Cuando en febrero de 2021 el mexicano Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 24(17KO)-2(1)-1 propinó una severa paliza y batió por KOT en el noveno asalto al invicto Josh Warrington, muchos dieron por hecho que la carrera del protagonista de esta gran actuación como visitante iba a verse catapultada hasta mayúsculas peleas de forma continuada, e incluso hacia el estrellato. Sin embargo, exceptuando a ciertos nombres que son tratados como ojitos derechos de la élite de la industria, las cosas no suelen ser tan fáciles para los púgiles que se ganan su posición a base de esfuerzo.
Aunque hay boxeadores que no están dispuestos a dar una revancha ni siquiera tras veredictos muy polémicos, Lara tuvo que encarar una nueva pugna en Reino Unido en septiembre de 2021 contra Warrington, uno de los mayores especialistas libra por libra en cabezazos (junto a Gary Antonio Russell) y que usó este recurso para cortar al mexicano y llevar la pelea a la conclusión sin ganador en el segundo asalto.
Tras este decepcionante final y un rodaje ante Emilio Sánchez, sobre el papel Lara recibió una buena oportunidad de nuevo en las Islas Británicas ante Leigh Wood. No obstante, Wood padeció una lesión que fue puesta en duda por muchos, que evitó la coincidencia de dos eventos destacados en Reino Unido y que llevó a que la trayectoria de “Bronco” siguiese estancada sin ser culpa suya.
Como consuelo de este último revés, Lara tendrá un combate de rodaje más encabezando un evento de Matchroom Boxing desde su país natal, en concreto desde la Plaza de Toros de Ciudad de México, México. Su oponente será el colombiano José “El General” Sanmartín 33(21KO)-5(1)-1, quien tampoco es el boxeador con mayor fortuna precisamente.
Derrotas por decisión cuestionables, una polémica descalificación (por cabezazo involuntario) ante Tomás Rojas y un knockout en el último round de una meritoria actuación ante Emanuel Navarrete son algunos de los resultados que han marcado el recorrido de Sanmartín. Aun así, después de un triunfo en México ante David Carmona el pasado año, Sanmartín accede a este combate del peso pluma en el cual, dependiendo de su actuación, podría acercarse a más combates relevantes.
De todos modos, aunque Sanmartín es un púgil bravo, fuerte y que avanza sobre sus rivales con tenacidad, Lara no es un David Carmona en horas muy bajas, sino que es un boxeador con gran capacidad ofensiva, en gran estado de forma, con ventaja en potencia y que ha probado su valía venciendo a un campeón mundial como visitante. Por lo tanto, Lara partirá como favorito en las apuestas para imponer sus agresivas ofensivas y vencer un choque que posiblemente pueda ofrecer rounds entretenidos y frecuentes intercambios en la distancia media y corta.
Respaldo del evento
En cuanto a los duelos que acompañarán al Lara-Sanmartín, sólo uno es verdaderamente destacable, siendo este el semifondo, combate del peso ligero entre Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro 19(15KO)-1-2 y el estadounidense Jeremy Cuevas 14(10KO)-1.
Aunque Fierro tuvo, como Lara, su gran momento noqueando a Alberto Machado y actualmente está ranqueado como 4º WBO, su carrera tampoco ha terminado de despegar. En su caso esto no se ha debido a la mala fortuna, sino a que el pasado marzo sólo pudo empatar de forma polémica ante un Juan Carlos Burgos que había sido elegido como mera víctima propiciatoria.
Tras las brechas tácticas y técnicas mostradas por Fierro, éste afrontará el sábado un test ante un Cuevas con buena base amateur y cierta habilidad pero que sólo una vez ha peleado más allá del sexto round, y que además entonces perdió. De todos modos, ese tropiezo fue por decisión y ante un invicto con varios buenos resultados como Steven Ortiz, por lo que, aunque le falta experiencia, podría tener resultados positivos si ejecuta un boxeo de distancia media-larga a la perfección y Fierro de nuevo se muestra incapaz de encontrar el camino para sus golpes de poder de forma consistente.
Por lo demás, dado que se apunta a que el peso wélter Reshat Mati 12(7KO)-0 no peleará finalmente contra Diego Santiago Sánchez 19(16KO)-2(1), sólo se sabe que los prometedores kazajos Bek Nurmaganbet 7(5KO)-0, peso supermedio, y Abilkhan Amankul 1(1KO)-0, peso medio, se enfrentarán respectivamente contra Luciano Chaparro 6(3KO)-5-3 y Yeasson Pacheco 6(3KO)-0, y que los prospectos del peso superpluma Alberto Mora Garcia 3(3KO)-0 y Jonathan Lopez 8(5KO)-0 se medirán a los fogueados Diego Andrade Chavez 14(1KO)-7(2)-2 y Ulises Suárez 9(6KO)-5-1.
La cartelera principal de este evento será emitida por DAZN el sábado desde las 19:00 en hora local, las 2:00 de la madrugada en España y las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT.

When in February 2021 the Mexican Mauricio «Bronco» Lara 24(17KO)-2(1)-1 dealt a severe beating and defeated Josh Warrington by TKO in the ninth round, many assumed that the career of the protagonist of this great performance fighting as a visitor was going to enter a new stage of huge fights on an constant basis, and that he could even reach stardom. However, with the exception of certain names who are treated as proteges of the industry elite, things are often not that easy for fighters who earn their position through hard work.
Although there are boxers who are not willing to give a rematch even after very controversial verdicts, Lara had to face a new fight in the United Kingdom in September 2021 against Warrington, one of the greatest pound-for-pound specialists in headbutts (along with Gary Antonio Russell) that used this “resource” to cut the Mexican and bring the fight to a draw in the second round.
After this disappointing ending and a stay-busy bout against Emilio Sánchez, on paper Lara received a good opportunity again in the British Isles against Leigh Wood. However, Wood suffered an injury that was questioned by many, which prevented the coincidence of two notable events in the United Kingdom and that led “Bronco” to continue stalling through no fault of his own.
As consolation for this, Lara will have one more stay-busy match headlining a Matchroom Boxing event from his home country, specifically from the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City, Mexico. Questionable decision losses, a controversial disqualification (due to an involuntary headbutt) against Tomás Rojas and a knockout in the last round of a meritorious performance against Emanuel Navarrete are some of the results that have marked Sanmartín’s career. Still, after a win in Mexico against David Carmona last year, Sanmartin enters this featherweight fight in which, depending on his performance, he could move closer to new relevant bouts.
In any case, although Sanmartín is a brave, strong fighter who advances on his opponents with tenacity, Lara is not like David Carmona a boxer in crisis, but rather a boxer with great offensive capacity, in great shape, with an advantage in power and who has proven his worth by beating a world champion as a visitor. Therefore, Lara will be betting favorite to impose his aggressive attacks and win a clash that could possibly offer entertaining rounds and frequent exchanges in the middle and short distance.
Undercard
As for the duels that will support the Lara-Sanmartín fight, only one is truly remarkable, this being the co-main event, a lightweight fight between Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro 19(15KO)-1-2 and the American Jeremy Cuevas 14(10KO)-1.
Although Fierro had, like Lara, a great moment in his career knocking out Alberto Machado, and he is currently ranked 4th in the WBO, his career hasn’t finished taking off either. In his case, this was not due to bad fortune, but rather to the fact that last March he was only able to draw controversially against Juan Carlos Burgos, who had been chosen as a mere stepping stone.
After the tactical and technical flaws shown by Fierro, on Saturday he will face a test against Cuevas, boxer with a good amateur base and some ability but who has only fought beyond the sixth round once, and then he lost. Anyway, that setback was by decision and against an undefeated with several good results like Steven Ortiz, so, although he lacks experience, he could have positive results if he executes perfectly a medium-long distance boxing and Fierro again is unable to find the path for his power punches on a consistent basis.
