Debido a que su oponente, el ecuatoriano José Angulo, no pasó satisfactoriamente la revisión médica, a última hora el peso superpluma estadounidense George Acosta 13(1KO)-1 se quedó sin combatir en la velada de Thompson Boxing de la pasada noche. De todos modos, esto no impidió a Acosta participar en el evento de otra manera, ya que ofreció declaraciones, explicó que va a subastar el calzón que iba a llevar esa noche para ayudar en los gastos médicos de una amiga enferma y le pidió matrimonio a su novia.

Por lo demás, el evento se vio reducido a tres combates profesionales, siendo el estelar el que disputó en el peso pluma el prospecto estadounidense Sean Brewer 4(3KO)-0 ante el mexicano Christian Rentería 9(8KO)-14(11), que fue batido en el primer round.

Brewer persiguió a su zurdo oponente por el ring buscando el momento de conectar una mano clara antes de que un intento de ataque de Rentería terminase con este último movido por una derecha a la contra. Justo después, un directo al cuerpo por parte de Brewer puso en el tapiz a su contrincante. Quedaban 40 segundos cuando Rentería se levantó, y éste mostraba signos de dolor, por lo que Brewer sólo necesitó un gancho diestro abajo en corta para volver a ponerlo en la lona. El boxeador se alzó, pero cuando el árbitro le pidió que avanzase hacia él se dobló un instante, deteniendo entonces el tercer hombre el choque.

El choque coestelar también terminó antes del límite, y en él el estadounidense Leonardo “Bazooka” Sánchez 2(1KO)-0 derrotó al debutante mexicano Francisco Duque 0(0KO)-1(1) en el tercer round de un choque del peso ligero entre zurdos.

Pese a los bravos esfuerzos de Duque por contestar, los directos de izquierda y los ganchos diestros de Sánchez fueron los puños más contundentes, permitiéndole estos mantener en las cuerdas a su rival hasta que, todavía en el primer round, lo derribó con repetidos zurdazos parte de una combinación. El final del asalto justo entonces le dio algo de tiempo a Duque, que en el segundo round siguió esforzándose por contestar a la desesperada, pero éste continuó siendo castigado por duras combinaciones de hooks.

Así, finalmente en el tercer round todo terminó: una nueva serie de directos-hooks contra las cuerdas le hizo tocar el tapiz una vez y, tras la reanudación, un gancho diestro al torso le dejó tendido y puso final al duelo.

La pelea que abrió la cartelera fue la que sostuvieron el griego Ioannis Manouilidis 3(0KO)-0 y el mexicano Mario Aguirre 3(2KO)-19(7)-1, encuentro para el cual el primero dio el peso superligero y el segundo el wélter. En cualquier caso, Manouilidis se impuso por decisión unánime (triple 40-36).

Con mejor técnica y más orden en sus acciones, Manouilidis tomó el centro del ring inicialmente y escogió sus puños en directo diestro y gancho zurdo. Desde el segundo round Aguirre intentó alejarse de las cuerdas e incluso quitarle la iniciativa a su rival, por lo que tiró alguna combinación de hooks, pero Manouilidis realizó esquivas y bloqueos que redujeron el posible peligro y contraatacó conectando tensas combinaciones de gancho y uppercut, hooks al torso y directos diestros para hacerse con la merecida victoria.

Due to the fact that his opponent, the Ecuadorian José Angulo, did not pass the medical controls satisfactorily, at the last minute the American super featherweight George Acosta 13(1KO)-1 was left without fighting in last night’s Thompson Boxing evening. In any case, this did not prevent Acosta from participating in the event in another way, since he offered some statements, explained that he is going to auction the trunks he was going to wear that night to help with the medical expenses of a sick friend, and asked his girlfriend to marry him.

For the rest, the card was reduced to three professional fights, the main event being the featherweight bout between the American prospect Sean Brewer 4(3KO)-0 and the Mexican Christian Rentería 9(8KO)-14(11), who was beaten in the first round.

Brewer chased his southpaw opponent around the ring looking for the moment to land a clean hand before an attempted attack by Renteria ended with the latter being rocked by a counter right. Right after, a straight hand to the body by Brewer put his opponent on the mat. With 40 seconds remaining in the round when Renteria got up, and with the boxer showing signs of pain, it only took Brewer a right hook down at short range to put his opponent back on the canvas. The boxer stood up again, but when the referee asked him to move towards him he bent for a moment, so the third man stopped the clash.

The co-main event also ended by stoppage. In it the American Leonardo “Bazooka” Sánchez 2(1KO)-0 defeated the Mexican debutant Francisco Duque 0(0KO)-1(1) in the third round of a lightweight clash between southpaws.

Despite Duque’s valiant efforts to answer, Sánchez’s straight lefts and right hooks were the most forceful punches, which allowed him to keep his opponent on the ropes until, still in the first round, he dropped him with repeated left hands part of a combination. The end of the round bought some time for Duque, who continued to fight back desperately in the second round, but he kept being punished by hard combinations of hooks.

Thus, finally in the third round the bout ended: a new combination of straight lefts and right hooks against the ropes made Duque touch the mat once and, after the restart, a right hook to the torso left him lying on the canvas and closed the duel.

The fight that opened the card was the one between the Greek Ioannis Manouilidis 3(0KO)-0 and the Mexican Mario Aguirre 3(2KO)-19(7)-1, a match for which the former was at the super lightweight limit and the latter at the welterweight limit. In any case, Manouilidis won by unanimous decision (triple 40-36).

With better technique and more order in his actions, initially Manouilidis took the center of the ring and chose calmly his straight right hands and left hooks. From the second round Aguirre tried to get away from the ropes and even to take the initiative, so he threw some combination of hooks, but Manouilidis used dodges and blocks that reduced the possible danger and counterattacked connecting combinations of hooks and uppercuts, body shots and straight right hands to earn the well-deserved victory.
