Ya es oficial. El exnúmero 1 libra por libra del boxeo Vasiliy Lomachenko 16(11KO)-2 retornará al ring por primera vez desde el pasado diciembre (cuando derrotó a Richard Commey) enfrentándose al estadounidense Jaimane Ortiz 16(8KO)-0-1 en la sala Hulu del Madison Square Garden de Nueva York, Estados Unidos, el día 29 de octubre. Este evento, que será emitido en territorio estadounidense sólo por ESPN+, contará en su respaldo principal con dos pugnas más.
En una de ellas el doble oro olímpico Robeisy Ramírez 10(6KO)-1 se medirá al excampeón mundial Jessie Magdaleno 29(18KO)-1(1) en un duelo del peso pluma que podría llevar a la cumbre de los rankings al ganador. En la otra pelea, el peso pesado y plata olímpico Richard Torrez 3(3KO)-0 disputará su cuarto combate profesional ante un adversario pendiente de confirmación.
En las declaraciones adjuntas al anuncio, Lomachenko afirmó:
“Me encanta mi deporte, y estoy muy feliz por estar de vuelta. Mi meta es ganar el título indiscutido del peso ligero, pero no me tomo a la ligera a Jamaine Ortiz. El Madison Square Garden y el Hulu Theater en el MSG han sido lugares especiales en mi carrera, y estoy deseando crear más grandes recuerdos el 29 de octubre. Quiero dedicar esta pelea a toda mi gente ucraniana. Llevo la bandera orgulloso cada vez que entro en el ring”.
Por su parte, Ortiz mostró la ambición con la que encara esta pelea y su futuro tras ella:
“Estoy emocionado por este combate. Vasiliy Lomachenko es un gran boxeador, pero estoy aquí para ganar. Una vez que gane este combate, apuntaré a una oportunidad por título mundial. Este es un sueño hecho realidad”.
En cuanto a Robeisy Ramírez, éste tuvo buenas palabras para Lomachenko y para Magdaleno:
“Es genial volver al icónico Hulu Theater en el Madison Square Garden. Estoy particularmente emocionado por hacerlo en el combate coestelar del evento que marca el retorno del gran Vasiliy Lomachenko, a quien admiro y considero uno de los grandes talentos de todos los tiempos. No es nada frecuente tener a dos dos veces medallistas de oro olímpicos en la misma cartelera y es un honor para mí. Por lo que se refiere a Magdaleno, él representa un importante reto, ya que es un excelente boxeador, un zurdo y un excampeón mundial”.
Más breves fueron las declaraciones de Magdaleno que dijo:
“Voy a sorprender al mundo del boxeo. Sé lo que una victoria significaría para mi carrera. Mi meta es convertirme en dos veces campeón mundial y Robeisy Ramírez está en mi camino. Simplemente sé que estoy listo”.

It’s official. Former pound-for-pound number 1 Vasiliy Lomachenko 16(11KO)-2 will return to the ring for the first time since December (when he defeated Richard Commey) facing American Jaimane Ortiz 16(8KO)-0-1 at the Hulu Theater at the Madison Square Garden in New York, United States, on October 29. This event, which will be broadcast in the United States only on ESPN +, will have two more fights as its main support.
In one of them, two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramírez 10(6KO)-1 will face former world champion Jessie Magdaleno 29(18KO)-1(1) in a featherweight duel that could take the winner to the top of the rankings. In the other fight, Olympic silver medalist and heavyweight Richard Torrez 3(3KO)-0 will face his fourth professional bout against an opponent pending confirmation.
In the official announcement, Lomachenko stated:
“I love my sport, and I am so glad to be back. My goal is to win the undisputed lightweight title, but I will not take Jamaine Ortiz lightly. Madison Square Garden and Hulu Theater at MSG have been special places in my career, and I look forward to making more great memories on October 29. I want to dedicate this fight to all my Ukrainian people. I wear the flag proudly every time I step in the ring.”
For his part, Ortiz showed the ambition with which he faces this fight and his future after it:
I’m excited about this fight. Vasiliy Lomachenko is a great fighter, but I’m here to win. Once I win this fight, I’m targeting a world title opportunity. This is a dream come true.»
As for Robeisy Ramírez, he had kind words for Lomachenko and Magdaleno:
“It is great to be back at the iconic Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. I am particularly excited to do so as co-main event of the evening that marks the return of the great Vasiliy Lomachenko, whom I admire and consider one of the greatest talents of all time. It’s rare to have two two-time Olympic gold medalists on the same card, and it is an honor for me. As far as Magdaleno is concerned, he represents an important challenge as he is an excellent boxer, a southpaw, and a former world champion.”
Magdaleno’s statement was briefer, since he just said:
“I am coming to shock the boxing world. I know what a victory would mean for my career. My goal is to become a two-time world champion, and Robeisy Ramirez is in my way. Just know that I am ready.”
