No está claro todavía que el estadounidense Teófimo “The Takeover” López 17(13KO)-1 haya asumido debidamente que fue derrotado por el australiano George Kambosos Jr. En cualquier caso, más allá de sus problemas de actitud, la carrera de López sigue adelante y la pasada noche éste inició con buen pie su camino en el peso superligero, categoría en la que derrotó por KOT en el séptimo asalto al mexicano Pedro “Roca” Campa 34(23KO)-2(2)-1.
Pareciendo que quería contestar a las críticas recibidas por su actuación ante Kambosos, ante el que tuvo un boxeo precipitado y descontrolado y con una mala gestión del jab, López decidió ante Campa ceder la iniciativa, imponer su jab y escoger salteados, precisos y explosivos golpes de poder al ataque o a la contra con ganchos zurdos, uppercuts de esta misma mano y cruzados diestros. Con estos puños, López conectó de lejos las manos más claras y significativas de los asaltos ante un Campa que trató de presionar pero que sólo tuvo esporádicos éxitos con sus cortas series de rectos.
Y es que en defensa López combinó sus característicos errores por exceso de confianza con algunas acciones realmente efectivas y de calidad usando el philly shell. No obstante, aunque algunos directos de Campa alcanzaron de lleno a López, estos golpes no tenían ni mucho menos la potencia de los impactados por el excampeón mundial, que fue ganando los asaltos calmadamente hasta que en el séptimo round alcanzó el triunfo. Primero López derribó a Campa con una combinación cruzado diestro-jab, mientras que bastante más tarde en el round lanzó una serie de hooks sin respuesta contra su rival en las cuerdas para forzar la detención arbtiral.
En diversos momentos, como en una acción en el segundo asalto en el que López lanzó tres rapidísimos golpes con su mano zurda enlazados (jab, gancho abajo, jab), el boxeador estadounidense mostró que tiene grandes cualidades que han quedado oscurecidas por el exceso de agresividad en varios de sus combates y por una falta de realismo fuera del ring que espanta. Con todo, para lograr su objetivo de unificar una división como el peso superligero, las virtudes físicas y técnicas por sí solas no bastan, y sólo conociendo y aceptando sus defectos y limitaciones e intentando solucionarlos podrá cumplir al menos parte de sus expectativas.
Por el momento, antes de este duelo López era 5º WBC y WBO, 8º WBA y 10º IBF en el peso superligero, de modo que, habiendo capturado además dos cinturones menores, el púgil neoyorquino encarará en el top 3 su próximo combate, que en principio se producirá el 10 de diciembre, ante un adversario por confirmar, en el Madison Square Garden.

It is not yet clear if the American Teofimo “The Takeover” López 17(13KO)-1 has properly assumed that he was defeated by the Australian George Kambosos Jr. In any case, beyond his attitude problems, López’s career continues, and last night he got off to a good start at super lightweight, division in which he defeated the Mexican Pedro “Roca” Campa 34(23KO)-2(2)-1 by TKO in the seventh round.
Apparently López wanted to respond to the criticism received for his performance against Kambosos, against whom he had a hasty and uncontrolled boxing and poor use of the jab, so he decided to give up the initiative, impose his jab and choose precise and explosive power punches, attacking or countering, with left hooks, uppercuts of this same hand and right crosses. With these shots, Lopez landed by far the clearest and most significant hands of the rounds over Campa, who tried to pressure but had just sporadic success with his short series of straight punches.
In defense López combined his characteristic mistakes due to overconfidence with some really effective actions using the philly shell. However, although some of Campa’s strikes hit López cleanly, these blows did not have as much power as those landed by the former world champion, who calmly won the rounds until in the seventh he achieved victory. Lopez first dropped Campa with a right hook-jab combination, while much later in the round he launched unanswered hooks against his opponent on the ropes to force the stoppage.
At various points, such as in a second-round action in which Lopez threw three quick and linked left hands (jab, hook down, jab), the American boxer showed that he has great qualities that have been obscured by too much aggressiveness in several of his fights and for a scary lack of realism outside the ring. However, to achieve his goal of unifying a division like super lightweight, physical and technical virtues alone are not enough, and only by knowing and accepting his flaws and limitations, and trying to solve them, he will he be able to meet at least part of his expectations.
For the moment, before this duel López was 5th WBC and WBO, 8th WBA and 10th IBF at the super lightweight so, capturing also two minor belts, the New Yorker will face in the top 3 his next fight, which in principle will take place on December 10, at the Madison Square Garden, against an opponent to be confirmed.
