Dado que estamos todavía en agosto y se está hablando de que la pelea será reubicada en el calendario hacia principios de 2023, la lesión parece revestir cierta seriedad, aunque habrá que esperar más información para poder asegurarlo.
Si bien el no cumplimiento de una defensa obligatoria puede llevar a la desposesión del campeón, por lo general actualmente los organismos dan bastante margen antes de destronar a un titular, especialmente en caso de lesión. Además, Beterbiev pertenece a Top Rank, que tiene una relación idílica con la WBO, de modo que no debería tener problemas para mantener en su posesión el cinturón.
En cualquier caso, otra larga inactividad es lo que menos le conviene a Beterbiev, que se está acercando al retiro, que ha padecido varias lesiones de consideración (sobre todo en uno de sus hombros) y que perdió años de carrera por el rechazo de muchos contendientes a enfrentarse a él y por desacuerdos con la promotora canadiense que le representaba. Además, Beterbiev necesita estar en el mejor estado posible ahora que sólo le falta un cinturón mundial (el WBA de Dmitry Bivol) para lograr la corona indiscutida.

Details are not yet known, but multiple sources state that unified WBC, WBO and IBF light heavyweight world champion Artur Beterbiev has suffered an injury that will prevent him from facing WBO mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde on the scheduled date of October 29. Given that we are still in August and the bout could be rescheduled for early 2023, the injury seems to be a bit serious, although we will have to wait for more information to be sure.
While failure to comply with a mandatory defense can lead the champion to lose his belt, sanctioning bodies now generally give a fair amount of time before dethroning a titleholder, especially in the event of injury. Also, Beterbiev is member of Top Rank, company with an idyllic relationship with the WBO, so he should have no problem keeping his belt.
