Liam Smith se hizo con deslucida victoria con un extraño KOT ante Mwakinyo

El debut del excampeón mundial Liam “Beefy” Smith 32(9KO)-3(1)-1 con la compañía Boxxer terminó con victoria, si bien esta fue totalmente carente de brillantez y bastante extraña. Y es que en el cuarto round Hassan “Tornado” Mwakinyo 20(14KO)-3(2) cayó dos veces a la lona sin recibir puño antes de que el árbitro decretase el KOT.
Con la guardia bien cerrada y avanzando firme, el astuto Smith fue conectando su jab y escogiendo el momento para sacar hooks al cuerpo o uppercuts de mano adelantada a la vez que bloqueaba o esquivaba la mayoría de contras del veloz Mwakinyo. Viendo que el choque no seguiría un camino muy positivo para sus intereses si se dejaba encerrar, el tanzano buscó en el tercer round mantenerse más en el centro le ring y sacar uppercuts, pero tardó poco en volver a ser llevado al ensogado.
Con las cosas estando así, la interesante pelea llegó repentinamente a su conclusión en el cuarto asalto. Mwakinyo, que en el round anterior se había quejado de dolor en el tobillo derecho al tropezar con un cartel promocional, puso la rodilla en la lona de forma repentina y sin que mediase un claro golpe. Poco después de la reanudación, y tras empujar antirreglamentariamente a Smith para hacerse espacio, el visitante volvió a agacharse de forma súbita, recibiendo una combinación del británico hasta que se arrodilló en el tapiz otra vez. Entonces el árbitro, aparentemente considerando que el púgil no estaba en condiciones de continuar por la lesión en el tobillo, decretó el KOT.
Dejando de lado este combate para olvidar, el promotor de Liam Smith apunta como posibles siguientes rivales del púgil a Chris Eubank Jr. o a Janibek Alimkhanuly, que se ha convertido en campeón mundial WBO del peso medio tras ser desposeído Demetrius Andrade. Con todo, no parecen estas las mejores opciones para Smith, puesto que Eubank perdió el rumbo hace mucho tiempo, y quizás lo pierda aún más tras el duelo ante Conor Benn, y Alimkhanuly es un peligroso y evitado púgil ante el que correría un gran riesgo de sufrir una determinante derrota.

The debut of former world champion Liam “Beefy” Smith 32(9KO)-3(1)-1 with the promotional company Boxxer ended in victory, albeit one that was not brilliant at all and quite strange. In the fourth round Hassan “Tornado” Mwakinyo 20(14KO)-3(2) fell twice without receiving a punch before the referee stopped the bout.
Keeping his guard closed and moving steadily forward, the astute Smith landed his jab and picked the right moments to throw hooks to the body or lead uppercuts while blocking or dodging most of Mwakinyo’s counters. Aware that the clash would not follow a very positive path for his interests if he was cornered repeatedly, the Tanzanian sought in the third round to stay more in the center of the ring and land uppercuts, but shortly after he was taken back to the ropes.
In this situation, the interesting fight suddenly came to a conclusion in the fourth round. Mwakinyo, who in the previous round had complained of pain in his right ankle after tripping over an advertisement, suddenly put a knee on the canvas without receiving a clear shot. After the restart, and after pushing Smith illegally, the visitor suddenly crouched again, being hit by a combination from the Brit until he put his knee on the mat again. Then the referee, apparently considering that the fighter was not fit to continue due to the ankle injury, stopped the match.
Leaving aside this forgettable fight, Liam Smith’s promoter points to Chris Eubank Jr. or Janibek Alimkhanuly (who has become WBO world middleweight champion) as possible next rivals for his boxer. However, these do not seem the best options for Smith, since Eubank lost his way a long time ago, and perhaps he could lost it even more after the fight against Conor Benn, and Alimkhanuly is a dangerous and avoided fighter against whom Smith would run a great risk of suffering a decisive defeat.
