Confirmado oficialmente el respaldo completo del Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua II: Hrgović, Callum Smith, Badou Jack, Tabiti, etc.

Como sucede casi siempre con los grandes eventos, algunos de los enfrentamientos que compondrán el respaldo del Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua II ya habían sido filtrados. No obstante, ahora Matchroom Boxing ha realizado la confirmación oficial de todos los combates que compondrán la cartelera encabezada por dicho enfrentamiento mundialista el día 20 de agosto.
En el semifondo se enfrentarán la insigne promesa croata Filip Hrgović y el plata olímpico chino Zhilei Zhang, siendo este encuentro una eliminatoria final IBF del peso pesado que decidirá a uno de los aspirantes obligatorios del ganador del Usyk-Joshua. Además será una buena oportunidad para comprobar si, como se espera, Hrgović podrá mantener su imparable avance ante su primer rival clasificado.
Esta pugna será precedida por la eliminatoria WBC del peso semipesado en la que el excampeón mundial supermedio Callum Smith se enfrentará al bronce olímpico Mathieu Bauderlique intentando convertirse en retador obligatorio del campeón unificado Artur Beterbiev.
En el respaldo también se producirá una pelea del peso pesado en la que el exretador mundial estadounidense Andrew Tabiti se medirá al exkickboxer Tyrone Spong, quien dio un positivo en control antidopaje en octubre de 2019 y por lo tanto no pudo acceder a un pactado choque ante Usyk.
Además de lo ya mencionado tendrán lugar combates con claros favoritos pero con nombres conocidos como el exmonarca mundial supermedio Badou Jack, que seguirá esperando una oportunidad de calibre peleando contra un Richard Rivera sin experiencia de calidad. También, la peso supergallo Ramla Ali se medirá a otra sencillísima rival más en su trayectoria enfrentándose a Crystal García, mientras que el prospecto semipesado Daniel Lapin disputará su sexto combate profesional ante Jozef Jurko.
En el anuncio se incluyeron declaraciones de Hrgović, Zhang y Smith, señalando el primero de ellos:
“Respeto a un boxeador como Zhile Zhang, especialmente habiendo muchos que podrían haber peleado conmigo y no lo hicieron. El respeto se mantiene fuera del ring, y sólo serán negocios, como siempre para mí, cuando entre ahí y busque hacer lo que mejor se me da hacer; deshacerme de la gente. Hay algo enorme en juego en este combate. Soy un peleador que pertenece al top de la división, y no habrá duda de ello cuando me encargue de Zhang y pase a derrotar a quien quiera que gane, Usyk o Joshua. Estoy entrando en mi mejor momento, y ahora es el momento perfecto para enfrentarme a los peleadores top de la división. Me convertiré en campeón mundial del peso pesado.”
En cuanto a Zhang, este señaló:
“Espero con ansias el 20 de agosto. Mi equipo y yo hemos estado trabajando cada hora de cada día por este combate. Hrgović va a ser el oponente más duro de mi carrera profesional. Una victoria me asegurará la posición de retador obligatorio IBF, que es por lo que este combate es tan importante para mí. Estaré en el mejor estado de forma en el que nunca he estado”.
Finalmente, Smith afirmó:
“La última vez que estuve en Yeda fui coronado el mejor peso supermedio en el mundo, así que tengo buenos recuerdos del lugar. Toda la experiencia fue genial, y los fans verdaderamente me apoyaron, así que tengo muchas ganas de volver el próximo mes. Esta vez no saldré como campeón mundial, pero esta es una pelea dura en una gran cartelera que debería poner las bases para un reto al número 1 en la división del peso semipesado”.

As is almost always the case with big events, some of the matches that will compose the card Oleksandr Usyk vs. Anthony Joshua II had already been leaked. However, now Matchroom Boxing has made the official confirmation of all the fights that will make up this bill headlined by the heavyweight championship on August 20.
In the co-feature will clash Croatian prospect Filip Hrgović and Chinese Olympic silver medalist Zhilei Zhang, this being an IBF heavyweight final eliminator that will decide one of the mandatory challengers for the winner of the fight Usyk-Joshua. It will also be a good opportunity to see if, as expected, Hrgović will be able to maintain his unstoppable advance against his first ranked rival.
This bout will be preceded by a WBC light heavyweight eliminator in which former super middleweight world champion Callum Smith will face Olympic bronze medalist Mathieu Bauderlique trying to become the mandatory challenger for unified champion Artur Beterbiev.
In the support there will also be a heavyweight fight in which American former cruiserweight world title challenger Andrew Tabiti will face former kickboxer Tyrone Spong, who was positive in a doping test in October 2019 and therefore could not access to an agreed clash against Usyk.
In addition to what has already been mentioned, on the undercard there will be fights with clear favorites but with well-known names such as the former super middleweight world champion Badou Jack, who will continue waiting for a major opportunity fighting Richard Rivera, who does not have quality experience. Also, super bantamweight Ramla Ali will face yet another very easy opponent in her career taking on Crystal Garcia, while light heavyweight prospect Daniel Lapin will have his sixth professional bout against Jozef Jurko.
Statements by Hrgović, Zhang and Smith were included in the announcement. The former stated:
“I respect a fighter like Zhilei Zhang, especially as there were plenty of others who could have fought me and didn’t. The respect stays outside the ring, and it’ll be business as usual for me when I step in there and look to do what I do best; put people away. There’s a huge amount at stake in this fight. I’m a fighter who belongs at the top of this division, and there’ll be no doubt about this when Zhang is dealt with and I go on to beat whoever it is out of Usyk or Joshua. I’m entering my prime, and now is the perfect time to be putting myself up against the top fighters in this division. I will become the heavyweight champion of the world.”
As for Zhang, he noted:
“I’m looking forward to August 20. My team and I have been grinding every hour of every day for this fight. Hrgovic is going to be the toughest opponent in my professional career. A victory will secure me the IBF mandatory challenger position, which is why this fight is so important to me. I will be in the best shape I’ve ever been in.”
Finally, Smith stated:
“The last time I was in Jeddah I was crowned the best Super-Middleweight in the world, so I have fond memories of the place,” said Smith. “The whole experience was great, and the fans really got behind me, so I’m really looking forward to returning next month. I won’t come away this time as a World Champion, but this is a tough fight on a great card and one which should set up a challenge at the number 1 in the Light-Heavyweight division.”
