El jovencísmo Xander Zayas le asestó la primera derrota antes del límite a Elías Espadas respaldando al Teófimo-Campa

A menudo los prospectos luchan y sufren para mantener su evolución al ritmo al que avanzan sus retos, pero en el caso del jovencísimo puertorriqueño Xander Zayas 14(10KO)-0 parece que de momento su desarrollo ha superado por mucho el nivel de sus oponentes actuales. Ejemplo de ello fue el triunfo obtenido en el semifondo del López-Campa ante el mexicano Elías “Latin Kid” Espadas 22(15KO)-5(1), boxeador sin derrotas antes del límite (y que ajustó las puntuaciones ante el bronce olímpico Yamaguchi Falcao) al que Zayas batió en cinco asaltos.
En el primer round Zayas ya había puesto en el tapiz a su rival cuando, al fallar Espadas un directo, conectó un cruzado zurdo. Aunque el invicto no renunció a asumir riesgos y aceptó algunos cruces de golpes con peligro no logró alcanzar la detención en ese episodio, teniendo que conformarse con seguir imponiendo su control a través de uno-dos, combinaciones de ganchos zurdos-directos diestros y hooks al torso. Espadas hizo lo que pudo para intentar ser competitivo pero, aunque según CompuBox lanzaba casi el mismo número de golpes que su contrincante, el porcentaje de acierto de Zayas era abrumadoramente superior.
Gracias a su eficacia en el golpeo, a su frescura, a su motivación y a su rapidez, Zayas pudo continuar trabajando con buenos resultados e ir incrementando su presión y amenaza hasta que en el quinto asalto sorprendió y tiró al tapiz a su contrincante con un duro cruzado diestro. Fue entonces cuando el árbitro decidió que la pugna no debía continuar.
Si se pensase en qué boxeadores de menos de 20 años en el boxeo actual tienen una solidez comparable a la de Zayas, lo cierto es que serían realmente pocos los nombres que vendrían a la mente. De hecho, hay boxeadores ranqueados en las listas de los organismos y con diez años más de experiencia que el boricua que no tienen ni la mitad de su solvencia. Evidentemente, Zayas sólo ha afrontado de momento dos combates pactados a ocho asaltos y nunca se sabe cómo podrá lidiar una promesa con las dificultades hasta que no afronta pruebas de fuego. Aun así, con sus 19 años Zayas avanza de forma muy convincente y con cada victoria parece un boxeador al que se debe prestar más atención en el peso superwélter.

Prospects often struggle to keep their evolution at the rate at which their challenges advance, but in the case of the very young Puerto Rican Xander Zayas 14(10KO)-0 it seems that for the moment his development has far exceeded the level of his current opposition. An example of this was his victory obtained in the López-Campa support against the Mexican Elías «Latin Kid» Espadas 22(15KO)-5(1), a boxer without stoppage defeats (and who lost narrowly against the Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao) whom Zayas beat in five rounds.
In the first round Zayas had already put his rival on the mat when, after Espadas missed a straight hand, he landed a left hook up. Although the undefeated took risks and accepted some dangerous exchanges, he did not manage to end the bout in that episode, having to settle for controlling the actions through one-twos, left hook-right hand combinations and hooks to the body. Espadas did what he could to try to be competitive (according to CompuBox he was throwing almost the same number of punches as his opponent) but Zayas’s accuracy was overwhelmingly superior.
Due to his effectiveness, freshness, motivation and speed, Zayas was able to continue working with good results, and increase his pressure and threat level, until in the fifth round he surprised and dropped his opponent with a hard right hook. It was then when the referee decided that the fight should not continue.
If someone thought which fighters under the age of 20 in current boxing have a solidity comparable to that of Zayas, the truth is that really few names would come up. In fact, there are boxers ranked on the lists of the organizations (and with ten years more of experience than the Puerto Rican) who do not have even half of his effectiveness. Evidently, Zayas has only had two eight-round bouts so far and it is never known how a prospect will handle difficulties until he’s put in a hard test. Still, the 19-year-old Zayas is progressing very convincingly and with each win he looks like a fighter to pay more attention to at super welterweight.
