La historia del combate se escribe sola de cara a la promoción: los hijos de dos icónicos boxeadores británicos que se enfrentaron en dos ocasiones y que sostuvieron una gran competencia en los años 90 recogen el relevo de sus padres para continuar ofreciendo peleas emocionantes para los aficionados. Así, y siendo ambos púgiles muy conocidos por el gran público en las Islas Británicas y que generan atención tanto por sus apellidos como por sus actitudes chulescas (que les han hecho ganarse muchas críticas), Matchroom Boxing no ha dudado en ofrecer la pelea entre Chris Eubank Jr. 32(23KO)-2 y Conor Benn 21(14KO)-0 como un PPV en Reino Unido.
No obstante, aunque ambos púgiles tienen cualidades boxísticas, ni es oro todo lo que reluce ni parece que la pelea esté siendo leída de manera correcta. De hecho, Eubank Jr. abrió como favorito con bastante margen en las apuestas a pesar de que hay elementos que parecen indicar que realmente Matchroom Boxing ha organizado el combate pretendiendo usarlo como peldaño para Benn.
De entrada, cuando se confirmó el choque muchos consideraron precipitadamente que estaba muy desnivelado, ya que un Eubank que ha llegado a militar en el peso supermedio se enfrentaba a un peso wélter con menor experiencia de calidad y todavía en desarrollo como Benn, asegurando algunos críticos que el púgil más grande aplastaría al pequeño. Dicha opinión ha sido mantenido en gran medida hasta ahora por un sector de los aficionados y expertos, quienes no se han parado a pensar una cosa: ¿por qué iba a poner en riesgo Matchroom Boxing a una estrella emergente de su escuadra como Benn en una pelea en la que lo tiene “todo en contra” y afronta “un reto épico”?
Lo cierto es que, cuanto menos, la diferencia entre ambos no es tanta como se percibe, por no decir directamente que Benn tiene muchas cosas a su favor. Primeramente, la pelea está pactada a 157 lb (71,2 kg), lo que perjudica claramente a Eubank Jr., más aún si tenemos en cuenta que también hay una cláusula de rehidratación que le impedirá a éste sobrepasar las 162 lb (73,5 kg) en un pesaje de chequeo el sábado. Esto implica que en la noche del combate podría estar en la cifra más ligera de su carrera y que Benn, totalmente rehidratado, podría llegar a pesar algo muy similar a él.
Contra esto ha protestado el propio Chris Eubank Sr., que no está nada de acuerdo con que su hijo haya aceptado perjudicarse de esa manera. En cualquier caso, incluso si Eubank Jr. no tuviese ninguna desventaja teniendo que lidiar con el peso, no hay grandes motivos para el optimismo respecto a su rendimiento pugilístico.
Dejando de lado las brechas que ha tenido siempre su boxeo (exceso de confianza, defensa permeable, malas decisiones, etc.), el hecho es que en los últimos tiempos su nivel parece haber decrecido aún más: ganó una decisión poco convincente (perdiendo un par de rounds) ante un Marcus Morrison que ha sido vapuleado con sencillez por Zach Parker y Denzel Bentley; necesitó cinco asaltos de oscilaciones para forzar el abandono de un Wanik Awdijan de nivel medio como mucho; y tuvo una actuación penosa en su victoria sobre un Liam Williams ante el que se anotó tres knockdowns en la primera mitad (Williams se caía con sólo mirarlo) pero perdió casi todos los asaltos del segundo tramo al fallar muchísimas manos y correr por el ring haciendo bufonadas.
Por contra, Benn, aunque tuvo problemas al inicio de su carrera, con el paso de los combates es cada vez más sólido, efectivo y contundente, habiendo logrado tres rápidos KOT en sus últimos cuatro combates. De ese modo, chocando su incrementada capacidad para generar daños con las desventajas en peso de un Eubank que es tácticamente un despropósito y que ha desperdiciado los mejores años de su carrera, lo cierto es que Benn no está abarcando más de lo que puede.
En el caso de que Eubank no esté para nada afectado por las cuestiones del peso (o se salte lo acordado y pague una compensación), cambie su estrategia de los últimos combates y tome el centro del ring para descargar golpes de poder usando su explosividad, podría generar una pugna dura y contendida en la que tendría opciones de victoria. Sin embargo, como vuelva a corretear por el cuadrilátero lanzando jabs con su guardia abierta y contras imprecisas mientras lleva una sonrisa chulesca en su cara, Benn perfectamente podría usar sus potentes uno-dos-hook para llegar con manos amenazantes, desgastarle y vencerle.
En resumen, pueden haber ciertas incógnitas que den interés al duelo, pero si la cuestión central es si se confía más en la inteligencia y el buen juicio de Eubank Jr. o en la astucia de los matchmakers de Matchroom Boxing para crear un trampolín para Benn, lo racional parece ser decantarse por un nuevo triunfo promocional de Eddie Hearn y de su equipo.

The promotion of the fight was extremely easy to make: the sons of two iconic British boxers who clashed twice and who had an intense rivalry in the 90s continue what their parents started offering exciting fights for the fans. Thus, and being two fighters well known in the British Isles and who generate attention both for their surnames and for their cocky attitudes (for which they have received much criticism), Matchroom Boxing has not hesitated to offer the bout between Chris Eubank Jr. 32(23KO)-2 and Conor Benn 21(14KO)-0 as a pay-per-view in the UK.
However, although both have some qualities, all that glitters is not gold, and it seems that the fight is not being analyzed correctly. In fact, Eubank Jr. opened as a wide favorite in the betting odds even though there are elements that seem to indicate that Matchroom Boxing has actually organized the fight simply to use him as a stepping stone for Benn.
To begin with, when the clash was confirmed, many hastily considered that it was an absolute mismatch, since Eubank, who has fought at super middleweight, was going to face a welterweight with less quality experience and still in development. In fact, some critics assumed that the bigger fighter was going to crush the smaller one. This opinion has been largely maintained until now by a sector of fans and experts, who have not thought about one thing: why would Matchroom Boxing put at risk an emerging star of its squad like Benn in a fight in which he has «everything against him» and faces «an epic challenge»?
The truth is that, at least, the difference between the two fighters is not as much as perceived, and Benn has many elements in his favor. First of all, the fight is agreed at 157 lb (71.2 kg), which clearly puts Eubank Jr. at a disadvantage, even more so if we take into account that there is also a rehydration clause that will prevent him from exceeding 162 lb (73. 5 kg) at a check weigh-in on Saturday. This implies that on fight night he could be at the lightest figure of his career and that Benn, fully rehydrated, could have a very similar weight to his opponent.
Chris Eubank Sr. has protested against that, since he is not happy at all with his son accepting to handicap himself in that way. In any case, even if Eubank Jr. did not have any disadvantages with the weight, there is not much reason for optimism regarding his boxing performance.
Leaving aside the flaws that his boxing has always had (overconfidence, bad defense, mistaken decisions, etc.), the fact is that in recent times his level seems to have decreased even more: he won a decision with an unconvincing performance (losing a couple of rounds) against Marcus Morrison, who has been beaten to the TKO by Zach Parker and Denzel Bentley; he needed five rounds of oscillations to force to quit Wanik Awdijan, who is at most a mid-level boxer; and he had an awful performance in his victory over Liam Williams, against whom he scored three knockdowns in the first half (Williams’ chin was non-existent) but lost almost every round of the second half by missing many hands and run over the ring clowning around.
On the other hand, Benn, although he had issues at the beginning of his career, is gradually becoming more solid, effective and forceful, having achieved three quick TKOs in his last four fights. Thus, clashing his increased ability to generate damage with the disadvantages in weight of Eubank, who is tactically nonsensical and who has wasted the best years of his career, the truth is that Benn is not biting off more than he can chew.
In the event that Eubank is not at all affected by the weight handicaps (or breaks the agreement and pays a fine), changes the strategy from his last fights and takes the center of the ring to unleash power shots using his explosiveness, he could generate a tough and contested fight in which he would have chances of victory. However, if he scampers around the ring throwing jabs with his guard open and imprecise counters while smirking, Benn could very well use his powerful one-two-hooks to land threatening hands, wear him down and beat him.
In short, there may be certain unknowns that make the matchup interesting, but if the central question is whether to rely more on the intelligence and good judgment of Eubank Jr. or on the cunning of Matchroom Boxing’s matchmakers to create a springboard for Benn, it seems rational to think that Eddie Hearn and his team will achieve a new promotional triumph.
