Es difícil estar seguro de qué habría pasado si un Adrien Broner en las últimas de su carrera se hubiese presentado para combatir contra un Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. 28(19KO)-3(2)-1 en una situación también crítica. Pero el hecho es que el sustituto de Broner, el excampeón mundial Sergey “Samurai” Lipinets 17(13KO)-2(1)-1, no dejó margen para la duda, derribando, derrotando y enviando al retiro a Figueroa tras ocho asaltos.
Desde el arranque Figueroa avanzó sobre su rival lanzando ganchos y empujándolo hacia las cuerdas, ante lo que Lipinets no se amedrentó, contestando también con duros curvos, uno de los cuales (un gancho zurdo) estremeció a su oponente en el primer round. La guerra siguió, y en el segundo asalto “Samurai” derribó a Figueroa con un potente cruzado diestro, aunque esto tampoco detuvo al estadounidense, que siguió decidido a terminar su carrera luchando.
Por la desesperación por lograr la victoria, ambos púgiles se desordenaron repetidamente en los intercambios y en ocasiones parecía más una pelea de bar que un duelo pugilístico, pero sin duda el encuentro tenía constante acción y cruces de golpes. En ellos continuó imponiéndose Lipinets, que conectaba por mucho las manos más contundentes y numerosas, algo que siguió haciendo cuando, hacia la mitad, “Panterita” amagó con poner espacios con resultados nada positivos.
Desde bastante temprano en el choque se hizo evidente que, visto lo visto, lo mejor que se podía hacer era detener el combate, pero la pelea se alargó hasta que terminó el octavo asalto, momento en el que la esquina de Figueroa se apiadó de un boxeador al que ya no le queda nada que dar al deporte.
Más allá de la derrota, el lenguaje corporal de Figueroa resultó muy malo, siendo el de un boxeador castigado, que ha perdido físico y técnica y que de mantenerse en el pugilismo profesional sólo se expondrá a serios riesgos para su salud, especialmente por sus disminuidos reflejos, por lo que el retiro parece su única salida lógica.
En cuanto a Lipinets, teniendo en cuenta que entró al combate con cinco días de antelación, cumplió su cometido con cierto mérito, pero si no pudo terminar rápido con esta versión de Omar Figueroa, su futuro en el peso superligero no parece muy bueno pese a haber ganado este combate extrañamente etiquetado como eliminatoria por el WBC.

It is difficult to be sure what would have happened if an Adrien Broner at the end of his career had shown up to fight Omar “Panterita” Figueroa Jr. 28(19KO)-3(1)-1, who is also in a critical situation. But the fact is that Broner’s replacement, former world champion Sergey “Samurai” Lipinets 17(12KO)-2(1)-1, left no room for doubt, knocking down, beating and sending Figueroa to retirement after eight rounds.
From the start Figueroa advanced on his rival throwing hooks and pushing him towards the ropes, but Lipinets was not intimidated, so he answered with hard hooks, one of which (a left hook) rocked his opponent in the first round. The war continued, and in the second round «Samurai» dropped Figueroa with a powerful right hook, although this did not stop the American, who remained determined to finish his career fighting.
Due to the desperation to achieve victory, both boxers repeatedly had messy exchanges and, at times, it seemed more like a bar fight than a boxing duel, but without a doubt the match had constant action and exchanges of shots. In them, Lipinets continued to prevail, connecting by far the most forceful and numerous hands, something he kept doing when, towards the mid-point, «Panterita» tried to put distance with no positive results.
Since quite early in the match it became clear that the best thing to do was to stop the fight, but the bout dragged on until the end of the eighth round, at which point Figueroa’s corner took pity on a boxer who no longer has anything left to give to the sport.
Beyond the defeat, Figueroa’s body language was very bad, being that of a punished boxer, who has lost physique and technique and who, if he remains in professional boxing, will only expose his health to serious risks, especially due to his diminished reflexes, so retirement seems like his only logical next step.
As for Lipinets, taking into account that he entered the fight with five days notice, he fulfilled his mission with some merit, but if he could not finish quickly this version of Omar Figueroa, his future at super lightweight does not look very good despite winning this bout strangely labeled as an eliminator by the WBC.
