Aunque necesita mejorar la gestión de sus energías y debería intentar evitar sobreconfiarse tanto, el cubano David Morrell 8(7KO)-0 está mostrando vez tras vez que es un excelente boxeador y que su futuro podría ser verdaderamente espléndido. El último en comprobarlo en primera persona fue el kazajo Aidos Yerbossynuly 16(11KO)-1(1), púgil muy bravo, rocoso y con virtudes técnicas que fue controlado y vapuleado hasta el KOT en el duodécimo episodio.
El enfrentamiento tuvo un desarrollo conforme a lo esperado, con el fuerte Yerbossynuly tratando de trabajar duro en la distancia corta y media con sus ganchos, pero recibiendo nítidos puños por parte del zurdo Morrell, que eludió ágilmente muchas de las manos de su contrincante y le castigó con izquierdazos, uppercuts y hooks. De ese modo, el cubano mostró su destreza, velocidad, alcance, astucia y gestión de los espacios, lo que en términos prácticos conllevó una hemorragia nasal y un enrojecimiento del rostro de Yerbossynuly ya en el segundo asalto.
Ante un adversario que lo intentó con más tenacidad que algunos de los anteriores, Morrell brilló incluso con más fuerza, enlazando magníficas esquivas de cintura con las manos bajas, asestando perfectas combinaciones uppercut diestro-directo zurdo, martilleando con jabs y directos y básicamente siendo muy superior en toda situación táctica. Por ello, la gran pregunta en la pugna pronto fue cuánto castigo iba a poder aguantar Yerbossynuly antes de sucumbir.
Pese a su inferioridad, el kazajo resistió los golpes y atacó con tesón, logrando impactar algunos hooks y rectos aprovechando los excesos de confianza de su adversario, que disminuyó su cadencia hacia la mitad. Pero aunque en esos instantes el favorito se centró demasiado en bloquear y pareció algo cansado, pronto Morrell se movió por el ring con soltura imponiendo sus esquivas y sus rectos hasta que en el noveno y el décimo asalto Yerbossynuly quedó en críticas dificultades tras potentes directos y hooks.
Sin embargo, el visitante resistió y su esquina se portó atrozmente al no parar la pelea, llegando ésta a un último round en el que Yerbossynuly fue derribado por un directo zurdo, perdió un punto por agarrarse y finalmente fue tumbado y llevado a la derrota con un brutal gancho diestro a la cabeza.
En estos momentos, Morrell puede ser el boxeador que mejores actuaciones está dejando en el peso supermedio mundial y realmente parece tener buenas opciones de triunfo contra la élite de la división. Y eso a pesar de que sólo tiene ocho combates profesionales y 24 años, de modo que es fácil de entender cuál es el motivo de que sus oponentes potenciales hagan turnos para evitarle.
Con todo, aunque en la cumbre no hay entusiasmo por medirse a él, la cúpula de PBC sabe que tiene en sus manos un boxeador con un enorme potencial y tarde o temprano tendrá que forzar una pugna entre Morrell y un púgil del máximo nivel para poner a prueba su proyección o directamente buscar instaurar una nueva estrella.

Although he needs to improve his energy management and should try to avoid so much overconfidence, the Cuban David Morrell 8(7KO)-0 is showing time and time again that he is an excellent boxer and that his future could be truly splendid. The last to experience it in the ring was the Kazakh Aidos Yerbossynuly 16(11KO)-1(1), a very brave, strong boxer with technical virtues who was dominated and beaten until the TKO in the twelfth round.
The matchup went according to expected, with the strong Yerbossynuly trying to work hard in the short and middle distance with his hooks, but receiving clean punches from the southpaw Morrell, who nimbly dodged many of his opponent’s hands and punished with straight punches, uppercuts and hooks. In this way, the Cuban showed his skill, speed, range, cunning and control of distance, which in practical terms led to a nosebleed and a reddening of Yerbossynuly’s face already in the second round.
Against an opponent who tried harder than some of the previous ones, Morrell shone even brighter, stringing together magnificent waist dodges with his hands low, landing perfect straight left-right uppercut combinations, hammering with jabs and left hands and basically being very superior in any tactical situation. Therefore, the big question in the fight soon became how much punishment Yerbossynuly could take before succumbing.
Despite his inferiority, the Kazakh withstood the blows and attacked with determination, managing to land some hooks and straight punches taking advantage of the overconfidence of his opponent, who decreased his work rate halfway through. But although in those moments the favorite focused too much on blocking and seemed somewhat tired, soon Morrell moved around the ring with agility imposing his dodges and his straight shots until in the ninth and tenth rounds Yerbossynuly was put in critical difficulties after powerful left hands and hooks.
However, the visitor resisted and his corner behaved atrociously by not stopping the fight, so the bout reached the last round, in which Yerbossynuly was knocked down by a straight left hand, lost a point for grabbing and finally was led to defeat after being dropped hard by a brutal right hook to the head.
Right now, Morrell may be the fighter who is having best performances in the super middleweight division and he really seems to have good chances of winning against the elite of the division. And that’s despite the fact that he has only eight professional fights and he is just 24 years old, so it’s easy to understand why his potential opponents take turns avoiding him.
All in all, although there is no enthusiasm at the top for facing him, the leaders of PBC know that they have in their hands a boxer with enormous potential and sooner or later they will have to force a fight between Morrell and a boxer of the highest level to put to test his projection or directly seek to establish a new star.
