En el semifondo del Huni-Leutele, el invicto peso semipesado neozelandés Jerome “Panther” Pampellone 15(8KO)-0 continuó acercándose a la listas mundiales derrotando por decisión unánime al exclasificado australiano Faris Chevalier 13(7KO)-3. Con todo, la pelea fue bastante tediosa y en ella Pampellone no lució demasiado.
El zurdo y correoso Chevalier a penas lanzó golpes de poder, sino que se centró en usar su poco convencional jab y tenues curvos de mano adelantada con paso lateral en un planteamiento centrado en la movilidad, la defensa y el conservadurismo. Por su parte, Pampellone se limitó únicamente a buscar, muy pausadamente, el momento para lanzar un directo diestro. Si Chevalier hubiese dado algo de intensidad o continuidad a sus acciones ofensivas, quizás la pelea podría haber estado muy igualada, pero como sus manos eran tan débiles y estaban tan espaciadas, los nítidos derechazos de Pampellone fueron sin lugar a duda los golpes más significativos y determinantes.
Manteniéndose así la pugna round tras round, pareció mentira que Chevalier se conformase con hacer tan poco en la pugna. Más aún teniendo en cuenta que en ocasiones ofreció brillantes esquivas que le habrían abierto la puerta a buenos contragolpes si hubiese sabido aprovecharlas. Pero mantuvo su boxeo basado en la nula toma de riesgos ante un Pampellone que a largo plazo en la pugna empezó a sacar alguna combinación.
En definitiva, ninguno de los dos favoreció que el choque fuese entretenido o tuviese demasiado sentido, puesto que Pampellone llegó con rectos diestros pero por lo general no pudo, supo o quiso darles continuidad a sus éxitos y Chevalier recibió los golpes a menudo con las manos bajas y ni siquiera se decidió a cubrirse más a pesar de su planteamiento de corte defensivo.
Alguien quizás podría argumentar que el combate al menos le servirá a Pampellone como aprendizaje. Con todo, más allá de que necesita atacar con más continuidad, la pelea tampoco le dará muchas lecciones útiles, ya que es difícil que Pampellone se encuentre en su carrera a otro boxeador tan heterodoxo y con una mezcla similar de habilidad y errores.
Sea como sea, y aunque en una división en la que es campeón unificado Artur Beterbiev los posibles aspirantes tienen muy complicado dar muestras de estar a la altura del reto que el pegador ruso supone, el hecho es que Pampellone se está aproximando a un importante combate internacional que decidirá si está listo para entrar en lucha directa por alcanzar un mundial.

In the Huni-Leutele co-feature, undefeated New Zealander light heavyweight Jerome “Panther” Pampellone 15(8KO)-0 continued to move closer to the world lists by defeating Australian, former ranked boxer, Faris Chevalier 13(7KO)-3 by unanimous decision. All in all, the fight was quite tedious and Pampellone did not shine too much in it.
The southpaw Chevalier barely threw power shots, instead focusing on using his jab and check-hooks in an approach based on mobility, defense and avoiding risks. For his part, Pampellone focused only on looking, very calmly, for the moment to throw a straight right hand. If Chevalier had given some intensity or continuity to his offensive actions, perhaps the fight could have been very close, but since his hands were so infrequent and weak, Pampellone’s crisp right hands were without a doubt the most significant and determining punches.
With the fight following this same pattern round after round, it seemed unbelievable that Chevalier was content to do so little in the bout. Even more so considering that he sometimes offered brilliant dodges that would have opened the door to good counters if he had known how to take advantage of them. But he kept his boxing based on not taking risks against Pampellone, who in the long term in the fight began to throw some combinations.
In short, neither of the two contributed to make the clash entertaining or had good enough approaches, since Pampellone landed right hands but in general he he did not know how to give continuity to his successes and Chevalier often received the blows with his hands low and did not even decide to improve his guard despite his defensive strategy.
Someone could perhaps argue that the match will at least serve to give Pampellone experience. However, apart from the fact that he needs to increase his work rate, the fight will not give him many useful lessons either, since it is difficult that Pampellone will have to fight in his career another boxer so unorthodox and with a similar mixture of skill and mistakes.
Be that as it may, and although in a division in which Artur Beterbiev is the unified champion it is very hard for potential contenders to show signs of having the level to face the Russian puncher, the fact is that Pampellone is getting closer to an important international bout that will decide if he is ready to aim to a world title fight.
