Devin Haney defendió su corona indiscutida del peso ligero ante peor versión aún de George Kambosos

Hay ocasiones en las que, tras una mala actuación, muchos púgiles echan toda la culpa a su entrenador y contratan a otro a pesar de que lo primero que deberían hacer es autocrítica. Sin embargo, en el caso del australiano George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr. 20(10KO)-2 si decide continuar con su carrera (días atrás afirmó que si perdía se retiraría) debería despedir a su equipo y buscarse otro.
Si verdaderamente fue decisión de su entrenador el plan que siguió en su revancha ante el campeón indiscutido del peso ligero, el estadounidense Devin “The Dream” Haney 29(15KO)-0, y su actuación no fue fruto de un cambio de opinión repentino sobre el ring, Kambosos no puede volver a confiar en alguien que ignora tanto sobre su púgil y sobre el boxeo.
Independientemente del nivel técnico-táctico de Haney y de los obstáculos que crea con su estilo, cualidades físicas y talento, no es un boxeador imbatible (nadie en la historia del boxeo lo ha sido) y hay formas en las que se le puede generar trabajo y, por el contrario, formas en las que se puede hacer todavía más fácil que establezca un dominio. Kambosos y su equipo eligieron la segunda.
Aunque todo el mundo sabe que Haney es un púgil especialmente eficaz en la distancia larga y en peleas de bajo ritmo, en las que puede utilizar su velocidad de manos, su precisión, sus reflejos y sus recursos defensivos para establecer un control de las acciones, y aunque era evidente que la única opción de Kambosos era volcarse al ataque continuamente, el australiano en gran parte ofreció la pelea que más convenía a su rival.
Es cierto que el certero uso del jab de Haney pudo sembrar dudas muy pronto en su oponente, que sus clinches repetidos en todo tipo de situaciones (tras un ataque, antes de un ataque, al fallar un golpe, cuando no estaba bien posicionado, etc.) no hacen las situaciones cómodas y que su habilidad para eludir manos de manera estática y dinámica facilitan que un contrincante se frustre. Pero Kambosos estaba dispuesto a rendirse en su empeño ofensivo antes ni siquiera de haber empezado a apoyarse en él.
Como en el primer combate, en la revancha, los únicos éxitos del australiano llegaron cuando, utilizando toda su explosividad y determinación, atacó con su directo diestro y su gancho zurdo, pero estos momentos en la pugna de desquite fueron todavía más escasos. Contrariamente, Kambosos una y otra vez se mantuvo expectante y en la distancia media-larga y larga, lo que permitió a Haney usar calmadamente el jab y esperar el momento para sacar un buen derechazo aislado. Esto se repitió a lo largo de un buen número de monótonos asaltos, en los que Kambosos dio vueltas alrededor de su rival tratando de pelear “tácticamente” con nulos resultados positivos.
De hecho, en la segunda mitad llegó un cierto momento en el que Haney, que es considerado uno de los boxeadores más defensivos de la actualidad, se decidió a tomar la iniciativa y presionó a un Kambosos que se replegó cohibido y ni siquiera intentó buscar a la desesperada un cruce de golpes intenso con una contraofensiva.
El resultado final, una victoria por decisión unánime para Haney con cartulinas de doble 118-110 y un 119-109 que fueron generosas con Kambosos, que tuvo de lejos una peor actuación que en el primer combate sin que su oponente hiciese ajustes tácticos profundos.
Todo parece apuntar ahora a que, si Vasyl Lomachenko vence a Jamaine Ortiz el 29 de octubre, el ucraniano y Haney se enfrentarán en una pelea que sería mucho más igualada e interesante que los dos choques Haney-Kambosos. Y es que contando Lomachenko con mucha variedad de recursos, un impredecible boxeo, gran uso de las diagonales y rapidez generaría un duelo totalmente diferente de lo que está acostumbrado Haney, que entonces debería mostrar hasta dónde llega su habilidad y si verdaderamente está al nivel del top 10 libra por libra.
Victorias de los favoritos
En el respaldo principal del Haney-Kambosos II todos los favoritos se impusieron. Jason “Mayhem” Moloney 25(19KO)-2(1) venció su eliminatoria final WBC del peso gallo ante Nawaphon Kaikanha 56(46KO)-2(1)-1, por lo que, al igual que Emmanuel Rodríguez, tiene asegurada una pelea por título mundial, que recibirá seguramente una vez que los títulos sean dejados vacantes por Inoue.
También venció por decisión unánime el peso supermosca Andrew Moloney 25(16KO)-2, que se impuso a un rival directo como Norbelto “Meneito” Jiménez 31(16KO)-10(4)-2 para situarse muy cerca de una oportunidad mundialista en el WBC y en la WBO.
En cuanto a la campeona mundial IBF del peso supergallo Cherneka Johnson 15(6KO)-1, ésta derrotó por decisión unánime a Susie Ramadan 29(12KO)-4 y, teniendo en cuenta cuál es la tendencia actual en el boxeo femenino, quizás empiece a tantear unificaciones.

There are times when, after a poor performance, many fighters put all the blame on their trainer and hire another one, even though the first thing they should do is self-criticism. However, in the case of the Australian George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr. 20(10KO)-2 if he decides to continue with his career (days ago he stated that in case of defeat he would retire) he should fire his team and find another.
If the plan he followed in his rematch against the undisputed lightweight champion, the American Devin «The Dream» Haney 29(15KO)-0, was truly his coach’s decision, and his performance was not the result of a sudden change of opinion in the ring, Kambosos should no longer trust someone who is so ignorant about his fighter and about boxing.
Regardless of Haney’s high technical-tactical level and the obstacles he creates with his style, physical qualities and talent, he is not an unbeatable fighter (nobody in boxing history has been unbeatable) and there are ways in which give him some work. Conversely, there are ways in which his dominance can be made much easier. Kambosos and his team chose the latter.
While everyone knows that Haney is a particularly effective boxer at long range and in slow-paced fights, in which he can use his hand speed, accuracy, reflexes and defensive resources to establish control of actions, and while it was clear that Kambosos’ only option was to go on the attack continuously, the Australian largely chose the fight that best suited his rival.
It is true that Haney’s accurate use of the jab could very quickly generate hesitation in his opponent, that his repeated clinches in all kinds of situations (after an attack, before an attack, when he missed a shot, when he was not well positioned, etc.) don’t make situations comfortable and that his ability to dodge hands static and moving makes it easy for an opponent to get frustrated. But Kambosos was ready to give up on his offensive efforts even before he started leaning on them.
As in the first match, in the rematch, the Australian’s only successes came when, using all his explosiveness and determination, he attacked with his right hand and left hook, but these moments in the revenge bout were even more rare. On the contrary, Kambosos time and time again remained expectant and in the medium-long and long distances, which allowed Haney to calmly use his jab and wait for the moment to connect a good isolated right hand. This was repeated throughout a good number of monotonous rounds, in which Kambosos circled around his rival trying to fight «tactically» but without any positive results.
In fact, there came a certain point in the second half when Haney, who is considered one of the most defensive fighters in current boxing, decided to take the initiative and put pressure on Kambosos, who stepped back and didn’t even try to find a desperate and intense exchange of punches through a counteroffensive.
The final result, a unanimous decision victory for Haney with double scorecards 118-110 and one 119-109 that were generous to Kambosos, who had by far a worse performance than in the first fight without his opponent making deep tactical adjustments.
If Vasyl Lomachenko beats Jamaine Ortiz on October 29, the Ukrainian and Haney are expected to meet in a matchup that would be much more even and interesting than the two Haney-Kambosos clashes. Lomachenko has a wide variety of resources, an unpredictable boxing, a great use of angles and notable speed, elements that would generate a totally different duel from what Haney is used to. So then the American will have the opportunity to show how good really is his ability and if he is truly at the level of the top 10 pound for pound.
Victories for the favorites
In the main support of the Haney-Kambosos II card, all the favorites prevailed. Jason “Mayhem” Moloney 25(19KO)-2(1) won his final WBC bantamweight eliminator against Nawaphon Kaikanha 56(46KO)-2(1)-1, so, like Emmanuel Rodríguez, he has guaranteed a world title fight, to which he will surely access once the titles are vacated by Inoue.
