal updates.
One of them is featherweight, weigh class in which Leo Santa Cruz requested a special permit last week to unify against WBC titleholder Rey Vargas. However, this comes after the sanctioning body asked Santa Cruz in December to clarify if he intended to continue fighting at featherweight, question to which the Mexican did not answer. In addition, later, in April, he was ordered to face his mandatory defense against Leigh Wood, although Santa Cruz did not take a step forward to properly try to negotiate his duel against the British.
Thus, taking into account the rejection of Matchroom Boxing and Wood’s team to have his world title opportunity against Santa Cruz postponed to allow a duel between the champion and Vargas, the WBA has given the champion one day to state, once and for all, if he is going to comply with this obligation. If he does not accept to do so, it is to be assumed that he will lose his title and Wood will become a full-fledged monarch.
More tricky is the situation in the cruiserweight division, as world champion Arsen Goulamirian has been ordered to face Ryad Merhy. This means that the Russian mandatory challenger Aleksei Egorov, who suffered a last minute cancellation of a fight as a local against Goulamirian due to an alleged positive COVID test by the champion, has lost his position simply because of his nationality, something that could be answered with legal actions by the boxer’s team.
In this sense, it is especially striking that Egorov has been taken away from his position because he is Russian, while his compatriot Dmitriy Bivol was allowed to face Canelo. Although it is true that the purses for both fights are totally different and with the bout Canelo-Bivol the WBA pocketed a big amount of dollars…
Be that as it may, the organization has explained that Goulamirian and Merhy have one day to clarify if they are available to face this match. For his part, Egorov will only be able to face the winner if the conflict between Russia and Ukraine ends.
Finally, the Association has also explained that, although the middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin has a permit to fight at super middleweight against Canelo, if he wins that fight he will have five days to decide if he wants to return to middleweight or to stay at super middleweight. If he wins and opts for middleweight or if he loses, Golovkin will have four months to face his mandatory challenger Erislandy Lara, who will become a full-fledged middleweight champion if the Kazakh rejects that bout or vacates the belt.
