Joseph Cordina desposeído de su cinturón mundial IBF del peso superpluma. Rakhimov vs. Barrett por el título vacante

En menos de dos semanas tres de los cuatro cinturones mundiales del peso superpluma han quedado vacantes. Primero, el campeón unificado WBC-WBO Shakur Stevenson perdió sus coronas al no dar el peso para su enfrentamiento contra Robson Conceiçao, y ahora el británico Joseph Cordina ha sido desposeído de su título IBF.
Resumiendo la historia, Cordina se lesionó entrenando y solicitó posponer su defensa obligatoria ante Shavkat Rakhimov, al que se suponía que se debía enfrentar el día 5 de noviembre. Sin embargo, la IBF se negó a darle un permiso para que aplazase dicha puesta en juego, ya que se habían quebrantado reiteradamente las disposiciones del organismo.
En un inicio la defensa voluntaria de Kenichi Ogawa ante Cordina se pactó a pesar de que el primero se tenía que haber medido antes a Rakhimov. La IBF aceptó a regañadientes el Ogawa-Cordina, pero especificó que al ganador no se le otorgaría ni un solo permiso especial más y que debía disputar la defensa ante Rakhimov antes del 2 de septiembre. Aun así, posteriormente a Cordina se le dio una extensión de tiempo por motivos médicos que le permitió sobrepasar esa fecha y situar la pugna ante Rakhimov en noviembre. Finalmente, ante la solicitud de Matchroom Boxing de un nuevo aplazamiento por motivos médicos, la IBF se ha negado y ha desposeído al boxeador.
Según el propio Eddie Hearn ha confirmado ya, su púgil Zelfa Barrett (el siguiente ranqueado en la lista IBF) está dispuesto a enfrentarse a Rakhimov por el cinturón vacante, aunque está todavía pendiente de confirmación definitiva en que fecha se producirá el duelo. Esta noticia llega el mismo día en que el WBC ha designado a Rey Vargas y O’Shaquie Foster como coaspirantes a su vacante cinturón del peso superpluma.

In less than two weeks, three of the four world super featherweight belts have become vacant. First, unified WBC-WBO champion Shakur Stevenson lost his crowns by not making weight for his matchup against Robson Conceiçao, and now British Joseph Cordina has been stripped of his IBF title.
Long story short, Cordina suffered an injury training and requested to postpone his mandatory defense against Shavkat Rakhimov, whom he was supposed to face on November 5th. However, the IBF refused to give him permission to postpone the fight, since the provisions made by the organization had been repeatedly ignored.
Initially, Kenichi Ogawa’s voluntary defense against Cordina was agreed despite the fact that the former should have fought Rakhimov before. The IBF reluctantly accepted the bout Ogawa-Cordina, but stated that the winner would not be granted any further exception requests and that he would have to defend the title against Rakhimov before September 2. Even so, Cordina was later given a medical extension that allowed him to exceed that date and schedule the fight against Rakhimov for November. Finally, when Matchroom Boxing has requested a new postponement for medical reasons, the IBF has refused to grant it and has stripped the boxer from his belt.
As Eddie Hearn himself has already announced, his fighter Zelfa Barrett (the next ranked boxer) is willing to fight Rakhimov for the vacant belt, although it is still pending definitive confirmation on which date the duel will take place. This news comes on the same day that the WBC has named Rey Vargas and O’Shaquie Foster as challengers for it’s vacant super featherweight belt.
