¿Quiénes son, y por qué orden tienen derecho a acceder al mundial, los aspirantes obligatorios actuales del peso pesado?

Ahora mismo los aficionados y los medios difícilmente piensan en otro combate en el peso pesado que en el duelo por la corona indiscutida entre Oleskandr Usyk y Tyson Fury, estando en segundo plano los demás choques, incluso los protagonizados por contendientes de nivel. Sin embargo, tarde o temprano, si el ganador del Usyk-Fury se mantiene en activo como monarca mundial indiscutido tendrá que encarar múltiples defensas oficiales. Pero esto genera un par de grandes preguntas, ¿quiénes son los aspirantes obligatorios y por qué orden tienen derecho a acceder al mundial?
Ciertamente, alguien podría señalar por contra que los cuatro cinturones podrían quedar vacantes en cuanto Usyk y Fury, tras posibles revanchas, zanjen su competencia. Con todo, incluso aunque los cuatro cinturones fuesen abandonados, es necesario saber quiénes deberían pelear por los cintos sin dueño.
Abordando cada tema por orden y por separado, primero es necesario explicar cómo funciona el sistema rotatorio de defensas obligatorias. Según acordaron los organismos mundiales, tras plantearlo así en un caso un juez, para facilitar las cosas a los campeones unificados se debe seguir un orden respecto a qué retador obligatorio debe acceder primero al campeonato. Este se basa en algo muy simple: el púgil que ganó su posición de aspirante oficial antes en orden cronológico es quien será el primero en retar al monarca. Dicho esto, es mejor dejar la teoría, pasar a la práctica y hablar sobre los actuales aspirantes obligatorios del peso pesado.
Después de que Usyk destronase a Joshua en septiembre de 2021, Joe Joyce accedió al número 1 WBO y posteriormente fue ratificado de forma oficial como aspirante obligatorio del peso pesado por la Organización. Por lo tanto, Joyce tiene derecho a acceder al mundial antes que Filip Hrgović, que se convirtió en aspirante obligatorio IBF la semana pasada (en el semifondo del Usyk-Joshua II) ganando una eliminatoria ante Zhilei Zhang.
Hasta aquí está todo claro, pero el problema, como siempre, viene con la WBA. Teóricamente, Daniel Dubois, actual poseedor del cinturón “regular” del peso pesado, es el aspirante obligatorio del organismo en virtud del proceso de reducción de campeones de la Asociación. No obstante, algunos señalan que el ganador de la eliminatoria WBA Hughie Fury vs. Michael Hunter tendría más derecho a acceder a la pelea titular. Asimismo, es posible argumentar que, mientras Dubois no se mida al ganador del Fury-Hunter, no habrá un aspirante obligatorio firme y verdadero. De todos modos, por los precedentes existentes, es lógico considerar que Dubois es el aspirante obligatorio del organismo, posición que adquirió al batir a Trevor Bryan el pasado junio.
En resumidas cuentas, Joe Joyce es quien tiene derecho a acceder al mundial primero. Si la WBA verdaderamente valora a su titular regular como aspirante obligatorio, como así parece, Joyce sería seguido por Dubois, mientras que Filip Hrgović tendría derecho a pelear contra el campeón mundial el último.
Respecto al WBC, quizás habrá que esperar a su convención de noviembre para conocer quién es su aspirante obligatorio. Por el momento el boxeador mejor ranqueado es Deontay Wilder, pero éste no tiene todavía oficialmente la etiqueta de retador mandatorio. Así que, en caso de unificarse todos los cinturones, el aspirante del Consejo quedaría por detrás de Hrgović en el acceso al mundial según el sistema rotatorio.
Máximos candidatos a pelear por títulos vacantes
En el caso de que los cuatro cinturones mundiales fuesen dejados vacantes por quien salga triunfante del Usyk-Fury y sus posibles revanchas, a hora de hoy (miércoles 24 de agosto), estos son los boxeadores en mejor posición para pelear por los cintos sin dueño:
Por la WBO, Joe Joyce (1º) se enfrentará a Joseph Parker (2º) el día 24 de septiembre, así que el ganador indudablemente se mantendrá en la cumbre del ranking. Además, en el WBC estos dos boxeadores también son 2º y 3º, respectivamente, mientras que en la IBF son 5º y 6º, así que quien gane el duelo seguramente quedaría en posición de elegir por qué cinto vacante quiere combatir. En caso de que seleccionase la ruta IBF, el ganador del Joyce-Parker tendría que medirse al retador obligatorio Hrgović.
Por otro lado, dado que se dice que PBC planea que el ganador del Wilder-Helenius y del Luis Ortiz vs. Andy Ruiz se midan posteriormente, es indudable que quien salga con el brazo en alto se situará también en la cúspide de las listas, especialmente en la WBC. Respecto a la WBA, Dubois y el ganador del Hughie Fury vs. Michael Hunter son los máximos candidatos a pelear por un eventual título mundial vacante.
Dicho esto, no hay que perder de vista que si Tyson Fury y Oleksandr Usyk se enfrentan en la ventana de tiempo entre diciembre y marzo, y pactan una revancha hacia verano-otoño de 2023, las clasificaciones podrían todavía variar mucho antes de que los cinturones quedasen vacantes: los boxeadores mejor clasificados podrían lesionarse o sufrir derrotas inesperadas, algún otro ranqueado podría acumular grandes méritos, algún boxeador podría ser clasificado de manera injustamente alta, etc.
Por ahora, vale la pena mencionar que, por debajo de Joyce, Parker, Dubois, Hrgović, Wilder y los demás boxeadores que ocupan la cima de las listas, destacan nombres recurrentes como Frank Sánchez, Arslanbek Makhmudov o Martin Bakole, quienes podrían escalar de forma decisiva en caso de lograr una victoria trascendental.
Who are the current mandatory heavyweight challengers, and in what order they can access to the world title bout?

Right now the fans and the media hardly think of another heavyweight bout than the fight for the undisputed crown between Oleskandr Usyk and Tyson Fury, with all other clashes, even those involving top contenders, taking a secondary position. However, sooner or later, if the winner of the duel Usyk-Fury remains active as undisputed world champion, he will have to face multiple mandatory defenses. But this raises a couple of big questions: who are the mandatory challengers and in what order do they have the right to access to the world championship.
Someone could point out that the four belts could be vacated as soon as Usyk and Fury, after possible rematches, end their contention. However, even if the four belts were vacated, it is necessary to know who should fight for the belts without owner.
Addressing each topic in order and separately, it is first necessary to explain how the rotation system of mandatory defenses works. As was agreed by the world organizations, after a judge decided it in this way in a case, to make things easier for the unified champions, an order must be followed regarding which mandatory challenger must first access the championship. This is based on something very simple: the fighter who won his mandatory challenger position first in chronological order is the one who will be the first to challenge the titlist. That said, it’s best to drop the theory, move on to the practice and talk about the current heavyweight mandatory challengers.
After Usyk dethroned Joshua in September 2021, Joe Joyce climbed to the number 1 in the WBO and was subsequently officially ratified as mandatory heavyweight challenger by the Organization. Therefore, Joyce will access to the world title bout before Filip Hrgović, who became IBF mandatory challenger last week (in the Usyk-Joshua II co-feature) by winning an eliminator against Zhilei Zhang.
So far everything is clear, but the problem, as always, comes with the WBA. Theoretically, Daniel Dubois, the current holder of the «regular» heavyweight belt, is the mandatory challenger due to the Association’s plan to reduce champions. However, some point out that the winner of the WBA eliminator Hughie Fury vs. Michael Hunter would have more right to access the title fight. Also, it’s possible to argue that as long as Dubois doesn’t battle the winner of the bout Fury-Hunter, there won’t be a true mandatory challenger. Still, taking into account existing precedents, it’s logical to consider Dubois WBA’s mandatory challenger, a position he acquired by beating Trevor Bryan last June.
In short, Joe Joyce is the boxer who has the right to access the world championship first. If the WBA truly considers its regular titleholder as a mandatory challenger, as it seems, Joyce would be followed by Dubois, while Filip Hrgović would access the fight against the world champion last.
Regarding the WBC, perhaps it will be necessary to wait for its November convention to find out who will be the mandatory challenger of this sanctioning body. For the moment, the highest ranked boxer is Deontay Wilder, but he does not have yet the official tag of mandatory challenger. So, in case all the belts are unified, the Council’s challenger would follow Hrgović in the access to the world title fight according to the rotation system.
Top candidates to fight for vacant titles
In the event that the four world belts were vacated by whoever wins the duel Usyk-Fury and their possible rematches, as of today (Wednesday, August 24), these are the boxers in best position to fight for the belts without owner:
As for the WBO, Joe Joyce (1st) will face Joseph Parker (2nd) on September 24, so the winner will undoubtedly remain at the top of the ranking. In addition, in the WBC these two boxers are also 2nd and 3rd, respectively, while in the IBF they are 5th and 6th, so whoever wins the fight would surely be in a position to choose which vacant belt he wants to fight for. Should the IBF route be selected, the winner of the clash Joyce-Parker would have to face the mandatory challenger Hrgović.

That said, we must not lose sight of the fact that if Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk battle between December and March, and they fight in a rematch in the summer-autumn of 2023, the rankings could still fluctuate a lot before the belts become vacant: top-ranked boxers could get injured or suffer unexpected defeats, some other ranked boxers could accumulate important merits, some boxer could be ranked unfairly high, etc.
For now, it is worth mentioning that, below Joyce, Parker, Dubois, Hrgović, Wilder and the other boxers who occupy the top of the lists, recurring names such as Frank Sánchez, Arslanbek Makhmudov or Martin Bakole stand out, fighters that could climb decisively in the event of achieving a big victory.
