Aunque es un excelente púgil, en los últimos meses el peso supermosca estadounidense Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 17(11KO)-0 ha sido alabado hasta un punto ridículo, asegurando algunos incluso que es prácticamente insuperable y que podría destruir fácilmente al temible Naoya Inoue. Sin embargo, lejos de probar tales disparatadas teorías, el sábado Rodríguez simplemente recordó a todos con su actuación que en el boxeo no hay nadie imbatible, ya que a duras penas mereció la victoria ante el voluntarioso pero poco potente mexicano Israel “Jiga” González 28(11KO)-5(1)-1.
El triunfo de Rodríguez llegó por decisión unánime y corruptas tarjetas de 118-109 y 117-110, y un justo 114-113.
Las cosas comenzaron difíciles para Rodríguez, puesto que “Jiga”, experimentado y muy motivado para dar la sorpresa, mostró cómo se debe boxear contra un zurdo, anticipándose con el directo diestro aislado y sacando buenos ganchos de izquierda abajo. Rodríguez estaba visiblemente incómodo a pesar de que llegó con alguna llamativa mano, y en el tercer round González incluso se paró en la distancia corta e impactó eficaces series de ganchos al torso.
De todos modos, aunque estaba trabajando bien con sus hooks y con buenas combinaciones de directos, González fue perdiendo parte de la eficacia de los primeros rounds y empezó a verse en una pelea de desgaste con constantes intercambios en la que tenía las de perder ante la pegada de “Bam”. Aun así, mientras sus energías aguantaron, González le dio mucho trabajo a Rodríguez con sus frecuentes curvos y sus secos directos.
A partir del sexto round Rodríguez empezó a sacudir a su contrincante con hooks, mientras que en los siguientes asaltos también impuso su jab, algo que le abrió la puerta a nuevos golpes de poder ante un González que se estaba desgastando un tanto. Por ello, aunque “Bam” perdió un punto en el octavo asalto por reiteración en los golpes bajos (tras derribar a su rival con uno de ellos) y González sacó todo lo que tenía hasta el final para intentar mantener a raya a su oponente e incluso anotarse nuevos rounds, Rodríguez continuó en líneas generales impactando las manos más contundentes y precisas (y nuevos golpes ilegales) y logró la victoria por lo que pareció un margen mínimo.
Esta actuación de Rodríguez por debajo de las expectativas no significa que inevitablemente vaya a fracasar en peleas ante la cumbre del peso supermosca ni que un posible duelo ante “Chocolatito” González haya dejado de tener interés, aunque sí que es un recordatorio de que sólo tiene 22 años y que, pese a sus buenas actuaciones, sus mayores triunfos hasta la fecha han llegado ante dos boxeadores cerca del retiro (Wangek y Cuadras). En este sentido, lo cierto es que el tiempo está de su lado, ya que teniendo muchas cualidades y toda su carrera por delante, o lo que es lo mismo, mucho margen para mejorar, cuanto más tarde en enfrentarse a “Chocolatito” o Estrada más aumentarán sus opciones de victoria.

Although he is an excellent fighter, in the recent months the American super flyweight Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez 17(11KO)-0 has been praised to a ridiculous point, some even assuring that he is practically insuperable and that he could easily destroy the fearsome Naoya Inoue. However, far from proving such crazy theories, Rodríguez simply reminded everyone with his performance on Saturday that nobody in boxing is unbeatable, since he barely deserved the victory against the brave but not powerful Mexican Israel “Jiga” González. 28(11KO)-5(1)-1.

Things started off rocky for Rodriguez, as “Jiga”, experienced and highly motivated to achieve an upset, showed how to box against a southpaw punching first with isolated right hands and connecting good left hooks down. Rodriguez was visibly uncomfortable even though he landed some flashy hands, and in the third round Gonzalez landed effective combinations of hooks to the body fighting at close range.
In any case, although he was working well with his hooks and with his good combinations of straight shots, González was losing part of the effectiveness of the first rounds and found himself in a fight of attrition with constant exchanges in which he had much to lose against the puncher “Bam”. Even so, while his energies lasted, González gave Rodríguez a lot of work with his frequent hooks and his sharp straight shots.
From the sixth round, Rodríguez began to rock his opponent with hooks, while in the following rounds he also imposed his jab, something that opened the door to new power shots against González, who was wearing out a bit. For this reason, although “Bam” lost a point in the eighth round due to repeated low blows (after knocking his rival down with one of them) and González threw everything he had until the end to try to keep his opponent at bay and he even won some rounds more, Rodriguez generally connected the hardest, most accurate hands (and new illegal strikes) and seemed to win by a razor-thin margin.
Again, this subpar performance by Rodriguez does not mean that he will inevitably fail in bouts against the elite of the super flyweight division or that a possible duel with “Chocolatito” González has ceased to be interesting. However, it reminds us that he is only 22 years old and that, despite his good past performances, his greatest victories to date have come against two boxers close to retirement (Wangek and Cuadras). In this sense, it should be noted that time is on his side, since having many qualities and his entire career ahead, or what is the same, a lot of room to improve, the more time passes before facing «Chocolatito» or Estrada, the more it will increase his chances of victory.
